Strangest thing you've had stolen from you?

Am really annoyed that someone has probably stolen the center cap off my car wheel , have looked on Ebay for a replacement, none fit, contact the main dealer - £50 to replace. £50! Dealer has assured me there is NO OTHER COMPATIBLE wheel cap, so will likely just suck it up and pay which is the last thing we need this month.

What other weird things have people had stolen? (Call me naïve but I thought the world had moved on from stealing other peoples things!)

This exact thing happened to my grandparents, was it in Pateley Bridge ? They had special York stone stolen from their patio, my grandpa said it was from York Abbey. It was stolen whilst they went out for a walk back in the late 90s or early 2000s I guess .

No not PB but not a million miles away. A lot of our town has York stone pavements and apparently they’ve been coated in some sort of smart water in case of theft.

My neighbour had the path to her house stolen in the dead of night. It was beautiful York stone, about 20 slabs, and nobody heard a thing. Was glad they didn’t come to ours as we have a large patio made of it, but gutted for her.

I stupidly left a window open in my car and my satnav was nicked. It didn't break my heart as it was about 10 years old and had never been updated, in fact if anyone was stupid enough to buy it off the thief they would have regretted it instantly. However, the thieves ignored all my CDs - I didn't quite know whether to be pleased or offended at the fact that they obviously despised my music tastes.

This isn't a strange thing to have stolen - in fact it is a logical thing but I'll mention it because it happened for such a long time.

Every Sunday night we would have one bottle of milk(out of five) stolen and a pizza box left in our privet hedge. So someone walking home from the pub very late (after midnight) with a takeaway would have finished it by the time they got to our house, then take the milk to quench their thirst and leave their rubbish.

We told the milkman to cancel our order as we would buy from supermarket instead. Then in addition to still getting the empty pizza box every week, because there was no milk, our wheelie bin would be tipped over.

After this had been going on a while, everyone on the road would have their bins tipped over. You could hear bins going over for ages every Sunday night and anyone who challenged this person would have a fruitless chase on their hands as he was quick.

Of course the police caught the person eventually as it took ages to tip every bin over and he was caught in the act. He was walking home from the pub with someone else's milk that he'd picked up along the road.

Can't believe that it went on for so long before the police actually decided to act.

It turned out to be the son of our ex milkman who lived just a few hundred yards further up the road - he'd lived in our house as a child.

As a kid my parents car was broken into. Early 90s. I had left my ballet box in the boot. It was a hard sort of cardboard box, with a ballerina on the front and my leotard and shoes inside. Nothing else was stolen (radio etc was what was normal to steal back then). Wtf did they take a small child’s dance uniform.

My DFs car was stolen. Kids would nick a car, drive to the next village, nick another....
Police found it and said they were sorry but it wasn't in great shape. Dad went to collect and apart from 1 keyed mark in the dashboard it was in exactly the same condition as it was when stolen! He didn't tell the police that when they were pointing out the damage though!

changedusernameforthis1 · 29/04/2025 23:58

A mobile phone. Now before you say that's not all that unusual - it was stolen from the person who gifted it to me.
Long story short, she found out AFTER gifting it to me that it was actually stolen, hence the extremely low price, and panicked. Came to visit me, waited for me to use the bathroom, grabbed it and bolted.

Mama2many73 · 29/04/2025 23:55

Mÿ Dyson Hoover. Kept looking for it, asked dh to check the house incase I was overlooking it. Asked family if they'd borrowed it....suddenly remembered I'd washed the filters and parts were on the back step drying (rest was just in the doorway). Our son was playing in back street with friends so it was a purely opportunist theft .
Reported to local police so could claim on insurance. Policeman said he'd had a wood/metal framed bench, which was screwed into the concrete, stolen from secure back garden with 7ft fences.

The planters out the front of my house, the ones attached to my actual house. All caught on cctv.

Friend ran a pub. One day someone opened the toilet cistern and stole the cleaning tablet inside.
curtains from a GP surgery.

We ran pubs for about 20yrs and had alsorts nicked. A toilet was the most bizarre though.

Someone stole my doormat once. I’d only had it a week or two, it was outside the front door (as doormats are). It was about 2pm in the afternoon; I heard someone come through the gate and waited for a knock on the door but it never came so I went to see if anyone was there, and the doormat had gone. Just…why?

Vladandnikki · 29/04/2025 21:47

Food waste bin. You can pick them up for free from local council office 🤷‍♀️

CandyCane457 · 29/04/2025 21:29

I live in an apartment by the canal and have a lovely, huge patio space next to the canal path. I have tubs of plants with ornamental flamingos sticking out of them. I was once sat outside sunbathing and a man was walking down the canal path, dont think he saw me, and he suddenly reached through the railings and yanked a flamingo out of one flower pot and threw it in the canal. I was gobsmacked! It was so unecessary!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 29/04/2025 21:22

Oh gosh I just remembered, I had an old beater car that I couldn’t lock. Someone stole my scraggly and sad artificial Christmas tree from the back seat! I remember cursing their Christmas’s for all eternity.

