To think MNHQ should delete all chat about ‘the golden/bonus dose’ for those on WLI?

I use the weight loss forums quite a lot and with the arrival of WLI they are busier than ever. But, it’s worrying the amount of people who are misusing their prescription and discussing with others how to do so. Should MNHQ take action here?

I’m so tempted to ask how you do it given the pens don’t allow for that but it would be a massive contradiction!

I’d like to know too!

OldTiredMum1976 · 01/05/2025 18:40

Maybe if the incompetent NHS didn’t make you jump through a million hoops to get the medication such as being sat in a circle with other fat people and being told to have 2 weetabix and a smoothie for breakfast, only to then be told that it’s not available, then maybe people could get it on the NHS and then wouldn’t need to take the extra dose (as the NHS likes to squander everyone’s money). However, if I’m paying bet £150 a month for it then I’m getting every last drop!

You’ll especially love that I’m on a lower dose but order the higher dose as it’s the same price and just inject less 😱😱 shock horror!

GrouchyBear · 01/05/2025 16:25

Yes, you can. I have done on the odd occasion that I've needed to. It's just extremely difficult to twist the pen after the 4th dose. It's there for emergencies.

Can you? I didn’t realise that. I had to throw it away which is very expensive at over £30 a dose

Can I ask what prompted the post though?

In all honesty, you're not wrong in that prescription drugs are being openly abused and the means to do so are posted freely.
I openly abuse Mounjaro to get an extra dose.
Sometimes I abuse my other prescribed drugs to get some extra sleep! But I'm not condoning that, or naming the drugs or what I take because that would be frowned upon.

So, you aren't being unreasonable. You don't have to accept that you are.

I'm interested in your reasons though for not wanting it discussed.

Because I'm nosey like that!

I don't think it will be too long until 'golden dose' posts are banned. They are after all giving information about abusing a prescribed medication. I've got my syringes and badly built IKEA flat pack rubbish and I shall abuse.

I get prescribed 240mg codeine daily. I don't take it daily. If I took full dose I'd be in la la land feeling dizzy and shit. I don't like the stuff.
However if I did and started explaining to people that it's much better to snort it (for example!) I'd soon be banned.

So, OP isn't wrong. Those of us doing it have made our choices and don't see it as wrong.

It's a very fine line I think that's being drawn.

Well my GP says it's safe. I'm more likely to believe him than a random stranger on mumsnet 😬

Thisshirtisonfire · 01/05/2025 18:37

Of course they shouldn't. Mumsnet has always allowed free speech. There's always both sides of the argument available. We are all adults and are able to sort through information and assess risks for ourselves.
And actually allowing discussion makes the risks clearer.

I have used a pen longer than 30 days as I ordered a 5ml but only wanted 2.5. Instead of chucking the whole pen I just halved the dose and then I did a couple extra off the end because of course there was loads left after 4 weeks. I read up on it and decided to take the risk to go a couple of weeks past 30 days otherwise idve been chucking away loads of very expensive medication that I am paying for.
I didn't extract anything though. I did not need to break the pen.
But I sympathise with people who consider doing golden doses. I'd never do it myself because I'm just not confident enough loading the syringe in that manner. But anyone with diabetes probably would know how to do it anyway so I understand why they do that, they don't want to waste money and are confident they can do it safely.

You cannot take the ‘extra’ dose from the pen

Yes you can. I’ve drawn it up with diabetic syringes which I bought from the chemists.

Sorry I was led to believe the one would not physically give the extra amount as lots of people say you need the insulin needle to extract.

This is the issue. Like others, you are also being led ny misinformation. I completely understand your perspective and how you have got this (incorrect) information, but you are wrong in this instance. I've actually run this via my GP (when I went in for a chat about possible side effects) and he thought it was a 'no-brainer' and 'completely safe'. I haven't touched an insulin needle. If I wanted to, I'd run that by my GP too and if he said it was fine, I wouldn't have a problem with that either. There are MANY people spreading misinformation on mumset about WLIs... but you are doing that as well with your posts.

I get extra needle heads from pharmacist. 5 for a 4 click pen.

Once the pen has done it's full 4 clicks of 0.6 it will lock though, so no extra dose without withdrawing with a separate syringe.

I've never heard of a separate syringe being sent out with pens.

I agree with you thay there's lots of dangerous information being spread and practised, but this is not an example of that.

