To be annoyed at how bad our Eurovision song is?

We have any number of really talented songwriters, singers and musicians in the UK. And yet the best we could come up with is a few minutes of what I could only describe as sonic chaos with three girls yelling
what
the
hell
just
HAPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENED
over and over again.

It’s not even that it’s boring, or not fun or quirky enough. It’s actually annoying, and I find myself getting more and more irritated every time I hear it which thanks to Radio 2 playing it every hour or so is distressingly often.

How have we gone from the fab Sam Ryder to Olly Alexander cavorting in a dirty toilet and now this crap??

Just saw this BBC article.

Remember Monday's What the Hell Just Happened was written at a songwriting camp, with multiple songwriters working together at a countryside retreat to write the perfect song for this year's UK act.

More like the product of a struggle session.

Parts of the song are identical to Billy Joel’s My Life, I don’t know how they got away with that.

Yes I said that a few pages ago. And Don't Stop Me Now

ConnieHeart · 11/05/2025 08:31

Oh I love the Netta song! It's brilliantly bonkers!

RaraRachael · 10/05/2025 16:47

When I was younv I could remember all the UK entries as well as the winners. Nowadays I can only remember our entries for being awful- can't think of our last vaguely decent one.
I think the worst ever winner was Toy by Netta which consisted of much clucking and other animal noises with no discernable tune.

Was last year's winner a "terrible song sung by a novelty act"?

I think so? It was entirely unremarkable but I seem to recall some bloke in a coat made of pom-poms yodelling in a satellite dish.

Not as bad as Olly Alexander writhing in a grubby toilet, granted, but not good.

I don't know why the UK keeps sending truly awful AND boring songs, then cry when the score is abysmal that it's because Europe hates them. Sam Ryder did amazing because he was very charismatic and the song was absolutely BRILLIANT. Send another song like that one and do very well again, simples.

I can't agree with the song, Spaceman was just as crap as the rest of the UK entries.

Thanks - I knew it reminded me of another song!

It's dreadful, as is Ireland's effort.

I either like a catchy singalong one like Sweden or a big ballad but it has to be sung in their own language - oh and a key change is compulsory 😅

I’m Irish and love our entry, I voted for it in the national song contest 😂

She’s Canadian.

She may be Canadian but she also won Eurovision in 1988 for Switzerland.

mouchie · 10/05/2025 11:47

Just listened to the UK entry and yes it's a bit lame and a touch cringe, but really not too bad...it's got a slight Don't Stop Me Now (Queen) energy which is quite infectious...

Loving Kaj .. what a great song, dance & staging.

I’ve never quite got over Finland and Cha-Cha-Cha winning - that was the first time I every thought that it was fixed .. to get it to Sweden for the ABBA anniversary (and they didn’t show anyway !)

I like Kaj too, which is come consolation (Kaj are Swedish-speaking Finns) as Finland's entry this year is godawful...cringe is an understatement. Vulgar, even by Eurovision standards. You can almost smell the performance. All power to Erika Vikman for celebrating her sexuality, but a bit more class, please...😱

What, the waily rappy one? Yes it’s absolute crap.

I reckon it is. Musical merit in Eurovision turns up about once every 20 years. It’s an annual gathering of terrible songs sung by novelty acts.

I guess it’s hidden in the eight tempo changes. The flutter of recognition is over as soon as it starts because your brain has to deal with yet another aural assault passing through it at warp speed.

The band didn’t write it. It shows. Their own stuff is OK.

dabbadoos · 10/05/2025 10:47

I love it, best one since Sam Ryder!

Rummly · 10/05/2025 10:45

AlpacaMittens · 10/05/2025 10:27

That's not really how it works. You will lose your fiver.

I'm not saying Eurovision winners are artistic masterpieces - but try to name ONE awful, truly awful, song that won in the last 15 years. Try to separate "cheesy" or "not my cup of tea" from "awful".

E.g. Olly Alexander's song was cheesy - but it was also very very very bad.

Sam Ryder's song was also a bit cheesy, but an absolutely lovely song.

Edited

Dangermoo · 10/05/2025 10:42

The year we should have won was dominated by politics and war. Bit like Israel being pilloried for entering - how dare they? The whole thing's a farce anyway, when countries even not part of Europe can enter.

OMG IT's AWFUL.

I am So So sick of Scott Mills banging on about how FABULOUS and AMAZING it is on Radio 2, i will be SO glad when Eurovision is over and i can stop having to hear it.

I HATE IT.

Me too. I have to turn it off when he starts on about it.

We've had some howlers in the past but I think this one plumbs new depths, even for the UK

AlpacaMittens · 10/05/2025 10:27

Rummly · 10/05/2025 08:12

Right. General consensus seems to be that this year’s UK entry is terrible, so awful it’s difficult to listen to, an insult to music.

That would normally be a bad thing. But as this is Eurovision I think it’s got every chance. I might put a fiver on the UK now.

It’s a mishmash of a song that I can’t get my ears around, to be honest. A mix of styles, tempos, you have to concentrate on the lyrics… I can’t see it doing well with the audience vote unless the staging leans in to the humour in the song, perhaps.

Sam Ryder had a memorable song, look, and performed incredibly well. Cracked the formula.

I’m quite happy for this ESC to just pass without incident compared to all the politics and unpleasantness last year behind the scenes. Baby Lasagne was one of few highlights.

footpath · 10/05/2025 08:29

doesn't really
