Lovely smelling homes

How do some homes smell so nice! Sort of across between clean laundry and freshly baked cakes?! I hate anything scented so don't like buying diffusers etc. We do washing several times a week and our home never smells like this!

I'd love a nice scented reed diffuser, the ones I buy are usually awful - either too strong or too chemically.

Or you can’t even tell there’s one in the room, as they smell of nothing!

Opening windows is the best way to get rid of smells/freshen things up. Our windows get opened every day, even open them in winter for half an hour just to let the air circulate. ATM our house is like a wind tunnel. Also turn the covers back on the bed to let it air out.

Blarn · 27/04/2025 12:12

Fresh air. I open windows regularly. I do have a couple of nice candles but I use them to enjoy the scent rather than make my house smell nice if that makes sense.

We are unfortunately though living in a house with no kitchen extraction and that makes a massive difference. I regularly wash the aprons that are hung up and wipe down cupboards but everything gets greasy and I think it smells of old grease. I always have the door and window open when I cook and keep the door to the hallway closed to stop the smells going through the house.

Justfreedom · 27/04/2025 11:51

My home smells lovely all the time.
I dont know if its because i live alone or the fact i never close my windows.
I do have a plug in in the hall way.

CautiousLurker01 · 27/04/2025 11:15

Agree with many PPs here = we have 2 dogs and I’ve firmly instructed friends to tell me if I’ve become noseblind, but even my (new) cleaner comments on how clean and fresh the house smells!

  • hardwood floors (only have carpets in the bedrooms and upper hallway)
  • hoover/wash floors regularly
  • wash the dog bedding regularly as well as the blankets we use on the sofas
  • open windows and back doors regularly to blow the stale air through
  • diffusers in bedrooms and also like the 3volution plug ins as the scent rotates
  • have those clip-on rim toilet cleaners that clean the loo when flushed but also release a general scent of lemon or mango (new scent)
  • bedding changed weekly (we have identical bedding on all the beds and a second set so can be changed easily and ‘old bedding washed at leisure
  • kitchen bin emptied nightly no matter how full/empty, so no food is decomposing over a few days
  • and often fill the kitchen sink with diluted Zoflora disinfectant and cleans the sink and pipes, but also scents the kitchen for a few hours

Am actually a rather lazy housewife, but most of these things take 5-10mins a day other than the bedding change, but I get the kids (older teens) to do theirs.

I have 3 indoor cats and people say this about my home!

I vacuum and mop every day. I make sure to wipe all surfaces at least once a week, I find dust holds smells... But that may be in my head.

I have a Lampe Berger with the scentless liquid. It genuinely eliminates smells rather than covering them like horrible air freshener. I light it in the morning for 30 mins and after cooking dinner for 30 mins.

I buy sofas from IKEA that I can take the covers off of and wash. I do this quarterly.

I wash all bedding weekly and air out the duvet and pillows. I also use mattress protectors I can machine wash so the mattress stays fresh.

I air out the house for at least an hour, even in winter.

I make sure I clean the extractor fan and change the filter or the smell of old oil can linger.

I wash all kitchen cloths every few days. I don't think people realise how musty and horrible they can get (my mum).

I also make sure the cats have their teeth cleaned and don't have any plaque build up. Pet breath can really smell.

TimeForABreak4 · 27/04/2025 11:05

My neighbour walked in to my house yesterday and said it smells amazing in here. I had the tumble drier on and use the lenor gold orchid scent boosters and had just steam mopped the floors (which I do every day) and put a few drop of Astonish pink roses disinfectant in. Also buy the pomegranate aldi candles and have one in the hall and lounge just with the lid off and can smell them even when not lit.

Imgoingtobefree · 27/04/2025 10:59

I think one way is not to let bad smells accumulate. So pets, cooking smells need good extraction and ventilation.

Open windows and keeping things clean and refreshed is the best way, but not everyone has time for steam cleaning rugs, sofa covers, cushions and curtains.

Im not mad on artificial fragrances, but I’ve read that spraying vodka in the room helps. I think you’re meant to add in a few drops of your favourite essence though!!

I used to sometimes spray diluted fabric conditioner on my kitchen textiles for both pets and cooking smells.

