Keep seeing this pop up and think they sound pathetic . Am I alone in finding this annoying?

OP posts:

Why not just send photos to people you know privately? Why publicise your life and then get upset if strangers criticise it?

Because it’s quicker to post them once for everyone to see and I’m fundamentally quite a lazy person 🤷‍♀️

I also don’t really care what strangers think of me. I just find it quite amusing that so many people sneer at others having fun and enjoying themselves.

It’s like competitive misery on here at times.

Would you prefer they shared the blow by blow detail on unwholesome weekend?

Yes, yes I would 😂

TipsyRaven247 · 01/05/2025 09:05

Nobody is bloody forcing you to be on social media.

Starlight1984 · 01/05/2025 09:03

I know what you mean OP. The ones who post their "spend a wholesome weekend with me / spend a day with me resetting" and they have a reel of them going to the farmers market to buy fresh flowers, back to their cottage to bake bread and make elderflower drinks, then sitting and reading a book (which they're obviously not reading seeing as though they are filming themselves!) whilst a candle flickers in the background. All to the sound of calming music or birds cheeping. Irritating as fuck. And then everyone comments "This looks amazing!" "Wish I had your life!". Well, um, yes. That's exactly the intention of the video.

The amount of time and effort that must go into making sure everything looks perfect, setting the camera up in different places round the house, editing the videos, applying filters etc etc... It must takes hours. I can't think of anything less relaxing or wholesome on a weekend tbh!

Delete social media. You will miss it at first but honestly, whatever small amount of "hacks" or information you don't see that would be actually helpful is so worth it for not seeing all the other shite on there.

I re-download it if I do want to check on a local business (i.e. check the soft play isn't closed for a special event or whatever), and now that I don't engage with it I realise how batshit it is.

This is so true. I’m a few weeks in to deleting mine. I’ve set up a burner account where I have no friends and use it to occasionally check our local community pages.
Living in the real world is so wholesome 🤣🤣

This Gen X-er drags the family on the muddy field and beach walks but ensures they always end at a pub.

Yep. Gen X are used to wholesome walks through fields to get to raves.

I live 200 miles from my entire side of the family. A lot of DHs family are in a different country. Many of the extended family are older now and don't use things like WhatsApp (several don't even own a smartphone) but they do log onto FB on their computer of an evening and look at what their friends and family are up to. It's a very quick way to share with the whole family in one move.

I share photos of our weekend or days out or just something cute/funny DD has done, purely so they can see them. It means we feel connected and they get to see parts of her life that they wouldn't be able to usually because of the distance. If we all lived in the same place, I probably wouldn't use FB at all. I barely use anything else SM wise.

Our weekends probably do look "wholesome" because what we all enjoy is being in the garden or taking a trip to the park or walking somewhere nice with the dog while DD looks for different flowers or red leaves or pinecones. We also usually take a picnic on days out cos it saves money. I didn't know it was a "thing" to be "wholesome" these days (possibly not the worst craze that's been about). But I don't post to irritate anyone or be seen as "better than". Just to show family how DD is growing up and what were all up to.

Don't know whether anyone else would see it mind, as my privacy settings are pretty tight, mostly only family can see everything.

Feelinglikeadiv · 01/05/2025 08:53

I find this social media move towards telling people what to think / feel about them quite strange and controlling. It's both needy and badly concealed, I can see they require approval and yes, it's a bit pathetic.

As in, telling me one is blessed/ wholesome/ other adjectival phrase rather than allowing me to draw that conclusion from what I see. I quite often think 'ill be the judge of that'.

Wholesome weekend to me is just doing normal things that we did EVERY weekend as a child of the 80s. Now it’s an actual thing to label this weekend 🤣 Someone needs to tell these influencers that this is called real life and most of us live it every weekend 😆

gannett · 01/05/2025 08:52

Why do so many MNers follow people they don't like on social media? (Possibly: why do so many MNers dislike their supposed friends?) That's the real question.

I don't get annoyed by my friends' posts because I like them and I like seeing them happy.

I would probably get annoyed by twee hashtags but I wouldn't be friends with that sort of person in the first place - I've arranged my adult life to get away from conformist basics and have largely succeeded.

The are fine our teens they do stuff and go places

They don’t need stranger’s travel snaps, or weekend photos to know what to do with a bicycle.

