Dating 13 years younger

Female almost 53 dating a 40 year old man. Both have a 10 year old DD. Could it work long term with the age gap? What do you think? Is it too big an age gap?

Johnny Rotten and his wife had a 14 year age gap with her being the elder and it worked for them.

Judy Goodyear is 20 something years older than her husband and they have been together for years and he's stuck by her now she has dementia.

I’d say at 52 most people think I’m about 45. I’d say he looks 40. He a gym bunny so is very easy on the eye. I also present well I think, and obviously it’s not all about looks but I wouldn’t want people to look at us and think jeez she’s a lot older than him haha

People have a tendency to not being really honest for telling someone how old they look like. I don't know you and it could be indeed true that you look like 45 but I would take with a pinch of salt observations in that regard.

There’s a 12-year age gap between me and my DH. I’m in my late 40s, he’s in his mid-30s. It works really well for us; we share a lot in common, along with some differences, just like any couple.

That said, there are a few things I’ve noticed that grate a little, mostly linked to outdated gender stereotypes. For example, when we’re out together, I’m often asked how old I am. Something that rarely happened in my previous relationship (where my ex was seven years older). To me, it highlights how society views an age gap differently depending on who’s older.

Another small irritation is that I’m the higher earner, and my DH sometimes feels judged by his peers for “not pulling his weight” even though, for us, finances are a complete non-issue.

I guess what I’m saying is: be prepared for a little judgment from others, and ride it out if the relationship is worth it!

Older woman/younger man can work out - like any relationship it all just depends.

Some time back I posted on a thread about someone who was asking about a relationship with an overseas guy and a 14 year gap. I knew someone, aged 40, who married a man from a similar country, same age gap - so a cultural and age gap.

They were very happily married for nearly 40 years until she died aged around 80 a couple of years ago.

Runningoutofpatiencefucksandmoney · 26/04/2025 11:10

My ex DP was 12 years younger than me, and it worked for 6 years. We split at the end of last year, but not because of any age gaps/difference in lifestyle.

BatchCookBabe · 26/04/2025 11:04

I thought you were going to say you are 32 and he's 19 or something, (I know a woman right now who is 34, and has a 19 year old boyfriend, and it makes me nauseous, because he looks like her son. 😖 And it's a bit icky and grimy.)

But 40 and 53 is OK. Not sure how it will pan out long term, and I believe the age gap will be way more apparent when you're 62 and he's 49. But enjoy it for what it is for now.

Despite you thinking you look younger @MondeoFan like most people, you will look fairly close to your age in reality... And once you hit menopause, you will age 10 years in 3-4 years. So be prepared for people thinking you're his mother, because in 3-4 years, he will only be in his early to mid 40s, and you'll be in your mid to late 50s (and as I say, menopause will age you, and he will look much younger than you then.)

@LuvACustardCreamand this exactly my thoughts thinking about being 60 and 73 or 70 and 83

LuvACustardCream · 26/04/2025 11:01

OK now, but 60 and 73? I dated someone 8 years older than me and finished it because of the age gap. I just didn't like what the future looked like.

Blackdow · 26/04/2025 11:00

My boyfriend is 9 years older than me, and we are great together. But I do sometimes get a little worry that he will be “old” before I am. Right now, I’m 35 and he is 44 and it’s fine. But, I don’t know, I worry a little about when I’m 61 and he is 70. Anything could happen to either of us, but if nothing does and we just grow older together then I do worry that he’ll be an old man before I’m quite ready to be an old woman! But I love him, 9 years really isn’t that much, so I’m going with it.

Shoppingtoday · 26/04/2025 10:59

A ten year age gap is max for me but I don’t think it’s ’grim.’

I went out with someone ten years older once but he was a bit old-fashioned so the gap was noticeable.

LlynTegid · 26/04/2025 10:55

I've known couples with similar age gaps where it has worked and from the outside at least, seemed a long and happy marriage.

Almostwelsh · 26/04/2025 10:49

Chiseltip · 26/04/2025 08:59

Because a 47 year old man is not going to have sex with a 60 year old.

You'd be surprised

George Clooney.

What about him? Famous good looking older man isn’t the same as typical men. And plenty of older hollywood actresses sleeping with younger men.

Lurkingandlearning · 26/04/2025 10:21

As OP have said it can work but I think that little voice in your head that wonders why he wouldn’t want to be with someone his own age will get more intrusive as you get older. you’ll have to really beef up your self esteem so that those worries don’t cause a problem in themselves. Even if you didn’t tell him about any increasing doubts you had, unless you’re a remarkable actress, they would show.

Chiseltip · 26/04/2025 09:37

QueefQueen80s · 26/04/2025 09:11

And what about vice versa?

ThisIsItNowOrNever · 25/04/2025 22:43

Yuck, that is a grim.

How rude!!!

Bikergran · 26/04/2025 08:58

My mother was 15 years older than my dad. They were devoted. And I think it kept her young.

QueefQueen80s · 26/04/2025 08:08

Never been a fan of age gaps but many men are never going to stop going younger so why not start to equalise it a bit. I see more older women with younger men these days, and now I’m mid 40s I get more attention from men in their 20s and 30s.

MoominMai · 26/04/2025 07:54

ThisIsItNowOrNever · 25/04/2025 22:43

How old are you lmfao? Another one just hysterically throwing the buzz word ‘grim’ around 😂

Yuck, that is a grim.

Why is it grim? My husband is 13 years older than me and we've been together for years. I've never considered it to be grim.

NewPinkJacket · 25/04/2025 23:29

MondeoFan · 25/04/2025 22:45

Well I am going through my menopause but def not going off sex. I kinda worry what he sees in me when he could meet someone his own age. I do normally prefer younger men as men my age don’t always look after themselves

But he'll be your age one day, so presumably you'll think he doesn't 'look after' himself?
