To think that not speaking to your own son is not a good look for the King ?

Don’t get me wrong I think Harry has been a bit of an entitled burk but even so I was shocked that there has not been a reconciliation between Harry and Megan and the King and Queen at least to be civil to each other .
Refusing to even speak just seems like sulking to me !
That said I don’t think Harry telling the world and washing yet more dirty laundry in public is going to help matters .

Maybe some folk will think this comment belongs in the Royal Family thread rather than AIBU but it’s more about mumsnet standards ( sulking is not good ) and whether they should apply to those in high office .

Even JFK and Krushev had a hotline after the Cuban Crisis !

Surely this constant moaning to the press is exactly why he isn't talking to him? (If it's true)

This.

Any meeting between them would end up on Netflix, in a book or on a blog. Maybe the King wants privacy.

Completely agree. He is obviously a cold hearted person
What a shame the boys lost their beautiful, loving mother and not him.

Wishing death on someone? That doesn't make your points sound clear and well thought out at all.

nottheplan · 05/05/2025 04:32

Because William is probably more cold hearted than Harry, just like his father. He probably suppresses his feelings also, unlike Harry who wears his heart on his sleeve. I have two brothers like this. Chalk and cheese. And you are insinuating that Harry is a bad person because he hasn't conformed. Disgusting and bitter response. Have you ever thought about the poor little boy he was, and everything he has been through . Show a little empathy fgs 😔

Show empathy? Like you have in your words? 🙄 you are obviously another fan of " do as I say but not as I do"

Serpentstooth · 05/05/2025 10:31

If I recall correctly, the tabloids whipped up a frenzy because HMQ and Co stayed in Balmoral instead of hustling down to London to perform at the demand of Piers Morgan and his ilk. The royals were hissed and booed when they did a short inspection of the flowers at the gates of Buckingham Palace on arrival. Imo the boys were marshalled into the cortege to help ensure no public anger was displayed towards the RF. Given the opinion of the RF at the time - overall low, with many believing the RF actively complicit in Diana's misfortune - the visible presence of the boys was a 'necessary' piece of reassurance. Duty before Desire etc. Poor children.

IthasYes · 05/05/2025 10:29

@Needspaceforlego oh please!!

Harry wouldn't have the same relationship at all with Kate parents or family!
Everyone knows what an incredible influence Kate family has had for William.
Being a good dad?

Putting your children first?
Not being utterly selfish?

What do you think about Charles book?

Royal family don't have "best man" they have sponsors

You cannot fake the kind of genuine closeness harry and kate showed regularly in front of the camera

No. They are called supporters.

Blankscreen · 05/05/2025 10:04

It doesn't need to be a 'good look'. They aren't celebrities

The royals are not there on merit and they've not been voted for.

There is no way to remove them from post.

They can literally do what they want with no accountability and nobody can do anything about it.

Superhansrantowindsor · 05/05/2025 10:00

I’ve read spare and it made me realise that Meghan gets all the hate unfairly. Harry came across as spoilt, entitled and unintelligent. He has a chip in his shoulder bigger than the moon.

Ukisgaslit · 05/05/2025 09:58

Have you read Spare ?

It implies that W and H were not at all as close as the PR portrayed
Harry was ‘best man’ at W wedding for the cameras but not in reality for example

TonTonMacoute · 05/05/2025 09:55

Harry is a complete hypocrite. He hates the press but goes running to them to give interviews whenever he doesn't get his own way.

They are estranged from Meghan's father because he went to the press to dish the dirt on them, but they do the same thing to the royals.

Would you want a difficult family reconciliation meeting if you thought your relative would go bleating to the press about how horrible you were?

Ukisgaslit · 05/05/2025 09:54

@Needspaceforlego

And re the Windsor children - they may well ‘want for nothing’ in terms of material goods but they are sold to PR from the day they are born .
They have no agency and are used as PR props whether they like it or not .
They are used to build a parasocial relationship with those who follow the Windsors . As they get older the ‘spares’ are used and abused as needed to prop up the heir at all costs - never a bad story about the heir but always a story about the ‘wild’ spare or the ‘no nonsense’ spare ( ie often rude) as needed .

This was all the Windsors doing . There is no requirement for this use of the children but it was needed in order to bolster support in the mid twentieth century as populations grew wiser to the royalty game

Op I agree and to be honest I don't think Charles has been a good dad at all and he himself wrote a book about it didn't he!! People conveniently forgot or don't realise he wrote a book about his life and his mean daddy.

The marriage to Diana /camilla waiting in the wings all of it was atrocious toxic situation to bring any child into!!
The divorce sounded awful and that's before Diana's beyond tragic death.
William has also had issues with Charles but he's in a very different position to Harry and he met Kate earlier on with her ready made secure solid family which William will have benefited from
Harry has never had that and later on he had Megan and Doria.

