Why can’t Harry just pay for his own private security?

jennylamb1 · 03/05/2025 14:36

Don’t get it. He says that he can’t ever visit the UK again because his security won’t be provided. Loads of celebrities and high profile business people pay for their own security, why should tax payers pay for his security when he isn’t a working royal anymore?

I thought it was very clear that Harry resented having to go ‘cap in hand ‘ for the security to the very grey suits type that he detests so much as he mentioned that a number of times during interview. The royal representative on the board is the person who advises ravec on the schedules and diaries of the royal family. This means in effect that Harry would never be able to slip in without his family being aware . I get it to a degree and you would wonder what would happen if he wanted to return on a private visit for something the royal machine didn’t agree with . Would it be denied in that instance.

Having said all that. As the judge said he felt ravec took a sensible approach. Surely even Harry has to agree that it’s impractical to have to have a team of 30 ish ppo on standby on the chance that Harry and his family wish to visit on the spur of the moment. I felt it was as much about status for Harry as the protection itself because it’s clearly a nonsense to say that it would be too dangerous to go to uk with his family without police protection and only private security which 99% of celebrities use and manage to avoid the killing fields in London.

suburberphobe · 03/05/2025 19:03

He just wants to have more than any of the rest; he wants to be a First Class Royal like the heir to the throne while eg Anne is only second class.

England. Still living in feudal times with class systems. Even in 2025. OMG.

I am 😱 that anyone thought Charles has been a loving father. He’s barely even been present.
I’ve nothing against the bloke and there is clearly a huge amount of generational trauma in the royal family which would’ve made loving parenting very hard but he’s nothing like what I consider to be a loving father

Harry detailed many loving moments in his own book ( in between the rubbish!)
if you are taking his words as gospel in one case then you have to take them all!

You said:
”no one can tell me what’s wrong with Harry’s security arrangements”

Presumably as some kind of flex to prove how unreasonable Harry is.

but how could anyone do so?

You're talking in circles and trying to make this personal, so I'm not sure it's worth the bother.

I've told you what Harry's security arrangements are, or at least what is known to the general public. Harry seems to think they are unreasonable, hence his failed court case. To me they seem perfectly fair, and in line with what is the policy for those who, like Harry, belong to RAVEC's 'Tier Two' category of individuals. It's hardly a 'flex', whatever that is, to say that Harry claiming otherwise is unreasonable, given that his case has been thrown out of court twice.

Do you disagree with the judges?

If this carries on I think the government will actually have to get involved as Harry cannot continue attacking the uk without any consequences.

Remove the titles and him and his DCs from the line of succession and then they won’t need security as they are no longer relevant to the U.K.

it won’t happen but goodness that is the only way to stop him. He’ll go nuclear but I don’t know what else to suggest.

Yes, I think if the UK govt are concerned about security, something will have to be done.
Harry just keeps sprouting nonsense, which is fine if it's about his todger or sausages, but he's starting to talk dangerous nonsense about the Head of State and security services. He really is a cause for concern.
I wish he'd find some sort of job or fulfilling hobby. It's really not good

suburberphobe · 03/05/2025 19:00

When the Pope visited, it was in a bullet proof vehicle. It still cost us £12 million.

That's disgusting. The Catholic Church is FULL of riches!

To this day the people at Scotland Yard say had they been looking after Princess Diana, what happened would not have happened, for a start she wouldn't have got into that car and secondly there would have been a team of security which would have kept the harassing paparazzi away.

I didn't realise that Scotland Yard ran the police and security in Paris.

I don't think it is at all unreasonable for Harry to have the same security as the rest of his royal family if he visits the UK.

And that is what he has. When he is on a Royal engagement he automatically has security protecting him; when he isn't, he doesn't, any more than Anne or Edward or any of the other children or siblings of a monarch when they are not doing something for the royal family. If there is a known credible threat against one of them, any one of them including Harry, they get the protection; when there isn't, they don't.

He just wants to have more than any of the rest; he wants to be a First Class Royal like the heir to the throne while eg Anne is only second class.

Livelovebehappy · 03/05/2025 18:58

He doesn’t like the UK. He doesn’t even like the Royal family - father and sibling, so why go through all this when the chances are he will not be coming back here to visit anyway? And I doubt that Meghan and the children will ever set foot in the UK again. Just seems a lot of drama about something that’s not going to happen anyway.