It wasn’t a question for MN so that’s why didn’t put it on site stuff it was a general discussion if that would be reasonable, Turns out it’s not so no need to bring it to site stuff.

It sounds like you are visualising someone using a medical style needle and syringe to suck the medication out of the WLI pen and then inject themselves. But they aren't doing that.

The pen and the needle are separate elements. The pen contains the medication and depending on the supplier, will come with 4 needles. You can buy extra needles - readily available, without a syringe or pen.

The pens are the exact same as pens diabetics use for insulin (and most other patient administered injectables) and the needles are not pen specific. Most diabetics keep a large stock of needles in case one is bent or the thread is slightly off so it doesn't screw on the top of the pen correctly. It's sensible to have an excess stock of needles for the same reason. The needles are colloquially known as "diabetic needles" (as opposed to hypodermic) and if you search that term you get the correct ones.

I know what people are doing, that question was off the back of a poster saying you can take take it form the oen so I was asking why people are using insulin needles if they can take it (physically) from the pen as my understanding was that you cannot take no longer do this

@surreygirl1987 and @Youbutterbelieve sometimes that hard twist (which breaks the locking mechanism) actually breaks the whole internal mechanism and the plunger doesn’t work, so you can’t inject as normal. Hence using a syringe. Which you can then just continue with next time, rather than bother trying to hard twist the pen.

Many thanks- never had that issue so I'll just carry on as I am unless I do. I appreciate the advice though.

Why? We just turn the pen really really really hard until it snaps the capper.

We just turn it really hard too. Not sure anything snaps exactly, but a 'hard twist' enables us to use a fifth dose.

I've definitely seen some - but I'm a night owl usually so the dodgy posts that pop up then quite often are VERY dodgy 😂

I've not actually ever visited Sporner's Corner! I also deliberately stay away from the WLI board now because I found myself feeling incredibly irritated with the lack of transparency from those banging on about sharing their codes. In fairness, this was quite a while ago and I've not been back.

It's really difficult to discuss this subject without sounding like I'm being critical of WLI or the people that take them, and that's not my intention at all. I just wish the prescribing was handled differently - that's my main gripe really.

I had to jump through hoops to get my first pen and that was before the prescribing changes. i was very clearly over weight, BMI high 30's, but it took many photos and a direct conversation with them for them to accept me and prescribe. It needs better regulation on who can sell it, but people will go to dodgy websites and back street salons for anything. Thats not the fault of the medication, or the regulations on prescribing, its that people are dumb and the "black market" appeals to that dumbness.

GustyBaloo · 01/05/2025 18:15

istrich · 01/05/2025 17:37

This is a totally different perspective that really helps - thank you. I realised IWBU but this post has made me understand why/how and it make so much more sense with the IKEA/junky examples

Blimey, I hope you aren't being sarcastic because your reply would be a first for me 😂

It's true though. The injury odds of injection v's flat pack.
I should know!

Bellie710 · 01/05/2025 18:15

istrich · 01/05/2025 16:10

Because the prescription is 4 doses using the pen as directed not 5 doses, 4 as directed and one with a needle you bought online?

whatever you think about taking the extra you cannot deny the misuse element

I spoke to my Dr about people doing this and she said fair play, it is exactly the same stuff that you are injecting just gives you an extra weeks dose and saves on medication and money.

It is not misuse unless you are withdrawing the last dose and selling it someone else, the prescription is yours!

@SpidersAreShitheads I don’t think I’ve ever seen a post removed by MN because it contained dodgy medical advice. I’ve seen lots of posts on all sorts of topics left standing. Sporner’s Corner is rife with them!

I will say, from being on the WLI boards for a long time now and posting a lot, that there are some regular posters who pop up on these kinds of threads and post the sort of comments that you describe. It isn’t lots of people, and they usually get robustly challenged.

You can break the cap off and just use the pen to get the extra out, no drawing it off. I'm on Wegovy and the husband is on mj and we both do this.

I personally wouldnt as it not accurate, i tried it, it didnt click as cleanly as the previous doses, you cant guarentee you arent giving more or less of the medication, therefore i used an insulin syringe to ensure its exactly 0.6ml.

Youbutterbelieve · 01/05/2025 18:09

You're wrong. Most people are doing exactly that.
I've been doing it since my first pen, many months ago.

Why? We just turn the pen really really really hard until it snaps the capper.
