To dare to think that the Cult of Dog has gone too far?

There is now not a single public space in my home town that is dog-free - and that includes cafes, restaurants and even the library. Local beaches, once a quiet escape, have turned into asylums for the fur baby/pupper brigade to inflict their poorly trained animals on others with children getting chased, people jumped on and tripped over and all to the sound of hysterical barking and frequent dog fights.
80 year old woman knocked over by uncontrollable dog? 'You got in his way'.
Ask politely that you take your dog away from our lunch table? 'Go fuck yourself'.
Sit on the most remote bench you can find? Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan lets loose 3 dogs from her 4x4 to jump all over you and laughs that it's 'their spot' and turns unhinged when you push them away.
Yes, this is a rant and yes I hate most dog owners.
This weird cult that values darling dogs over human beings is actually pretty worrying.
I shall await the inevitable and hilarious 'incoming' from the emotionally stunted Doggo Nutters.

@FundingIssue they are misanthropes. BIL/ partner is the same. “Prefers dogs to people” and funnily enough has fallen out with every friend she has ever had.

The lack of self-awareness is amusing!

BinLordSeverustheMagnificent · 17/05/2025 07:35

Agreed. It totally off the scale now.

One of our offices at work now permits people to bring in their dog. It’s totally fucking ridiculous.

Feetinthegrass · 17/05/2025 07:22

I love dogs, but I agree op.

FundingIssue · 17/05/2025 06:44

I always wonder what kind of people the ‘I prefer dogs to humans’ brigade are. Do they lack social skills? Do they know that they are humans too? If so, why do they dislike themselves so much? Are their family and friends (if they have any) all so objectionable that they prefer to hang around with canines instead?

It’s quite a sad state of affairs for them, and they must be quite isolated in society really, and lonely.

Game on 😆 🤣 😂 😹

Honestly, imagine what they could have achieved if they’d put the same energy into trying to resolve their (made up) issues as they do banging on about it on here!

Who cares? I can think of a few people I'd have willingly stepped over to save my cat when I had him or my dog if I had one. Building on fire? Sorry BIL, you're a knob and my cat comes first.

😅😅

@Dangermoo

irrelevant. They’ll never have the same rights as humans

You up for petitioning for that with me? At least we’ll be doing more than whinging on MN about things we want to change.

I am surprised the acolytes of the Cult of Dog haven't demanded that the Human Rights Act be extended to cover dogs as well.

Well that's a shame. In some cases, they are deserving of more rights.

Dangermoo · 16/05/2025 12:44

That's very subjective, so it's not simple at all. My two are far more important to me than many humans.

OK but if a dog on an airplane kicked the seat in front. What THEN.

I’d put most dogs before a large amount of MNers to be fair.

Dogs will NEVER be on a par as humans. They are simply not as important.

End stage capitalism. Sainsbury's were selling Easter eggs for cats and dogs that cost more than the one my mum bought my niece. Why do pets need an Easter egg? They have no concept of Easter!

Shock horror, some people might want to have a bit of fun with their pets!

My NDN has mini birthday parties for her dogs. She puts little party hats on them and makes them cakes. Not something I would do, I have no idea when my dog's birthday even is. But it's harmless fun and hurts noone.

Quite.

I'd like to add I don't hate all dogs. There's three I quite like, two are owned by friends of mine and the other is owned by a regular customer of where I used to work. But I am scared of dogs I don't know. I've been bitten in the past and so I just avoid them. It's definitely got worse since I had DS/moved here. I had a lovely chat with a lady with her two dogs a few months ago, who was just very sweet and understanding about me being scared.

(Still think guinea pigs and rats are the best.)

Where I regularly walk our dogs (a country house with land in West Sussex) there is a sign asking owners to flick the dog poo into bushes rather than pick it up. I think it was in preferance to people leaving poo bags in their fields, as they use the fields to make expensive hay that gets sold for animals.

@MariLlwyd I'd be complaining (loudly) to your council about dogs in the library. That's just taking the piss. It's not a business, it's a public building that you're paying for.

My church doesn't allow dogs, there was a bloke that wanted to bring his in. He was told politely to either tie it up outside or leave it at home and he refused, so wasn't allowed in.

I've moved to a town that seems dog mad, they're allowed in nearly all the cafés except Greggs and the one in Tesco, and the only dog free pub is Wetherspoons (which is always packed.) A lot of shops are dog friendly too, so I avoid them. They're also allowed in the local museum. I also hate that so many twats don't put them on leads. I used my umbrella as a shield a while ago when an off lead Alsatian got too close.

Also, there's such a thing as anti dog spray, like pepper spray, but for dogs. Unlike pepper spray it's perfectly legal to carry and use in the UK. There's also devices that make a noise that scares them away.

Did see a video a while ago of a man being told he needs to put his dog on a lead, the dog then ran off and nearly got hit by a car. But I assume that was the driver's fault and not his, as he was shouting at said driver.

...and breathe....

There's a definite link that you're choosing not to see.

Some people can afford to pay for their dogs to eat ice cream. Some people cannot afford to pay for their child's breakfast, let alone ice cream. That is the sign of a dysfunctional economy and society.