I dont think KC wants any harm to come to him. I think it’s more likely he barely gives him a thought. Just an irritant he wishes he could forget about.

I have no idea. I have no window into his psyche and wouldn't care to judge a person like that.
However. This is about security, which is determined by other people, so Harry is clearly well looked after.

So even ex prime ministers get full time secruity for life on less than two months public service? Get real, he's a target. He might be as mad as a bag of fogs but he didn't choose to be a Royal.
All this nonsense about being JHs child is codswalop, look at a portrait of Henry the eighth!
He is a blabbering fool but he didn't have good role models. His father was bullied, his mother was coerced. Tbh if I was him I'd come home, seek a suitable safe house and get out there smiling for the plebs. Better than flogging a dead horse. The USA has not worked for them. He has a lot to offer if he engaged a good set of advisers. All the Royal family needs fresh counsel.

You know the connection to Henry the 8th is quite dilute don’t you? The crowns bounced around a lot and Queen Victoria may have been a bastard? Hence the sudden haemophilia?

This thread has now demonstrated the damage Harry’s thoughtless and false words have on our country, I’m amazed that so many people have no idea about the basic workings of our government, our parliament and our monarchy.
although lack of knowledge in these areas is not a failing as it does not matter in day to day lives, it does when people are making false statements and claims about things they know nothing about.

Plus, in Spare, Harry does recount some very tender and loving episodes with his dad. Who knows, it's just so complex, but I cannot believe he'd want Harry harmed.

I can’t believe there are people out there who would think it’s acceptable for any Tom Dick or Harry (no pun intended tended) to be granted access to the UK’s security intelligence.

Charitably, I wonder if they all understand quite what they're advocating for.

AquaPeer · 03/05/2025 18:56

IcedPurple · 03/05/2025 18:53

We do have a general idea what they are, as outlined in previous court documents.

Harry's security needs are kept under continual review, and provided he cooperate, any protection deemed necessary is provided on a case by case basis. Obviously we can't know what might happen in hypothetical situations, but Harry has been to the country several times over the past few years, without incident.

What more can he reasonably ask? He doesn't even live in the country and has no official role, so the current arrangements seem very fair and I've not seen anyone provide any reasons to the contrary.

I can’t believe anyone is so petty they would deny this request for him to pay for his own security in the U.K so that he can be sure that team have access to the intelligence that would keep his family safe. Let’s not forget, the initial request was for his own security to be given access to that information and it was denied.

National Security is not for sale and rightly so, how about a Russian Oligarch wanting access to British intelligence when they are over in London for a jolly?

Quite, particularly as they've been known to fall out of windows and the Russian security services have murdered people on UK soil.

So how do you know the security arrangements are sufficient/ don’t have anything “wrong” with them?

No-one can tell you what’s wrong with them because they don’t know what they are.

The precedent thing is a red herring. Anyone could successfully argue that his situation is unique. A precedent would only be set for any other very high level member of the royal family who stepped down from Royal duties.

I can’t believe anyone is so petty they would deny this request for him to pay for his own security in the U.K so that he can be sure that team have access to the intelligence that would keep his family safe. Let’s not forget, the initial request was for his own security to be given access to that information and it was denied.

It makes no difference at all to have him pay for security. It is being stopped out of spite.

You have no idea whether a precedent would be set only for other members of the royal family who stepped down, and no basis to claim it. It is something you have pulled out of your arse.

As the assessment would be made about risk, it would be open to anyone to argue that they faced the same level of risk as Harry. It's nonsensical to claim that this could never happen, which is why it is very much not a red herring or even remotely close to one.

Also coronations have absolutely loads of notice. Months.

Absolutely. So no problem.
The thing is - it's security - it's secret! We don't know the ins and outs, but I listened to the live feed of the case and it's clear that a) Harry gets an appropriate level of security, thoroughly assessed and b) the decisions have nothing to do with the King.

No I’m not naive , I happen to understand the rules and position of the monarchy in the U.K. .
and if the queen’s request was denied how on earth do you think Charles could change their minds!
and whatever your opinion of him as a father he has never demonstrated anything but love for Harry .
conspiracy theory is annoying at best and downright dangerous at worst.

He doesn't have to give 28 days notice for exceptional circumstances. When his father became ill, he visited him on short notice.
He, Meghan and the children were in the UK for the Platinum Jubilee, and the late Queen's funeral.
Harry came on his own for the funeral of Philip, and the Coronation. So it's obviously no problem.
