To think MNHQ should delete all chat about ‘the golden/bonus dose’ for those on WLI?

I use the weight loss forums quite a lot and with the arrival of WLI they are busier than ever. But, it’s worrying the amount of people who are misusing their prescription and discussing with others how to do so. Should MNHQ take action here?

It sounds like you are visualising someone using a medical style needle and syringe to suck the medication out of the WLI pen and then inject themselves. But they aren't doing that.

The pen and the needle are separate elements. The pen contains the medication and depending on the supplier, will come with 4 needles. You can buy extra needles - readily available, without a syringe or pen.

The pens are the exact same as pens diabetics use for insulin (and most other patient administered injectables) and the needles are not pen specific. Most diabetics keep a large stock of needles in case one is bent or the thread is slightly off so it doesn't screw on the top of the pen correctly. It's sensible to have an excess stock of needles for the same reason. The needles are colloquially known as "diabetic needles" (as opposed to hypodermic) and if you search that term you get the correct ones.

They are. I use a needle and syringe to draw out the medication from the medication from the pen as its more accurate than trying force the pen to administer the last dose. The pen stops turning after the 4th dose has been administered, you can force it, but the clicks are different once forced, i feel its safer to ensure the correct dose is given by drawing it off into a syringe. but everyone taking it is an adult and can make their own judgement call.

You're wrong. Most people are doing exactly that.
I've been doing it since my first pen, many months ago.

because they capped the pen off, probably to make more money. Their own information states that the medication is safe for 30 days once opened. So assuming you inject every 7 days as advised

jab1 - day 0
jab 2 - day 7
jab 3 - day 14
jab 4 - day 21
jab 5 - day 28

The fact the last dose needs to be drawn off with a clean sterile, also safe as they are used millions to draw up insulin from a vial not a pen, which has the same rubber bung on top as what is used in the pen, insulin syringe, doesnt make the medication any less safe.

Edited

You can break the cap off and just use the pen to get the extra out, no drawing it off. I'm on Wegovy and the husband is on mj and we both do this.

But why is everyone saying you cannot take it form the own and you need to use an insulin needle?

Because the quantity of MJ left in the pen is 0.8ml, which is more than one dose. One dose is 0.6ml.

So it's important to use a syringe and needle to extract the correct quantity of medication accurately.

@istrich I don't know what the previous poster is referring to regarding Ozempic/Wegovy, but with the Mounjaro pens, once you have done the four normal doses you can try to do a "hard" twist of the mechanism. The mechanism is locked, but if you turn the pen hard enough you can break the locking mechanism and then the pen will turn out to the 1 position as normal, and you can inject.

But, it's hard to do, and sometimes the pen mechanism just completely breaks and you can't inject with it any more. So people use 1ml syringes instead to extract the remaining liquid, and not have to worry about trying to force the pen mechanism or the mechanism breaking.

istrich · 01/05/2025 17:59

Youbutterbelieve · 01/05/2025 17:57

Yes you can! Very very easily. When wegovy was ozempic you could get a prescription for however many doses the pen contained.

The last dose in a pen is absolutely safe to take!

I’ve been using the bonus dose for a year, no issues at all.

i thought it was there for the priming stage. There no problem at all with using it.

What issues are you suggesting there could be?

i am not. I accepted ages ago that IABU

@SpidersAreShitheads I don’t think I’ve ever seen a post removed by MN because it contained dodgy medical advice. I’ve seen lots of posts on all sorts of topics left standing. Sporner’s Corner is rife with them!

I will say, from being on the WLI boards for a long time now and posting a lot, that there are some regular posters who pop up on these kinds of threads and post the sort of comments that you describe. It isn’t lots of people, and they usually get robustly challenged.

Whilst using the medication to squeeze an extra dose seems prudent to me, what does concern me is that people or knocking inches off their height to get prescription ms and bragging about still taking it now being a size 6. I personally don’t think these drugs should be issued without an in person consultation with a proper doctor then an person check up periodically to ensure weight is still high enough to be appropriate to take these powerful drugs

my provider sends a letter each month to my GP, showing height, weight, BMI and dosage prescribed. As far as I can tell from the weight loss pages, other providers do the same.

my NHS app ‘documents’ page has never been so busy!

SpidersAreShitheads · 01/05/2025 17:50

SilenceInside · 01/05/2025 17:37

@SpidersAreShitheads it's really up to the pharmacies regulatory body (GPhC) to crack down on pharmacies using referral code systems and influencers that are against the law for selling prescription only medication. It is not something that MNHQ can control or should try to control. It needs to be controlled by the pharmacies understanding that they will fail their inspections and be subject to sanctions if they behave in a way that breaks the law.

MedExpress who are the worst for this have already changed their rules on referral codes, which has led to a huge reduction in the number of posts pushing them.

Yes, absolutely. I have heard anecdotally that there's been a crackdown which can only be a good thing. No one wants to stop people from getting WLI that they genuinely qualify for but these are powerful drugs and really do need to be prescribed within the limits they've been approved for.

I saw a post yesterday with someone recommending knocking inches off your height to get the weight to the right BMI to qualify.

There was someone else who was already tiny - I think their BMI was 18 - complaining that they couldn't qualify. Posts with suggestions on how to cheat the system are downright dangerous for anyone reading with these kind of body issues.

Also, I would say that MN do crack down on other posts where inappropriate medical advice is being given, so I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility to stop unsafe/unethical advice being given on WLI too.

The vast majority of people using them are abusing them in the first place, hence not getting it through a GP and having medical supervision. I'm buggered if I'd risk my health for a lazy fix.

The vast majority of people are abusing WLI's? Really?? How do you know this?

I havent read the thread. But, the pen design is also used for insulin, insulin is a personalised dose for the patient, from a handful of units, or clicks, up to 80+ at times. In teh inulin pens, there is no amount at the end considered unsafe to use. Everything in the pen is useable for the same 30 day once first used. I firmly believe, as a nurse, the 4 doses only is for ease of ordering and use. Maybe profits too. That medication is just as useable as the first dose, so long as it is used within 30 days as the manufacturer states.

I personally have drawn it off with an insulin syringe to the 60 units, or 0.6ml every pen for 9 months. Its safe, its in date, its carefully measured out. Its fine.

37.5kg/6 stone down, ill continue to use it.

Hopefully the codes will soon be a thing of the past. I agree that it is entirely unethical to make serious prescription medication an MLM scheme.

Am also always upfront with people about the very minor side effects I've had, but the best part of 5 stone down I also say it's been life changing for me.

I really appreciate these types of honest posts and 5 stone is amazing! You must feel great!

I lost three stone towards the tail end of last year but I have another 7 stone to lose and I'm just stuck. Perimenopausal, I suspect hormones are a major factor. Nothing is shifting and I'm just scowling at the scales every week 😂

I keep side-eying the WLI 😂 I don't think I'll take the plunge as my whole digestion system is weird - and I had acute pancreatitis in the past. I'm also one of those people who always develops the rare side-effects. I got a blood clot from one of the COVID jabs, for example, and ended up in hospital.

I do genuinely love seeing success stories though and it's great that WLI are helping so many people.
