Strangest thing you've had stolen from you?

Am really annoyed that someone has probably stolen the center cap off my car wheel , have looked on Ebay for a replacement, none fit, contact the main dealer - £50 to replace. £50! Dealer has assured me there is NO OTHER COMPATIBLE wheel cap, so will likely just suck it up and pay which is the last thing we need this month.

What other weird things have people had stolen? (Call me naïve but I thought the world had moved on from stealing other peoples things!)

Not me, but after I’d got married, my parents had a break in. They left lots of valuable antiques but took the microwave oven.

Returned to our student house one evening to find that someone had nicked the gas boiler and the fridge. Thankfully, the landlord believed us.

My washing line! I went to hang my washing out only to realise it was gone! 😆

😂😂

Manzana · 29/04/2025 13:11

we had an old house brick with a trio of letters stamped into it, very ordinary but we kept it because of the letters. Next doors builders nicked it, we know it was one of them, my partner spoke to the foreman and it was returned the next day. We also had a stags horn hanging up and I removed it somewhere safe as one of the builders had shown an interest in it and asked could he have it.

Coffeeforayear · 29/04/2025 13:11

Not me, but local to me a couple of people have had newly planted laurel trees nicked.

Ooh, a monkey stole my and my husband's toothbrushes several years ago!

Were you also innocently carrying them down the street in Lombok, Indonesia, when an errant vicious monkey demanded them?

A monkey once stole my shampoo.

My dad had a 6 foot conifer/Christmas tree growing in his back garden - one December he noticed it was missing - someone had just come in over the fence, cut it down and stolen it.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 29/04/2025 13:01

Old house got broken into Xmas week of 2009 so all presents out and ready to be wrapped, tones of cash and even our new puppy downstairs.... for them to just take all the carrots?! and some chocolate boxes.
My uncle chased them down the street while we called the police and said they were off their heads on drugs so would of probably just grabbed the first thing they saw

Someone stole my hat and coat out of my car years ago. It was a 2CV, so I rarely locked it, as most people couldn't cope with the gear stick. A nice but not posh long black coat from Chelsea Girl and a floppy black velvet beret. Grr.

Also, someone popped the lock of my car overnight outside my son's flat in London, stole the cassette player but carefully placed the cassette that was inside on the passenger's seat. It was Bach's violin concertos and I didn't know whether to be pleased that I'd still got a favourite cassette or offended that they thought my taste was rubbish.

Edited

I just love that you were driving around in a 2CV wearing a floppy black velvet beret! 😂❤️

A younger cousin,in their teens so should know better, stole my dad's hairbrush . He's very fussy about the brush he uses they are old style with black bristles made from some sort of soft plastic and cannot be got anywhere these days . He said she picked it up brushed her hair and put it in her bag. He visited a few weeks later and saw it and stole it back 😆.

freezingmytoesoff · 29/04/2025 12:42

Had a house party and someone stole the plug for my phone charger. Unplugged it, took the plug, left the lead sad and alone next to the socket.

Bizarre.

Cognacsoft · 29/04/2025 12:42

Some years ago my uncle went to outpatients and when he returned to the car a very smart woman was removing the newly planted spring flowers from the hospital borders.
Uncle told her to stop but she was brazen.

£10

My ex is a nasty piece of work and refused to pay for his kids,so I was really struggling to feed them (he of course had money,he just didn't see why he should have to feed his own children)

I'd save £10 to cover us for food over the weekend

The bellend ex came round to pick up his kids (he was only doing this to control and hurt me)

I went for the tenner so I could nip to the shop and it had gone

He'd been the only person that could have taken it

He denied it but I know he did by the look on his face

£10 was loose pocket change to him but was my lifeline

A few years later,I had a friend who was jealous of my life and would help herself to anything she thought she deserved

A necklace,my mobile phone,make up,the kids/my clothes and money all disappeared

When I'd realised,I dumped her and she started claiming id stolen from her!

Took me over a year to shake her off

GanninHyem · 29/04/2025 12:39

A set of ratty old hair extensions and a full bottle of fabric conditioner were the more bizarre items stolen from us when broken into.

JustMeHello · 29/04/2025 12:37

I once moved into a student flat, and inside we found a park bench, two Dundee city council bins (huge green things), a coffee table made of bound stacks of newspapers (the kind that delivery companies leave outside the newsagents at 5am), a giant cable reel coffee table, several traffic cones, a danger men at work sign over the toilet and a crossing lollipop.

@YesThatsATurdOnTheRug exactly I am naiive as I said!
I've reached the grand age of 31 without having had anything like it happen before. My parents were always telling me stories of things being stolen back in the 80s + 90s!

I think it’s just changed a bit, it used to be pickpocketing, house clearances and now I hear of more coming in the house to get car keys, getting into cars to nick things, power tools from vans and sheds.
The thing is in most of these posts I see on fb, the car or house has been left unlocked. I don’t get why anyone doesn’t lock things

SunshineInMySprocket · 29/04/2025 12:33

A beautiful red wool coat from the coat rack in the porch of my parents’ house. I came in, took it off, had dinner and when I went to leave it was gone. No-one else had left the house & you can see through to the porch as the door has a glass pane. Complete and utter mystery.

Auburngal · 29/04/2025 12:32

Having a colonoscopy on Friday. The package with letter was posted to me on Thursday. It arrived damaged as RM put package in a plastic bag "apologies that your mail was received like this". The package was sliced down one side and the Plenvu prep pack was missing. If it fell out, the package would have been more torn.

Hopefully whoever stole the Plenvu didn't realise its strong laxatives and took them before reading the pack!😆

TickTickTock · 29/04/2025 12:30

When we were burgled, they took jewellery, and for some reason the roller blind from the bedroom! Nothing else 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 29/04/2025 12:29

A little metal Egyptian cat statue that my dad bought me when I was 10.
it disappeared from my house back when I was on the dating scene before I met now DH, so I can only think that one of the dates I bought back to the house stole it.

starfishmummy · 29/04/2025 12:28

Some edging stones from our path - which I assume are the original edwardian. I imagine the thieves got disturbed as I spotted a few of the pieces propped up against the garden wall as I arrived back from shopping. In fact they got away with just two - which is annoying as we have been unable to find matching replacements!

Londonmummy66 · 29/04/2025 12:28

One of the finials from our front railings. Thick metal so they must have sawed through it. Some scumbag also stole a set of 4 planters with boxballs from our front steps. I was really annoyed as I'd spent hours painting the planters dark green.

Tarkan · 29/04/2025 12:27

The last time we were moving house we were dismantling DC’s trampoline when I realised the ladder was missing. It was a pretty high trampoline and really needed the ladder for DC to get on it.

Two doors down was a much lower trampoline with a suspiciously ill-fitting ladder on it. There were people in the garden at the time and we didn’t want to confront them so went on with our move.

Then one night a few weeks later DH and I were walking home from the pub down our old street and realised the ladder was still there so we ran into their garden and stole it back. Surprise, surprise, it was a perfect fit for our trampoline.

Friend ran a pub. One day someone opened the toilet cistern and stole the cleaning tablet inside.
curtains from a GP surgery.

How did they possibly managed to nick the curtains from the GP surgery?😺
