The utter despair of losing something

I realised I had misplaced brand new expensive sunglasses today, around mid morning, I just thought I hadn’t seen them in a while, so checked the last place I remember having them (the car).

DH almost 100% I brought them un as we know not to leave anything in the car.

When we arrived at a soft play (of all places) I took them off and left in central reservation of car as I didn’t want to take them in. That was 10 days ago, I just knew they weren’t in the house as I’d have seen them. I have a couple pairs and just got stuck on the other pair recently, as you do.

I don’t understand it at all. It’s ruined the entire day. Taken over. I can’t stop wondering where they have gone.

anyone else get obsessive like this?

Yeah, it's bad enough when you're the one who lost it. Whatever "it" was. Now imagine it's your partner losing all your shit for you and that's my existence.

He lost my bag of brand new Sharpies set before I'd even used them twice. £25 worth, just fucking gone. We've only got a small flat.

He likes to "tidy".

What this means in practice is everything of mine being tossed in random boxes, drawers, tubs and bags...never to be seen until six months after they've been re-fucking-purchased.
I swear to the almighty himself, I'm going to make him fucking eat them when he finally goes, "ohhhh, there they was. What they doin in there then?".

He's like the old woman garbage dump goblin in Labyrinth.

Seriously though. It's extremely stressful to live with someone so utterly forgetful and thoughtless. He always denies he's touched the lost item. There's only the two of us here, no visitors, and I am not forgetful in the slightest about where I've put things.

When I moved I lost all of my certificates- from GCSE to Present day. I pulled every file out of the book case but they were nowhere to be found. I was feeling panicky at this stage as the thought of trying to replace them all filled me with dread. I said a prayer to St Anthony several times. Went back over to the bookcase and they were the first thing I put my hands upon. Worth a try!

middler · 27/04/2025 06:12

Bummer.

Broke a 60 quid mug this morning, bought in December, used and loved daily, and feel sick and stupid for breaking it...it happens. It's why I tend not to buy too many expensive things I can break or lose.

BigHeadBertha · 27/04/2025 06:08

I thought I left my beloved and expensive sunglasses at a gas station when my husband and I were on a road trip. By the time I realized it, we were already far from the gas station and I didn't want to go back. I really love those sunglasses but I kept telling myself that maybe some lady who didn't have much money would find them and recognize the brand and it would just make her day. That made me feel a little better but then I realized I was sitting on them the whole time. Stuff is not what's important in life, right? (That's another thing I tell myself when I lose something). :)

RickiRaccoon · 27/04/2025 06:04

Yes, it annoys me to the extent that I don't buy expensive things. It's annoying when you lose anything new but more so when it's expensive. I often buy cheaper stuff just so I don't feel so bad when things get lost or broken.

I lost my expensive prescription sunglasses a few years back, Finally accepted they were gone (after a good few weeks of retracing my steps and turning the house upside down) and paid for a new pair.

The original glasses eventually materialised a year later when we were doing a clear-out - at the back of the wardrobe inside some rarely worn boots. Aaaaaaargh.

Last year, we went on holiday for 2 weeks and I can still see a necklace I decided to leave behind last minute - in a little pouch on top of my drawers. A friend made it for me and it’s v lovely and special.

When we got home, the pouch and necklace were gone. Three people had been in the house - the cleaner (who has worked for us for many years, completely trustworthy), a lovely friend feeding the cat, and a second lovely friend who fed the cat for a few days when the other one couldn’t. I couldn’t imagine any of them stealing anything!

I’ve hunted high and low for that necklace and I’m driven MAD wondering what happened to it!

Soonenough · 27/04/2025 05:49

I still mourn the loss of a Kindle as I was going on holiday to Portugal many years ago. It was loaded with hundreds of books . Made police reports and checked regularly with airline.

I reckon they’re in your car but because they’re black. You need to do a few emergency stops for them to slide out from somewhere, or at least rattle.

I think this too. OP,I know you said you moved the car seats forward, you need to move them right back too, get down and shine a torch under the seats to really, really check.

In the past year, I have lost expensive sunglasses and a lovely umbrella which was storm proof, dried really quickly and was lightweight. I did not notice either item was missing until I wanted to use it and couldn't find it.

Was convinced for over three years that a packer had pocketed my grandmother’s engagement ring during a house move. Eventually came across it – in what I literally call “the treasure drawer” – when I decided to dig out an old T-shirt

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 27/04/2025 05:32

my theory is I left them in the car and I live in London, so we left car unlocked for a second and someone pinched them (happens a lot here)

Jeez, which area of London do you live? I live in a 'edgy area' yet have never hasd this happen, nor do I know of anyone that it has happpened to. Someone would have to be watching you arrive, assess how long you might be away from the car, then search randomly through your love box in case you've stashed something valuable in there, all the while keeping an eye out for you coming back.
Yeah, it's crimesville here in London. They steal the breath out of your mouth if you don't lock it

Ozgirl76 · 27/04/2025 04:57

We had been for a day out at the Arundel Wildfowl trust a few years ago with my parents as well. When we got home my mum messaged and said they’d gone back because my dad couldn’t find his wedding ring. He had lost some weight and wondered if it had slipped off.
Anyway, it wasn’t there, he couldn’t find it anywhere, turned the house upside down.

