To think MNHQ should delete all chat about ‘the golden/bonus dose’ for those on WLI?

I use the weight loss forums quite a lot and with the arrival of WLI they are busier than ever. But, it’s worrying the amount of people who are misusing their prescription and discussing with others how to do so. Should MNHQ take action here?

The vast majority of people using them are abusing them in the first place, hence not getting it through a GP and having medical supervision. I'm buggered if I'd risk my health for a lazy fix.

this 👆is just total uniformed shite and prejudice

is this the wider audience here and less likely to have bias you were looking for OP

Err, nope! It's not abusing them to get them via an online pharmacy. It's just a private prescription from a regulated pharmacy. No one is able to get it via the GP for weight loss because the NHS has chosen not to roll it out yet, and will only roll it out to people with very high BMIs and several weight related health conditions initially.

No one is asking you to risk your health for a "lazy fix". I was quite happy to, because over the last 42 weeks I have lost several stone and am now almost out of the obese category for the first time in about 25 years. My health is massively improved as a result.

KnewYearKnewMe · 01/05/2025 17:41

I do it every time. I’ve lost 4 stone since October and am nearly at a stage where I will go onto a maintenance dose for the long term.

the ‘golden dose’ is just extra, exactly the same, in-date medication. The ‘delivery vehicle’ - ie, the pen, is limited to 4 dispenses because of the way it’s made.

That doesn’t mean the remaining medication is any less safe or effective if dispensed via an insulin needle.

TourangaLeila · 01/05/2025 17:38

Are you this risk-averse in other everyday situations?

There's nowt wrong with the needles on amazon.

I honestly don't understand your concern. It seems to be based on the principle of the situation that it's "only designed to give 4 doses". Which is is true, but does not automatically make manually taking the 5th availabe dose dangerous in any way.

I guess I am a bit, yes. But I get it IABU

People are grown ups who should be able to discuss things like this with other grown ups.

without policing from people who think they know better and want to enforce their opinions on others.

GPS are not prescribing them for weight loss here though so we have to use a pharmacy, there is more supervision over my prescription for MJ than my GP gives DH for his much more risky meds.

you might think it’s an easy fix, but for me it was the only fix after years of trying and a shot load of ill health which has now been resolved

I’m going to suggest those patients are shown how to do it safely and given the appropriate equipment rather then buying needles on Amazon etc though. I think there is a huge difference

MadKittenWoman · 01/05/2025 17:38

I have no need for WLI but it sounds sensible to me to get the remainder out!

Oreosareawful · 01/05/2025 17:37

I’ve either broken the pen or sucked out the last dose of every single pen I’ve bought. I’m an adult and can make my own decisions, just like choosing to go on the medication in the first place. It’s ridiculously expensive and I wasn’t prepared to throw away a fifth of the pen each time!

I'm almost five stone down and it was the best thing I ever did.

SilenceInside · 01/05/2025 17:37

@SpidersAreShitheads it's really up to the pharmacies regulatory body (GPhC) to crack down on pharmacies using referral code systems and influencers that are against the law for selling prescription only medication. It is not something that MNHQ can control or should try to control. It needs to be controlled by the pharmacies understanding that they will fail their inspections and be subject to sanctions if they behave in a way that breaks the law.

MedExpress who are the worst for this have already changed their rules on referral codes, which has led to a huge reduction in the number of posts pushing them.

istrich · 01/05/2025 17:37

GustyBaloo · 01/05/2025 17:35

I think tighter regulations have already been seen. Photographs, official ID, notifying GP.

So are you taking one of these meds and worried that you'll not be able to continue due to the golden dose issue?

As for people wiping themselves and not the red opening on pen... Some people will never read the instructions. They probably have IKEA cabinets on the wonk and creaky.
I don't think that they'll bring down a multi million pound pharmaceutical industry though.

Ikeas still going. I bet there were many more injuries gained putting a bed together than there have been self injecting.

If jakeys can manage it in to a vein, it can't be that difficult in to a bit of belly flab.

This is a totally different perspective that really helps - thank you. I realised IWBU but this post has made me understand why/how and it make so much more sense with the IKEA/junky examples

Hopefully the codes will soon be a thing of the past. I agree that it is entirely unethical to make serious prescription medication an MLM scheme.

Am also always upfront with people about the very minor side effects I've had, but the best part of 5 stone down I also say it's been life changing for me.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 01/05/2025 17:32

You can always hide the WLI board.

It's none of your business to police what the majority of people who use MJ do perfectly safely.

I know, I was asking if IWBU, which I was.

m not going to hide the boards like I alsrwady said I am using them often

None. Well none yet anyway. There is a bigger picture though and the future of these medications is vastly unknown. The misuse of the pens could lead to tighter prescription regulations and higher cost which will ultimately affect me at some point. So yes I do have an interest but also it’s worrying to see ill informed people messing about injecting themselves
.
as an aside becsue it’s obviously not on mumsnet but the amount not videos of people taking their WLI and they wipe themselves and not the pen is shocking.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 01/05/2025 17:34

The only reason pharmacies advise against it is bc it means less money for them, let's be honest.

Absolutely this.

SpidersAreShitheads · 01/05/2025 17:33

I'm not really sure how the extra dose thing works, but on the face of it, I can't see much of a problem.

But I do think there is a HUGE problem about how the WLI are discussed, and the lack of transparency around posts and opinions.

"Oh, the WLI are TOTALLY fine, I've not had any side effects at all and they have completely changed my life - by the way, do you want my discount code hun?"

I'm not opposed to the WLI, but I am opposed to the (lack of) proper checks from some prescribers. I think it's deeply unethical to be incentivising users to get other users to sign up - I can't think of any other powerful medical treatments that do the same. And we know from the many stories that many prescribers aren't checking medical background robustly, and many have the most basic "checks" in place.

I don't think it's possible, but I really wish MN wouldn't allow people to share codes etc on here. I think it encourages a lack of honesty from some, and I think this is a subject that would really benefit from truthful conversations.

Crikeyalmighty · 01/05/2025 17:33

Ah yes you are correct - I’m not doing it myself as I’m not sure if I will continue but yep I do see why others are

AugustMounjaroTeam · 01/05/2025 17:33

Azureshores · 01/05/2025 17:24

I can easily afford the pens too but to effectively chuck away £50 worth of medication is bonkers. It's easy as pie to do it with an insulin syringe - actually easier than faffing with the screw on needle.

Absolutely. I can easily afford the medication too, because I'm not daft enough to throw money in the bin.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 01/05/2025 17:33

SilenceInside · 01/05/2025 17:25

@youcannaecallherfanny thanks, I will do. To be clear, I always prime the needles properly to remove air bubbles when using the pen. I still have plenty of medication left over, as I am usually fortunate not to have duff needles. You also don't need to break the pen to extract the medication using a syringe, and at that point the pen has already been used for the 4 normal doses, so you'd be about to throw it away anyway. No need to worry about breaking it.

I can also easily afford the pens, and ordering syringes was extremely straightforward too. I just don't see the point in throwing away enough medication to do an additional dose, and the money saving is a bonus.
