Strangest thing you've had stolen from you?

Am really annoyed that someone has probably stolen the center cap off my car wheel , have looked on Ebay for a replacement, none fit, contact the main dealer - £50 to replace. £50! Dealer has assured me there is NO OTHER COMPATIBLE wheel cap, so will likely just suck it up and pay which is the last thing we need this month.

What other weird things have people had stolen? (Call me naïve but I thought the world had moved on from stealing other peoples things!)

Compost from the compost bin. They left the bin behind.

It was completely contaminated with potato scab, so I'd been wondering how to get rid.

I was delighted someone fixed that for me

Someone broke into my car when parked overnight 300 miles from home. Stole a very good sleeping bag (gutted as it was pretty unique and very new), and a large box of very plastic perpetual wall calendars branded in the company name. Must have struggled to carry both as the box was an awkward size and quite heavy.

My exh stole my
kitchen sink plug! I can’t prove it was him but it’s exactly the sort of thing he’d do if he didn’t have one.. he still thinks what’s mine is his.. 😫

My nephew once stole a hairdryer from my house. He was probably about 19, from a comfortable home and the hairdryer was a £9.99 Argos type. I got over it but last year realised his true nature and am now happily estranged, some 15 years on.

Vending machine from the foyer of the magistrates' court, middle of the day with lots of people milling about. Just walked in wearing overalls and put it on a trolley and wheeled it out. Looked official and confident etc and all the actual staff just assumed it was someone else's department / authorization / whatever.

Not me but my mum’s car got stolen. It was found later that evening. It was all smashed up but the only thing actually taken was a tape of Bach Cello Suites. No other tapes taken either!

It was massively inconvenient and very upsetting for my mum not to have a car for a bit but we were always curious to know why Yo Yo Ma playing Bach was taken.

Having a pub it used to be ashtrays, now it’s bar runners and the plants out the pots in the back, home wise we were burgled many years ago. They left two computers ( too big maybe ) but took the children’s stash of jelly babies and a steak from the fridge !

You've just reminded me of when my old flat in central London got burgled whilst I was away. The thief/thieves stole a large bar of chocolate & wine from the fridge, some hair extensions, packs of tights, CDs, clothing & lingerie but left the electronic items. We concluded it was kids, a female or some kind of pervert.

BlaBlaWhatever · 17/11/2025 20:33

We had a hub cap nicked while we were away for the weekend leaving the car in a long stay carpark. We also had the electric plug which linked the caravan to the car cut off while the caravan was parked outside our house....DH was cross about that as it was a real faff having to rewire the whole system once he'd bought a new plug.
Some lowlifes tried to steal the homemade Christmas wreath I'd hung on our front door one year..... but I'd padlocked it on, so although they bent it out of shape they couldn't get it off the door.
The weirdest theft was of the rotating warning light attached to our gate to warn traffic that someone was about to pull out (installed after someone took my bumper off as I inched carefully out with my view obscured by the wall.) It was an old light we'd repurposed and without the electric system DH had rigged up (which they left ) it would have been no use to anyone.

The jack point cover off our old Saab.

That was the day I realised that jumping up and down in fury was a real thing.

When my daughter was in India, monkeys used to hang around in the trees near the shop, and if someone came out with fruit (usually sold in a clear plastic bag) they would leap down, steal it, and run back up the tree, then eat the fruit and throw the peel and bags back at the victim, shrieking with monkey laughter!!!

This was in Indonesia!

Back, back, back in the olden days my granny's friend came to visit. Her baby had a dirty nappy and my granny wrapped it up for her in a sheet of newspaper.
Someone helped themselves to this parcel on the bus. 70 years later my granny would still chortle at the thought of this thief spotting a mystery parcel, sneaking off with it and then unwrapping a dirty nappy.

About 60 years ago, my aunt was on the bus, going to the doctor, taking a urine sample with her. The only container she could find was a small whisky bottle, which she washed thoroughly before decanting her wee into it. Someone who pickpocketed her shopping basket got a nasty surprise 🤣

Oh, I forgot this one....an entire, fully assembled Little Tikes playhouse from our enclosed back yard. They must have carried it up 6 steps, through the stone gateway, then about 20 yards along a back alley to get it to their vehicle. We had a skip in the alley at the time, and we think that attracted scrappies/skip divers who then wandered along the alley to see what else they could lift. My little girl was heartbroken, and is still angry about it 30 years later!!!

