Offended by friend’s comments about party food

We hosted my friend, her husband and three kids yesterday afternoon. Our sons are in the same football team and we said we’d put some food on at ours after and watch the Liverpool match who they both support. My friend agreed to party style food being the best option as everyone could pick at it as and when.

Amongst other things, there was - Indian selection, tempura prawns, sausage rolls, mini pizza’s, mini sausages, chips, breaded chicken. So a good mix all from Iceland where we’ve had positive comments on the food before.

I could tell my friends’ youngest looked unimpressed when they tried one of the items, and pulled a face to my friend. She made no
attempt to get them to try another item and basically said ‘I know’. I noticed five minutes later she had barely ate anything herself either.

15/20 minutes later, the youngest moaned again and this time my friend said ‘don’t worry, we will stop at McDonald’s on the way back as I’m hungry too.’

I text her after they left to say sorry if they didn’t enjoy the food. She replied to say they didn’t realise it would be that sort of food and that they’d have got something else before coming round if they realised!!

AIBU to find this really snobby and ungrateful? The fact she then took the kids to get a McDonald’s makes no sense!!

I feel so bad and angry for you. You did a really nice thing, and your friend and her brats were extremely rude. At first I thought they must be used to eating less processed food at home since they frowned upon your food, but the fact that they thought McDonald's is okay, but not the food you provided tells me that these people are just super rude and ungrateful. I don't particularly enjoy party kind of food, but I'd never dream of saying anything to someone who's kindly put a spread on for me. There's always something that is good to eat, so you eat it and thank the host for their generosity.

Lol at all the smug posters falling all over themselves to tell you how they would have done it so much better as well, OP. Smile, nod and ignore!

And all the posters insisting there must be fruit- as if there would be an outbreak of scurvy if fruit was missed out at one meal.

Hwi · 28/04/2025 21:44

Snobby? No - because she will 'stop by McDonald's' later on. Rest assured on that one. Ungrateful - yes, and also poor manners, her and her children. You should not have apologised. This is what happens when people apologise to elicit a reaction, not because they want to apologise.

Heronwatcher · 28/04/2025 21:43

I think they might have been expecting sandwiches, crudités, hummus, sausage rolls and cake? I’m not picky but I don’t like the sort of thing you cooked personally and my kids don’t really like it either. I suspect the mum might just have realised her kids wouldn’t eat it.

Your friend has no manners. But I’m really curious as to what her version of ‘party food’ is. Too late to ask her…?

Flytrap01 · 28/04/2025 21:42

the majority of food is better than mc donalds, i only eat mc d now when the app has the cheap offers on it

JackieDaytonaLuckyBrews · 28/04/2025 21:42

I hope you don't plan to have much to do with her in the future OP? She sounds like an ill mannered twat. I'd have sent back the thumbs up emoji and not bothered with her again.

Horses7 · 28/04/2025 21:42

I always hide wrappers! I’ve passed off M&S stuff as my own on occasions - it’s amazing what you can get away with once it’s in your own dishes! 🤣

Gemmawemma9 · 28/04/2025 20:55

Doesn’t matter whether anyone “wouldn’t like that food either”.
whether you like it or not, it’s really fucking rude to pull faces and comment on food that someone has kindly provided for you. She wants to teach her children some manners (and get some herself while she’s at it!).

My thoughts exactly.
Both the mother and her DC were ill mannered.
The mother should have immediately pulled her DC up on his rudeness and ingratitude.
OP your buffet was perfectly acceptable and its intention was to feed people.
They were most ungrateful and the DC will have to learn some manners, although the mother may think her DC reaction was just fine.

Stressmode · 28/04/2025 21:41

You are going to have to ask her (and report back!) seeing how Iceland Party food is superior to McDonalds.

JudithOnHolidayAgain · 28/04/2025 20:49

They were rude......but I wouldn't want Iceland party food either.

Iceland party food is really good.

Most people who slag off Iceland food, have never even tried it. But just turn their nose up at it anyway.

chattyness · 28/04/2025 21:40

They were mean spirited OP, ok if they didn't want to eat it then fine, but actually pulling a face and saying they'd go to McDonald's on the way home was rude. They could have just kept quiet.
I would have loved all that, I can eat healthy any other time, sometimes it nice to eat easy & fun food for a change.

BCBird · 28/04/2025 21:39

How rude of your friend. Nothing wrong with Iceland stuff. You didn't invite them to a dinner part- what was she expecting ?

Quitelikeit · 28/04/2025 21:39

Its tricky - if it was me I would have tried one or two items to be polite only

Someone I go to regularly does Aldi frozen food and I have one mini spring roll!

Personally if I’m hosting I like to order Morrisons party food. Sandwich platters/meats/cheeses/chutney/crudites/dips/quiche/pizza

Really doesn’t cost much

However if money was tight I would have just made pasta with a sauce and some garlic bread

Some folk love a beige buffet and some don’t

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 28/04/2025 21:38

Very rude. If they’re that fussy they should have instigated a discussion about beforehand.

StMarie4me · 28/04/2025 21:38

The snobbery and snootiness as well as out of date jibes on MN never cease to amaze me.

Schoolchoicesucks · 28/04/2025 21:37

Yeah, she and her DC were both rude. Still, you know now not to host them again.

Firefightress1 · 28/04/2025 21:37

Food is so expensive now, I would be very grateful for anything provided and the invite. The people with an opinion can do the inviting and hosting if they are that fussed about it.

Crazyworldmum · 28/04/2025 21:37

She was rude. But I can see her perspective as in reason for not eating , not being rude as I would never just host anyone with just Iceland party food bits , they are bad !!

StMarie4me · 28/04/2025 21:36

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 28/04/2025 20:49

If it's good enough for Kerry Katona it should be good enough for everyone.

Good grief she’s not had anything to do with their advertising for years!

CremeEggThief · 28/04/2025 21:32

Lol at all the smug posters falling all over themselves to tell you how they would have done it so much better as well, OP. Smile, nod and ignore!

My favourite was the one who talked about “shining as a hostess”, but the cheese and pineapple lady is runner up. Hyacinth Bucket is out in force tonight!

And all the people suggesting their own menus. This place makes me howl.

Regardless of the food served, the basic rules of hospitality dictate that you don’t act like a nob about it.

Poppyseeds79 · 28/04/2025 21:36

Bloody hell! You'd think you were hosting Master Chef OP. Not a picky tea buffet for kids and adults from some of these comments!🤣

Nothing wrong with some frozen stuff from Iceland! I doubt Gordon Ramsay was popping round to sample it and review.

User8375159534 · 28/04/2025 21:36

Tbh I wouldn't host with Iceland food but I'm pretty sure my parents would. Maybe hide the wrappers next time!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 28/04/2025 21:35

Your friend has no manners. But I’m really curious as to what her version of ‘party food’ is. Too late to ask her…?

JackieDaytonaLuckyBrews · 28/04/2025 21:35

That's unbelievably rude.
If you don't like it, you don't eat it. You don't openly pull faces and make snide comments. Would be the last time they were invited to mine. You can't be snobby about Iceland party food and then trot off to Maccys like it's better 😂