Having said that I do understand how Charles would be very cautious about talking to Harry with this constant talking to the media but if they did speak and Charles apologised and said nice things then what's to fear.

They could get the relationship back on track and then as security ask Harry and Megan to sign ndas.

Overall I think Charles should be doing all he can to repair this utter mess that Charles camilla and Diana in the firm all created.

Don't forget Harry had two long term girlfriends before Meghan.

Harry was also very close to W&K before he met Meghan.

Define what makes a "Good Dad" those children wanted for nothing. And what you see in front of the cameras isn't always what goes on behind closed doors.
At the Queens jubilee celebrations, Louis on Charles knee, showed a much more hands on Charles than we would normally see.

Reading some of these posts , I do wonder about the comprehension skills of some people!

Ukisgaslit · 05/05/2025 09:17

@Theunamedcat
I don’t doubt that Diana was under great strain. It seems that many of the married in women end up ‘strained’ esp if they are more popular than the Windsors.

Ukisgaslit · 05/05/2025 09:14

@LBFseBrom
I have read ‘Spare’ and I agree that Harry was very kind to Charles . I thought perhaps Harry still had hope that things would be righted
He knew his security had been pulled and his location revealed but maybe he still believed if his father knew , he’d do something .

Now he knows that his father could have intervened with RAVEC to help protect Harrys young family , but he didnt .
They know Harry won’t come to the UK with his family without protection .The Windsors don’t like the competition which is how this whole issue started!

And no, before someone starts, having to apply 28 days in advance and have each application considered individually means Harry does NOT have security.
Harry is only given full security if invited by the Windsors. Let’s see how that goes.

Calling Harry’s treatment re security ‘bespoke’ is spin . It’s designed to echo luxury and special treatment. But in reality it means being singled out .

William called his mother paranoid , he added to the narrative that Charles and Camilla propagate that Diana was ‘crazy’
He's a disgrace

She was paranoid, the Bashir interview where they faked documents made it worse she destroyed the boys nanny socially and emotionally wreaked havoc through people lives rejected her security that might have kept her safe ran a public humiliation campaign against her ex husband that her own children were caught up in she behaved badly publicly

I'm not saying Charles was better just that Diana's mental health issues were very public and very real

Ukisgaslit · 05/05/2025 09:01

Tomatotater · 04/05/2025 22:32

So he was embarrassed by his mothers affairs, but he's happily forgiven the woman who made his mothers life a misery?

It's like any family, don't shit on your own doorstep. If you slag off your own family then sometimes there is no way back. Charles is not great but Harry is a very complex person I think.

He is indeed but I have not read of him slagging off his family. The system yes, the 'firm' as a whole but certainly not his father about whom he spoke very warmly indeed.

IthasYes · 05/05/2025 08:20

Prince Philip walked in procession behind his sister Cecile’s coffin at her very public funeral when he was a teenager. He was glad he did so and that is why he walked with his grandsons to help them through it.
Having invoked the wrath of the nation by remaining at Balmoral with her grieving grandsons instead of immediately parading down to London, I don’t think the Queen would have allowed them to then just be thrown unwillingly in front of the crowds. They did it for their Mum, with their father, uncle and grandfather by their sides.

Totally agree and his neices / nephews were killed too. It must have been absolutely heartbreaking. Ok it probably wasn't live TV but ...

It totally puts a different light on it. And Fair Play to Philip for going out to support the W&H because that must have brought back those memories of his sister, husband and the children.

And yes both boys needed to make their own decision and yes Harry would have regretted not walking.

Superhansrantowindsor · 05/05/2025 08:11

Regarding the funeral and Diana’s death- the Queen kept the children in Balmoral shielded from the press. The public and tabloids went crazy. I remember commenting to DH how ghoulish it was and that people wouldn’t be happy until they saw the tear stained cheeks and blood shot eyes of two boys who had lost their mum. I felt really sorry for the Queen and how she was treated. And then those idiots crying at the boys as they handed them flowers outside BP. They wanted the children to be props in their performative grief. It was the public who wanted the coffin walk.

Mylovelygreendress · 05/05/2025 07:53

Lockdownsceptic · 05/05/2025 02:49

Alot of people say this about the funeral but. I don’t think anyone forced Harry to walk behind his mother’s cortège. He is supposed to have been traumatised by doing so but imagine the guilt he would later have felt if he hadn’t done so. It’s not the walking behind the coffin that did the damage it is losing his mother.
I also think Charles has been an excellent father to those two boys in difficult circumstances.
We should remember that both boys lost their mother, both walked behind her coffin but only one of them turned out like Harry.

Can you imagine the temper tantrums now if Harry had not been allowed to walk behind his mother but William was ?

Roselilly36 · 05/05/2025 06:24

It’s a family, and family disputes are very common, when trust is broken down it very hard to come back from. Personally I don’t blame the King for distancing himself.
