Personalised number plates - cringey?

Inspired by the mum I see most mornings on the school run. Range Rover, personalised plate, leggings tucked into white socks - I’m sure you know the type!

Anyway, personalised number plates - yay or nay?

@DrPrunesqualeryeah I know that 🙄

I was pointing out that going ‘eww rich show off self absorbed wankers’ is a massive generalisation and that there are other reasons people may have one.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 29/04/2025 22:14

@Lonelycrabwe all - if we drive - also have to have a reg plate too 🤷‍♀️

Your arguments are shit mate; just own it and admit you’re unpleasantly judgy! We’re all anonymous here, you can just say it.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 29/04/2025 22:11

I don’t have one 🤣

I just think you’re very very wrong that everyone buys them to impress others: I work in the car industry and while there are a great number of rich wankers who like to show off, they’re outnumbered by people who just love everything and anything about cars, and who love and breathe every little detail of them.

For a lot of them, they save for years to get a project car, and spend many more years rebuilding it by hand, down to the smallest detail. Why wouldn’t they include a reg that makes them smile while they’re at it?

Your basic snidey judgement just shows that you don’t get it.

Not everyone with a PNP builds their own car
You are referring to a tiny tiny % of people.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 29/04/2025 22:13

@ICanTellYouMissMe thats a completely different scenario though

all of the silly reg plates are on totally boring run of the mill generic cars not enthusiasts project cars

ICanTellYouMissMe · 29/04/2025 22:11

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 21:17

And it marks those people out as being shallow. So feel great about your PN. But accept that a lot of people are going cringe that’s all.

Meh..
I can see the point when it's a company car and the plate is used for extra advertising.
Personal ones - I don't really get it but I don't have any special hatred of them.

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 22:05

ItsSummerSoon · 29/04/2025 21:59

Yes but I might think how you look is cringe.

And equally I might think you do too. Welcome to life.

You wouldn’t think my number plate is cringe though.

Alleycat321 · 29/04/2025 22:03

My personalised number plate is PR05 LEG which cost £299 and, yes, I am an amputee.

ItsSummerSoon · 29/04/2025 22:00

Springhassprungxx · 29/04/2025 21:55

I hate them with a passion

Why does it bother you so much?

ItsSummerSoon · 29/04/2025 21:59

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 21:50

Difference is we all have to have clothes, footwear and some sort of haircut.

Yes but I might think how you look is cringe.

Pricelessadvice · 29/04/2025 21:57

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 21:13

No it’s not a slagging off of people “richer than me” one bit, most properly rich people don’t have PN.. It’s the thought that one thinks a PN is actually going to impress anyone. Good clothes or taking the effort to look good yourself is a positive thing, and that definitely has value.

Going to the effort to broadcast anything like that on the front of your car (no matter how flash) is cringey; it’s shallow.

Surely by that you also think that people buying flashy new cars are also shallow?
Some people buy branded clothes that cost a lot of money. Are they also cringey and shallow? Going on an expensive foreign holiday, is that cringey or shallow?

People can choose to spend their money however they want. I can’t imagine being remotely bothered by someone’s purchases if it’s not harming me or anyone else.

Life is short. If people want to buy a personalised reg, then good for them.

I have just remembered a VW van one of the pricey ones (obviously LOADS ‘richer’ than me of course) been behind him a few times lately has some kind of concoction that vaguely states “YES I SURF”

As if someone was asking the question

XenoBitch · 29/04/2025 21:52

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 20:54

Because most people just get a car that they like and drive around with a random collection of letters and numbers on their number plate.

People who care about what numbers and letters are on their number plate are obviously very interested in themselves; they’ve paid money and spent time to tell people they’re different and unique…

With their number plate

Cringe

The topic of this thread has come up before, and like that one, there are replies from people who have personalised plates that you would never think were personalised. They picked numbers and letters that have meaning to them.
Initials, and something like a wedding anniversary date. You would have no idea if you saw it.

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 21:50

ItsSummerSoon · 29/04/2025 21:44

I wonder how how many people saying cringe are walking around with cringe clothes, cringe hair & cringe footwear.

Difference is we all have to have clothes, footwear and some sort of haircut.

MasterBeth · 29/04/2025 21:49

I couldn't afford a personalised number plate so I changed my name to RB27THN.

SlowAndFurious · 29/04/2025 21:47

For me they are in the list of things I wouldn’t bother spending money on. Some of the business ones are amusing.
Most of the people I know with them are instawankers although I do have a good friend with an obscure one who isn’t in the slightest, her socks are firmly hidden!

People spend a lot of time in their car, it makes sense to make it personalised to the individual if they choose to do so. It's not something I have strong thoughts about either way.

True I’m going to make some cafe curtains for mine in a ditsy print

DrPrunesqualer · 29/04/2025 21:42

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 20:25

I saw one the other day

It said.. MONNEY 1

On a 15 year old Audi A4😂

Well they obviously didn’t have much money. I mean, would you be seen driving around in that?

Crap Car near us has PC12OOK
ie
P CROOK. and you know what, he actually is ! Talk about advertising it 🤣🤣

MyNameIsX · 29/04/2025 21:26

You want attention? Well, you’ve got it.

People know where you are, when you away from home.

They are conspicuous.

Sorry I don’t really see how having a personal reg makes the blindest bit of difference to someone casing your house out or planning to steal your car.

thinktwice36 · 29/04/2025 21:39

Hate personalised number plates. So cringe.

DrPrunesqualer · 29/04/2025 21:35

MyNameIsX · 29/04/2025 19:08

They are utter w&nk, and the people who have them are, ergo, utter w&nkers.
Especially those who put them on a 10k motor, or those who have a 100k set of wheels, parked outside a house barely worth more….

You know who you are.

Edit: All of you on MN who have them, are excluded from the above description - you are all lovely and possess taste etc.

And MyNameIsX cracks it again !

@icelolly12

nothing really wrong - but it’s be nice to stand out or be unique for a good reason that took some effort - not that you managed to do a Search on dvla for a reg plate