About two years later he had a flat tyre and was changing it for the spare, and THERE, in the well of the car, underneath the boot, was his wedding ring! He reckons it fell off in a pocket and then when he put his coat in the car it had slipped down.

He was unbelievably pleased.

I hope your sunglasses have ended up somewhere suitably odd as well.

Lostsadandconfused · 27/04/2025 04:50

I’ve just realised the gold diamond and opal bracelet my boyfriend gave me for my birthday isn’t on my wrist.

I’ve been searching the house.

I haven’t taken it off since he gave it to me last September.

I’m heartbroken.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 27/04/2025 04:46

I left my favourite silk scarf in a Burger King. I’d had it 20 years. I knew where I’d left it. Went back the next day and asked about it and it was so frustrating, the person on the counter just stood there looking completely blank at me when I was trying to get her to understand how important it was to me. That was about 10 years ago and I still miss it. I loved that scarf.

TouchtheEarth · 27/04/2025 03:39

Yes I used to be that way, once. It didn't help that one of my best friends was a kleptomaniac either.
But that was long before I learned that all 'things' can be replaced and when you start to lose living beings from your life then you really know the meaning of loss.

LillyPJ · 27/04/2025 03:37

@Barney16 I think you should start a career as a Super Finder!

LillyPJ · 27/04/2025 03:34

I get annoyed with myself when I lose things because I think I try really hard not to. It's not about the cost (I don't have expensive things) - I just hate that I'm not as organised as I'd like to be.

Monty27 · 27/04/2025 03:33

@kindnessforthewin I seriously get anxious if I can't put my hand on something immediately. Seriously stressed. The trouble is I do it so regularly these days I'm afraid to take anything out with me even to the shops. Obviously I have to and when I'm at a till I go into meltdown trying to remember where I put my cards or purse safely.
If I know something has been misplaced, I too pray to St Anthony and it turns up. Then I thank him.
I'm not even religious.

I reckon you left them on the reception desk.

Tbrh · 27/04/2025 03:16

Did you call the softplay place, someone might have handed them in. I found a phone last week which I was very happy to unite with its owner

Here’s another question, when folk have finally found something after looking all over, where was said item?

I tipped up the entire house and then kept a keen eye out for my AirPods. Luckily didn’t buy new ones, just used my old ones and borrowed DH for gym sessions. Months later they turned up in the depths of the glove box. Mind you how have my sunglasses been ‘stolen’ in 3 days and no one found an unlocked car or AirPods Pro in 4 months!

Sunglasses - still can't find them 😡
Ear buds - in one of the zip up pockets of my work bag 🎉
Running watch - in the salad drawer in the fridge 🤭

Barney16 · 27/04/2025 02:46

I'm an excellent finder. It's my superpower. I have always been able to find stuff. Lost things aren't ever where you think they are, you just convince yourself they are there. The more you think about it the more certain it seems. I firmly believe things we use a lot become almost invisible, we are so used to them although tiny things are a particular challenge. Stop thinking about whatever you are looking for for a bit, then have another go.

notanothernamechange24 · 27/04/2025 02:27

It’s so annoying isn’t it! I’ve. Lost a charging cable for something I need to sell. Haven’t used said item for over two years hence wanting to sell it. Tore house apart trying to find it but it’s gone!

BoxOfCats · 27/04/2025 01:57

What's even worse is grieving the said lost item for months, spending a fortune replacing it, only to the find the lost item a week later.

This is how I have two identical gold necklaces!

CigarettesAndLoveBites · 27/04/2025 01:57

I lost my lovely Radley card holder containing 2 bank cards and 2 supermarket loyalty cards a few days ago. I retraced my steps but it was nowhere to be found. Cancelled the cards a few hours later - fortunately they hadn't been used. It's been a proper hassle to get the cards reissued, it will take 7 working days so no spending for me this week. But I'm really sad about the card holder. I've had it for years, I treated myself with a John Lewis voucher when I saw it in the sale at a time I was really skint. I keep thinking about it sitting on a wall waiting for me to come back to find it...

Lobsterteapot · 27/04/2025 01:53

I spent ten minutes furiously looking for my phone last week and found it later in my bra 🙈 (I was wearing a jumper, hoody and a coat)
