To think MNHQ should delete all chat about ‘the golden/bonus dose’ for those on WLI?

I use the weight loss forums quite a lot and with the arrival of WLI they are busier than ever. But, it’s worrying the amount of people who are misusing their prescription and discussing with others how to do so. Should MNHQ take action here?

Because the prescription is 4 doses using the pen as directed not 5 doses, 4 as directed and one with a needle you bought online?

whatever you think about taking the extra you cannot deny the misuse element

You can actually get the 5th dose out by forcefully twisting the pen with a nutcracker or similar. And then just use the normal needles supplied. I wouldn’t risk it with needles bought from Amazon or somewhere.

I asked my pharmacist about the surplus medication in my first pen and he actually said that some people like to get a 5th dose out but he wouldn’t recommend it…

Well you see I was told you can’t twist the pen, which is why I asked about it ages ago. In fact the people in here explaining it are mistily saying they use an insulin needle, so I’m not convinced you can use the pen at all, no

You can twist the pen. It doesnt always work. It "feels" less accurate. So, some/most people now as they changed the mechanism about 6 months ago, chose to draw it off with an insulin syringe.

Its really not that complicated.

thank all but I acknowledge I was BU ages ago. I have learned from this thread and I have no regrets posting it. I’m happy to be wrong I take no issue with that. I am a ‘rule’ follower generally and tend to not deviate from that but I am always happy to learn.

In answer to your original question - YABU of course MN should not be policing discussion of pragmatic use of prescribed medication.

You are clearly misinformed and AIBU is not the best place for debate on a niche topic.

whitecushions · 01/05/2025 19:20

I don’t even extract it, I just force the pen to click another dose! Been on it for a year and no issues. Not sure why you’re bothered!

SilenceInside · 01/05/2025 19:17

@istrich I have done both methods!

istrich · 01/05/2025 19:16

SilenceInside · 01/05/2025 19:14

@istrich surely you’ve realised by now there are two ways you can use the leftover liquid?!

One, by twisting the pen hard to break the locking mechanism, then using the pen as usual. Two, using a separate syringe.

Agreed they were BU.

The rest is just going round in circles.

No, the "wider audience" doesn't know what the F you're talking about and don't care.

(I didn't even know what WLI was until I clicked open the thread)

Ok thanks.

how is it taken then? if not via the pen?

An insulin needle which I have said so many times but someone said you just take it as you do the other doses. I’m confused about that because why would people be using an insulin needle if you can just die the pen?

Seriously? Hardly misuse of medication, given the cost and there is one full dose left I don’t blame users doing this. I find it incredible that it bothers you, I suspect most prescribers know it’s being done!

istrich · 01/05/2025 19:06

notatinydancer · 01/05/2025 18:36

Yes you can. I’ve drawn it up with diabetic syringes which I bought from the chemists.

I’m know. I was meaning physically form the pen as the other 4 doses.

Can I ask what prompted the post though?

In all honesty, you're not wrong in that prescription drugs are being openly abused and the means to do so are posted freely.
I openly abuse Mounjaro to get an extra dose.
Sometimes I abuse my other prescribed drugs to get some extra sleep! But I'm not condoning that, or naming the drugs or what I take because that would be frowned upon.

So, you aren't being unreasonable. You don't have to accept that you are.

I'm interested in your reasons though for not wanting it discussed.

Because I'm nosey like that!

I don't think it will be too long until 'golden dose' posts are banned. They are after all giving information about abusing a prescribed medication. I've got my syringes and badly built IKEA flat pack rubbish and I shall abuse.

I get prescribed 240mg codeine daily. I don't take it daily. If I took full dose I'd be in la la land feeling dizzy and shit. I don't like the stuff.
However if I did and started explaining to people that it's much better to snort it (for example!) I'd soon be banned.

So, OP isn't wrong. Those of us doing it have made our choices and don't see it as wrong.

It's a very fine line I think that's being drawn.

I don’t really know what promos it tbh. I just had a thought and went with it. Turns out I was definitely wrong to suggest it should not be discussed. I’m glad I have learned from this thread.

It used to be that you could ‘hard click’ and get the extra dose, but it appears they have changed the mechanism as it’s no longer possible. This is why people use syringes to extract the 5th dose. It’s nuts not to, imo.

We’re talking about very safe sub-cutaneous injections - it’s not like people are popping a vein.

I don't see the problem here. If people are using a syringe to get the last of the fluid in a pen what's the big deal? It's the same fluid they have been injecting for 4 weeks before. The extra amount is to allow for the priming of the needle before each injection. 🤷‍♀️
What's the big issue here?

I think it's the issue that, that last dose isn't part of your prescription. Therefore advice is being given on how to use a prescription drug that is against advice.

It's not a problem to me. I do it. Like I said though, if I started telling people how to use my 240mg codeine prescription differently, then it would be a different matter.

gerul · 01/05/2025 18:54

istrich · 01/05/2025 16:10

No, wider audience here and less likely to have bias from those who take the extra

Well my GP says it's safe. I'm more likely to believe him than a random stranger on mumsnet 😬

I'm glad you are engaging with your GP.

That's not entirely the point though about giving out information regarding a prescribed medication that's not intended to be used that way.

I get the extra dose, I've got my needles. I'm just playing devil's advocate especially since many don't even want their GP knowing, let alone the advice.
My GP would think it's great, he knows me.
My nurse rolled her eyes at me. That's fine, she knows nothing about me.

@BoldAmberDuck how to use the remaining medication has been explained several times on this thread. Either you try to hard twist the pen mechanism once it’s locked and hope it doesn’t totally break. You can then use the pen as normal for one more dose. Or, you can extract the medication using a 1ml syringe. That’s all it is.

Thank you

Where has the PP got the idea from that the majority of people on MJ are "abusing" it? What does that even mean?
