You are given the power to make three things illegal. What would you choose?

I know people will post silly things that irritate them but think seriously. What three things would you make completely illegal right now?
Here's mine:

  1. The right to buy your council house
  2. Owning more than one property.
  3. Not keeping your cat contained in your own home. With hefty fines if it is caught killing any wildlife.
OP posts:

  1. Motorbikes. I hate, and loathe motorbikes.
  2. Dogs in cafes and on transport (bar Guide Dogs of course)
  3. Very very loud speakers who practically shout and scream and you can hear them the next suburb over. One man in our local town talks at top volume (not drunk, nothing wrong with him, he just talks very, very loudly) and you can hear him from one end of the supermarket to other end.

I think that the OP is right and cats will eventually have to be kept inside. We're learning more about ecosystems all the time. 15 years ago nobody would have predicted that we'd have no mow May.
Mine things that should be illegal are:

  1. Vapes
  2. Owning a huge vehicle without a need for one
  3. Sheep grazing on higher ground.
outlanderish · 27/04/2025 09:31
  1. If should be illegal to claim benefits if you are fully capable to work but never worked a day in your life. You should be prosecuted immediately, it's too soft now.
  2. Illegal to have children if you cannot physically afford to have them, support them or look after them. There's too many children growing up in poverty and care.
  3. The cost of houses should be illegal. It's literally brick and mortar. There should be a set cost per m2.

Building new homes/housing estates that don't comply/have the following:

Solar Panels
Those super eco boilers
Shutters on windows
Basically making sure new homes have all the things that will help prepare new properties for climate change, extreme heat, flooding, etc. And as eco-friendly as possible.

For a certain number of houses/people, they also need to provide amenities such as new schools, doctors, shops, etc. So that current ones don't get overwhelmed/oversubscribed

And if it's a two bedroom for example not giving the main bedroom an ensuite and as a result having the 2nd room be a tiny box! Why does a 2 bed need an ensuite???

270 million small animals and birds killed by pet cats in the UK. Some states in Australia have banned them from being allowed out. Pet cats exist in a density that would never occur naturally. There are many people who would support a ban on free roaming cats.

Source?
Time period?

TheHerboriste · 27/04/2025 09:30
  1. Roaming cats
  2. Pesticides of any sort
  3. Out of wedlock childbearing

You are wrong. Crocs are fabulous garden shoes.

Fair enough - crocs only in their natural habitat. Like cats

I love seeing people get irate about daft things that will NEVER change. Cats will always be allowed outside. So keep being bothered about it OP, keep releasing that cortisol into your body over pointless stuff and see where it gets you in life..

If number three was law I wouldn’t have cats, it would be cruel to keep them cooped up. Having been in a pub this week where a dog was sitting on a cushioned chair and drinking from a half-pint glass (held by owner in case you’re conjuring up some cartoon image!) I know which side I’m on. So, OP, I know you asked us to be serious but because you set the bar I’m going to go with the first thing that sprang to mind when I read you’re title…

  1. properties in the UK can only be bought by British citizens or companies wholly owned and registered in the UK (not subsidiaries of overseas companies)
  2. companies cannot be bought by loading them with debt - they can only be bought by purchasing shares with external debt
  3. key industries like energy, water, steel, coal, food production (including farming) cannot be owned by foreign companies (in fact renationalise energy and water; and make sewage discharges into the environment illegal with it)
Edited

completely agree with all of these - we should not be outsourcing our assets

Litter louts to be publicly flogged (I hate them with every inch of my being).

Forgot to include this in mine! Along with spitting! It's absolutely vile, I'm sick of pavement gymnastics to avoid blobs of other peoples mucus.

helloquitty · 27/04/2025 09:26
  1. dogs off leads in public places
  2. refusal to give a person a mortgage
  3. To charge extra for holidays in school holidays

Lifetime council tenancy. MIL has one, moved in with 3 kids in the early 90s, Huge 3 bed house. Now it's just her, pays a ridiculous amount in bedroom tax but they can't move her to a smaller one bed property even though she often says she can't manage such a large house anymore due to health conditions.

Leaving dogs at home alone all day whilst owners go off to work. I don't care if you have a dog walker come in a couple times a day, don't have a dog if you can't provide it with basic care. You get a dog for companionship and then leave it alone for 8+ hours a day, why?

Plastic bags and unnecessary plastic packaging. Start with the companies, perhaps a plastic tax on every item packaged in plastic.

Smartphones and social media for under 18s. There's no need for children/teenagers to have anything other than a basic £40 phone that calls/texts.

I'll probably get some hate for this one but SAHP once your children are of school age. Completely normal when kids are little but once they start school, get a job.

caramac04 · 27/04/2025 09:25

Misogynistic porn (is that all porn? Genuine question as I’ve never watched any)

Social Media for under 16 years of age

Second homes especially starter size homes as this disrupts the market. (Some BTL and HMO’s can do this too.

Not sure about this. Dogs used to be allowed to roam when I was a child. There was no compulsory microchipping. Unwanted kittens and puppies were drowned in a bucket rather than spaying/neutering. It was normal to keep pet birds in tiny cages.....stuff does change.

adviceneeded1990 · 27/04/2025 09:23
  1. Smart phones for under 16s
  2. Porn
  3. The postcode lottery for fertility treatment - everyone should have access to NHS IVF as many times as they need.
EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/04/2025 09:23

But you also think people should be allowed to own as many homes as they can afford. Whilst there is a housing crisis and the population is ever-increasing.
Okay, good point.
We'll cap it at two.

FlakyCritic · 27/04/2025 09:23

YABU with 1 and 3. My parents would never have been able to own their own home if they couldn't have paid it off through the council.

And cats hunt, that's nature. Birds hunt too. So does everything. It's the circle of life. I agree with keeping cats confided to your property though.

wildlifeobserver1 · 27/04/2025 09:23

Having children irresponsibly - I.e. bringing them into a life of poverty and substandard conditions.

Runssometimes · 27/04/2025 09:23
  1. smoking and vapes
  2. private cars in urban/high density areas unless owned and used by people with mobility issues. Would allow car share schemes and taxis.
  3. using phones or any device with sound on without headphones.