Years later I was mentioning to coworkers that I hadn’t bought a new on since the theft and one offered me their old one. It was the same scraggly tree! Well not the same one as I had relocated since the theft… but the same model. We had a laugh as I jokingly accused him 😁

Was it a Reliant Robin, or did they leave one wheel behind?

🤣 No it was a Ford Cortina with Go-fasta Stripes. They nicked 3 wheels and left 1 and propped 3 the missing spaces up on bricks. It was dark & late and we didn't notice it until he started the car up. I did date a biker who had a Del Boy yellow Reliant Robin as he could drive it on a motor bike licence. It had no reverse & we used to have to push it to reverse it.

Allseeingallknowing · 29/04/2025 21:21

My friend had a bag nicked, containing her urine sample collected in an old miniature whiskey bottle! Very mellow flavour, I bet!

Auburngal · 29/04/2025 21:10

Friend got broken into about ten years ago. Just stole a bag of Babybels from fridge and the bottle of supermarket own vodka on the sideboard. Bottle only had a fifth of the contents left. Yet a full bottle of Absolut next to it!

Me and an ex boyfriend went to drive home after a night out at Reading Top Rank Suite circa '78 and someone has stolen 3 of his car tyres and propped the car up on bricks.

Was it a Reliant Robin, or did they leave one wheel behind?

Porkychops · 29/04/2025 21:01

On an outward bounds type holiday my entire toiletry bag went missing, presumably stolen. This was before the days of premium skin care so I don't know why anyone would want it. Where I used to live a neighbour put his mop out to dry and someone stole it!!

oh lord i have done that to my mother in law. she has those annoying sound like ornaments that make noise when you walk past them 🙄 everytime we go there( and not just us but other members of family too ) sneakily move it to the bin or throw it in the car to go in our bin. latest one was a gnome that whistles every time you walk past it. like why ?
she has cottoned on it us we think but because of there us like 10 of us altogether she can't blame a specific one 🤣 but just keeps buying them

🤣twas v funny watching folk jump😁, the postie called it a few choice words, I suspect him. To be honest when I forgot I called it a green twat a couple of times 🤣🤣🐸🐸🐸🐸.

NewsdeskJC · 29/04/2025 20:28

Not me but a friend worked in Habitat in Milton Keynes back in the last century.
They had a wooden tree thing used to display maybe 20/25 cushions. The entire thing was nicked one Saturday afternoon. A customer asked about a cushion "oh yes, we have one here on the stand". No stand, no cushions
It remained a mystery and cctv was yet to be used in shops

Apreslapluielesoleil · 29/04/2025 20:22

Cover off the spare wheel of my 4x4. Stupid idea to put them on the back of a vehicle with a “special” cover on them.

BetterWithPockets · 29/04/2025 20:19

Not read the full thread, but does anyone remember the post where a friend had stolen the OP’s sunglasses, I think it was, then blatantly lied about it. I think (hope!) the OP got them back in the end…
I’ve had a pair of (used!) walking boots stolen from my porch. They weren’t even particularly fancy/expensive ones but they were very comfy and I was gutted.
Also — the opposite situation — we were burgled and they took various electronic stuff, including my DH’s laptop. A year or so later, I was going through some stuff — and, lo, there was his laptop. I tried to tell our insurance company but they said not to worry about it. (TBF, it was very cheap!)

saltinesandcoffeecups · 29/04/2025 20:06

Can I confess? To set the stage… this was while I was at university and I belonged to a large group of friends from related but different clubs.

some friends and I went to a house party held by other friends who shared a house. I don’t know why we thought it was a good idea drinking…yes drinking is why this was a good idea at the time but we thought it would be fun to take one of the guy’s desk chairs. Ok so at the time all student furnishings were basically the crap your parents were tired of so gave you to go to school (the pic is is the exact one that we took but I think his was orange)

So anyway this chair rode around in my friend’s car for a week until the following weekend when we went to a different house party. Somebody probably me thought it would be funny to swap a desk chair at the current house with the one in the car. So we did. It was just as bad as the original one.

This practice of swapping chairs went on for several weeks at different houses until we got bored of it and promptly forgot about. Right up until we ended up back at the original house and all the guys were going on about the desk chair (very much like this thread “who would steal a crappy desk chair?!”)… several of the guys lived in the various houses we did this at, so then all of the similar stories came out.

Without missing a beat I blamed the rival club to mine and wandered away sheepishly.

Strangest thing you've had stolen from you?