They understand posting photos for the world is a load of egotistical bollocks.

They privately share photos of things they think their friends will like.

Because even with wholesome pursuits someone always has a better bike, a prettier sunset, a cleaner beach, a better picnic or whatever.

It sucks the joy out if just doing stuff.

Why don’t people just share things privately with people they know?

The photos are filtered the colours enhanced.

Perfect example when all of the UK saw the Northern Lights. What we saw with our eyes and what people posted on our local FB page were two completely different images. We took some lovely. accurate photos which were beautiful as they were, they were not skies full of light pink, that is what you could see through your phone camera. Which is not the same.

Edited fake photos, what is the point?

Edited

Obviously veering off the point of the thread here, but Northern Lights look very different with a camera than with the naked eye, that is absolutely true (and a bit of a disappointment to me when I realised it. But that doesn't mean all those coloured photos are fake. Of course some were additionally enhanced, but not all.

Jane958 · 01/05/2025 08:50

Wholesome (adjective) - conducive or suggestive of good health and physical wellbeing.
Sound in body, mind, or morals. Somebody who is pure of heart, devoid of corruption or malice, modest, stable, virtuous, and all-around sweet and compassionate.
Given some of the posts above, the second definition is somewhat ironic.

I have had a "wholesome" morning so far, looking up recipes, having a shower and folding laundry. A bit of wholesome ironing may follow.

I will get less wholesome later with a large glass of single malt scotch :-)

But seriously, almost everyone seems to be out in the fresh air (nothing wrong with that) pretentiously calling it "forest bathing"...

PoorUncleBarry · 01/05/2025 08:48

I'm rather fond of a wholesome weekend. I enjoy a whole pizza followed by a whole cake whilst binge watching a whole series of Little House on the Prairie and ignoring the whole fucking world. Give it a go, it's great.

On a serious note, have never encountered the phrase before today.

I love seeing photos of places people go to. The hikes up Ben Nevis or the days out in the woods or the holiday snaps of Bali or Greece.

I don't much care for the ones of people posing but the ones of scenery or animals I absolutely love.

TheAmusedQuail · 01/05/2025 08:48

TBH, if I don't lose my shit at a playground or the swimming pool or an event, I class that as wholesome.

See this is such a change in generational thinking… Gen X would get off on the ‘blow by blow detail of an unwholesome weekend.’ That would be epic and a REAL weekend. Climbing some hill, walking a muddy field and drinking some oat milk? Boring as shit. Get a life.

This Gen X-er drags the family on the muddy field and beach walks but ensures they always end at a pub.

So why is only the 'wholesome' stuff that apparently gives the message 'we're better than you'?

If your issue is with the fake way people present themselves on social media then surely they are all trying to give that message? 'Look at me, I have more friends than you!', 'look at me, I have more fun than you!'

So people are unhappy with own weekends?

Dymaxion · 01/05/2025 08:45

God I yearn for a wholesome weekend, and I appreciate people online showing me how its done, so thoughtful of them to share.

I don't post anything but happily read and see other people do because I assume that is the point of SM? I love seeing people's adventures etc. And I am not sat at home seething how hard done by I am or how jealous or inferior nor do I feel judged I am happy to see people hiking Ben Nevis or eating bugs in Thailand or whatever, saves me doing it

Same with people who compliance about why people start certain threads, because that is the point of a forum?

AliBaliBee1234 · 01/05/2025 08:43

I love seeing wholesome weekend posts. A bit of joy and happiness in life.

Some people are so miserable

I have a friend who is much younger than me and I had noticed recently she had described a few of her weekends as wholesome when I asked her how her weekend was. I didn't realise it was A Thing!

Yes I have a friend who describes his weekends as wholesome. Think it's a younger generation thing.

When I was younger there was nothing wholesome about getting shit faced in a club, then continuing said night out at someone's house. We also didn't post it on social media.

But a lot of the younger generations don't get shit faced.

faerietales · 01/05/2025 08:42

MN is so sneery about other people doing things they love and (shock) posting about it on social media.

I personally love that my friends and family do things that make them happy and if they want to share that online then good for them.

It’s much better than being a miserable so-and-so who just seems to want everyone to be bored and unhappy all the time 🤷‍♀️

A wholesome weekend sounds like a Pentecostal weekend retreat!