Wordsmithery · 17/11/2025 19:11

The rubber strip trim thing off the roof of my car. Didn't pinch the other one so it now looks ridiculous. Can't afford to replace.

Bikergran · 17/11/2025 19:09

£50, that's why they've nicked it, to replace one of theirs after they've damaged a wheel. I bought my husband a set of MSport tyre valve caps as a little stocking filler one year, and they disappeared one day when we were parked at a big shopping centre.

At my dad's veterinary surgery, someone pinched a solid air freshener out of the loo, and the vacuum cleaner out of the hallway cupboard!

My aunt lost some new lacy knickers off her washing line, they found the culprit ( a local teenager) and police asked if she wanted them back!!! She declined....🤢

A Tom Jones cassette tape from the car.
Yet on the backseat was a sports bag with equipment and clothes.

It's not unusual

Thatsalineallright · 17/11/2025 14:29

Someone stole a waterproof rain cover I had on my bike saddle. It costs like 1 pound max on Amazon. So petty.

Candystripes85 · 17/11/2025 14:27

A old man once asked me for a £1 coin to get a trolley at Aldi, I didn’t have one but had a trolley key ring you could put in, unlock the trolley and pull out again. I did that for him and he struggled to get the trolley out as the wheels were jammed, so I gave him the trolley key ring to hold while I unjammed the trolley. He walked off with the key ring and left me with the trolley.

I was having a particularly fraught run up to Christmas, culminating in some lowlife snatching my handbag at the supermarket as I unloaded my shopping into my car. Instinctively I lobbed the item that was in my hand at him. It happened to be a jar of Branstons pickle, so nice and heavy. I am an absolutely lousy shot, but miraculously it hit him on the head. He yelped and dropped the bag and ran off. I was feeling quite proud of myself but then it went a bit downhill. What I meant to do was shout after him a stream of impressive swear words, what actually came out of my mouth was "You're a very naughty boy!" Not quite the 'don't mess with me' image I was trying to project!

This cracked me up 🤣 especially the Monty python quote

honeylulu · 17/11/2025 10:18

I have posted upthread but this one is more recent. That's been a couple of burglaries in our street recently, targeting people with new cars so the main purpose of the break in seems to be to get the car keys, though other stuff gets grabbed as well. Police asked one family to check room by room what was missing. They were astonished to find a pack of sausages had been taken from the fridge. The police found their cars, TV and other stuff but as for the sausages, I think the evidence had been eaten.

My wedding shoes :( Rather drunkenly took them off in the hall outside our hotel suite when stumbling back in at midnight, the next morning they’d vanished. Never turned up at lost property or with the cleaning crew. Just seems weird to take someone’s expensive white shoes with their initials engraved and a sixpence stuck to the bottom… pretty obvious what they were and it was a quite posh hotel too. I’m still grumpy about it even though it was partly my fault.

This didn't happen to me but a family in Skelmersdale, Lancs had their newly laid turf lawn stolen from their front garden. It was caught on their CCTV--a woman coolly strolled up, rolled up the turf and took it away! The video was posted online for a while, not sure if it's still up.

We have an apple tree in our front garden and someone nicked all the apples overnight. We were well narked as we were looking forward to eating them.

I know this is a old thread and you may not still be here but your post has cracked me up 😂 I'm from Skelmersdale and honestly never thought I'd see the town mentioned online nevermind on Mumsnet. I can totally believe this happening 😂😂😂🙈

A few things...my toiletry bag when I went away on an outward bound type c9urse in my youth, a watch when I was working as a carer for someone who was paralysed...obviously it wasn'thim so i think someone put their hand in the window and took it, left a jacket in a hotel and rang them and they mysteriously didnt have it. The last one didnt happen to me but i heard someone moaning that he had put his mop out to dry and someone pinched it.

HungreeHipp0 · 16/11/2025 18:55

Our, completely full garden waste bin. That thing was heavy.
