To think we could close some roads for one hour a week?

To let people who want to get fit by cycling or families with younger children, cycle in safety. I think it would also build community cohesion.
Obviously there would have to be concessions for emergency vehicles?

Am I mad?

My council can’t even empty bins each week.

They are not going to be controlling anyone’s movement

Your argument assumes there is somebody in local or central Government who knows what they are doing.

I can assure you there isn’t.

Basically we are on a ship of fools without a captain.

If we were in somewhere like the China I’d agree with you.

But they already do. School streets, ltns..
Fines if you don't have the right permit. It can't happen overnight..there would be riots on the streets so it creeps in very very slowly. It's started.

Have a think...do we ever get given more freedoms or less?

BeyondMyWits · 27/04/2025 17:20

Trouble is you can't change delivery schedules... or carer availability.

Our cul-de-sac tried closing for 3 hours for the jubilee... caused a lot of bad will...

carers trying to take equipment in and out to 2 houses, cleaner to one, tesco delivery for 1 amazon for 2, evri for another,

the only residents cars trying to return were the one family who had been away on a long haul trip and wanted to get home to unpack, and the on call computer manager -DH -who had been fixing a system for 7 hours and wanted to get home, take his diagnostic kit in out of the car.

That was 3 planned hours on a weekend - 14 houses.

Won't happen again.

Because this is not just about your idea is it? It's a whole movement which is dressed up as a green initiative but is actually a way for governments and councils to control our movements. It's might seem benign now but the end result if this nonsense continues is actually really sinister.

86% of voters think AIBU.
I'm a bit surprised really.
I guess the car is still king.

Probably because Sunday isn't a day of rest in the same way it was. I work Sundays. Today at work there was a market for people to buy second hand baby goods, we always have baby swimming, kids football etc. Lots of people shop on Sunday.

It would suit me more if the hour was between 5 and 6pm on a Friday night. Would that suit you?

We live in a 24 hour society now and anything like this would disrupt someone.

We closed off lots of roads today in London for the Marathon.

It was fine

It was a suggestion, that's all, there's really no need to be rude.

I actually can't stand driving and would happily sell my car tomorrow if I could.

But I need my car in order to do my job, and DH is the same. Neither of us can do our jobs on public transport (even if it did exist here), so it's not so much that "car as king" as opposed to "cars are a necessity for us to pay our bills".

As I said earlier - a noisy minority try and get the rest of us to do what they want.

No, I asked for others views. That's all.

I see a lot of people have drunk the kool aid....no wonder the councils get away with so much shit.

Look forward to your pathetic fifteen minute zones where you get fined for daring to step out of your area...

It's the drip drip effect... unbelievable

In Paris they close of roads for a whole day each month.

I think a day makes more sense sense than an hour

God, I can't see the car drivers of the UK going without their car for a while day.

Where we used to live, you could access one of local school playgrounds at weekends to do things like cycling safely.

Maybe something like that would be better?

Langdale3 · 27/04/2025 17:01

Sunday mornings are a good time. I think it’s a good idea.

Benvenuto · 27/04/2025 16:59

YANBU

Your Council meeting might have a scheme already - worth checking their website.

Playing Out has been mentioned - they have loads of advice. From memory people are allowed to drive in if they want to access the streets so it doesn't really inconvenience residents.

We did some unofficial playing out years ago because our council didn't have a good scheme. It was lovely for the DC & our older neighbours enjoyed the social side too. It does need to someone to organise it though.

It's much easier for DC who live in a cul-de-sac or near a green space etc to play out, so I don't think it's unreasonable for DC who live on older streets to have some time at the weekend etc to do the same.

If you don't have a scheme you could complain to councillors as I don't understand why there aren't standard schemes for this & school streets drawing on best practice from councils who do this successfully. (However, I have complained & got nowhere).

Unless the deterrent is a fine, then very very few people will comply... people just want to come and go as they please.

And yes it does cause more traffic... ltns have caused havoc in my area despite the right on brigade claiming they haven't

How do you know that people wouldn't join in? It might be good to trial it? People might actually like it.

Obviously there would need to be access exemptions for residents.

Which makes it all a bit pointless, really.

Maybe we should be campaigning for permanent car-free roads in all towns instead of trying to shut random roads at random times.

StScholastica · 27/04/2025 16:57

TheCurious0range · 27/04/2025 16:55

So if my road is closed and I need to get to work, an event, church, how do I get out? Urban design should have more play areas and communal spaces yes, but not on roads. I find actually the more rural you are there is often less accessible green space than in suburban areas (lots of farm land and windy country lanes without pavements to be same to get to the public green spaces without a car)

There would be no ban, you could still go out to anything you considered necessary. Just an informal arrangement to let families enjoy cycling.

I don't think it would actually.
I think a lot of people might join in, or decide to go out and hour earlier or later than planned.

  1. Loads of areas have no cycle lanes whatsoever.
  1. Loads of areas are miles from a large park to cycle in.... how are people supposed to get there?
  1. If you live in smaller towns or villagesoften there are no large parks suitable for cycling at all (because you live in the country right?) But the roads are completely full of horrendous pot holes :(
This is a big issue where i live.your choices are 1) large or dual carriageway A road (not safe for cycling with kids) 2) local road with approx 1 million giant potholes which the council do crap patch jobs on, infrequently

I'd love cycle lanes

Yes, I think quite a lot of replies are rather ‘I’m all right, Jack’ .

StScholastica · 27/04/2025 16:55

Comedycook · 27/04/2025 16:51

It would cause more traffic on surrounding roads as people take alternative routes

It's not too tricky to understand.

I don't think it would actually.

So fed up of do gooders trying to make people's lives as difficult as possible. Go live in your own fifteen minute village where the government watches your every move and fines you at will...