RosaMoline · 27/04/2025 10:58

I regularly use these. I have had loads of compliments, and people I know have bought it after being in my house. I even had to give my Sainsburys delivery driver the details!

i open windows, dont have any pets atm. Have those air wick air fresher things which work off a battery and automatically spray often, i also hoover often and spray carpets with that foam spray which smells nice

faerietales · 27/04/2025 10:41

I've been told a few times our home smells really nice.

We open the windows and air the house for at least an hour a day, often 24-7 in the warmer months. We have two open now, for example.
I vacuum and mop the floors daily.
We have blankets on our sofas that are washed at least once a week.
We have a wax burner and burn scented soy melts constantly when we're at home and awake.
Beds are changed every week with fresh linen.
No damp clothes lying about - we either line-dry or use the tumble dryer.
We don't use fabric conditioner - just supermarket own brand non-bio washing liquid.
Toilet is cleaned twice a day and we have nice-scented cleaning sprays that we use in the bathroom and kitchen everyday.

We have three cats and a dog, but no DC. Litter trays are emptied regularly and no pet food is left lying around. All the dirty dog towels and bedding etc. are washed regularly so nothing is left sat around.

mamaduckbone · 27/04/2025 10:34

Don't have teenagers?
Honestly, mine has just got up and the fug that has drifted out of his room is breathtaking (not in a good way)

MrsPositivity1 · 27/04/2025 10:33

— Open windows
— make sure your mop head doesn’t stink
— toilets flushed (houses with boys)
— scandiscent electric diffuser
— make sure extractor fan on when cooking on hob

MrsMappFlint · 27/04/2025 10:32

Are electric diffusers any good? Do they make condensation worse?

Keirawr · 27/04/2025 10:25

Keeping it clean, avoiding pets especially dogs, and opening windows when cooking.

TheSandgroper · 27/04/2025 10:18

Well, if you never open your windows, your house will not smell nice, that’s for sure.

Open windows every day. When I lived in England, even on the cold days, I would walk around our (teeny) house and open every window, count to ten then go and close them all. All the air got exchanged and it just felt fresh.

Your washing should be dried outside as much as possible and dried properly.

If a room is particularly funky, strip the bed and wash everything, get quilts, blankets, pillows and soft toys outside and stand your mattress up with the window open. The weather needs to be dry, not necessarily warm. Cold, clear weather will do just as well. If you think that’s not enough, open the wardrobe and drawers to air as well.

I regularly get our pillows and quilts outside, even the sheepskin mattress cover. Shake and bash. You will be horrified at the crud thwt flies out.

Work around the house, one room at a time and get it clean and fresh. By the end of summer, you won’t know yourself.

One3C · 27/04/2025 10:10

I burn sandalwood incense. The fragrance lasts for hours especially for the porch which I can't leave open.

FaceOrf · 27/04/2025 07:35

Use a diffuser with essential oils. I love lime oil and there’s nothing synthetic about it.

Koolforkats · 27/04/2025 07:17

Few drops of vanilla essence on a baking tray in warm oven (after you’ve switched it off but it’s cooling down).

ToysRus56 · 27/04/2025 07:14

Ive woken up to this hive of absolute gems!! We never purposefully open our windows so this will definitely help. I feel I clean all the time but I don't tend to clean rugs that sort of thing...I did once buy a reed defuser but it was just horrible - it was a pretty nice one which I hid in a corner in the hall but that precise corner ended up smelling like a teenage boy about to go on a date and had just discovered deodorant. Not exactly subtle. Interesting, would never occur to me to wash coats or cushions covers. We went into a friend's home yesterday and it just smelt wonderful. I even peaked to see if I could see what washing detergent they were using 😂 I don't think our home smells bad, just not like that

Purdey and Figg cleaning products
Valentte wax burners (I hide them but they smell great) plus Valentte room sprays
M&S apocothrapy calm reed diffusers
lots of fresh air

violetcuriosity · 27/04/2025 03:35

People always walk in and say my house smells nice, I don’t do anything particularly special. Some of the things I do that might help- Bleach toilets regularly, zoflora diluted with water when I mop the floors, occasionally dry clothes on the airer inside/on radiators, cook any heavy scented food with the windows open, windows and back door open as often as possible, at least once a day. I never use plug ins or candles/diffusers because my partner thinks they’re toxic x

HiRen · 27/04/2025 03:09

Clean everything: carpets, curtains, sofas, cushions, bedding. Everything washed regularly and replaced when necessary. Housework kept on top of. Laundry not piling up. Cooking smells banished. Buns emptied. And yes windows open as much as possible.
