To dare to think that the Cult of Dog has gone too far?

There is now not a single public space in my home town that is dog-free - and that includes cafes, restaurants and even the library. Local beaches, once a quiet escape, have turned into asylums for the fur baby/pupper brigade to inflict their poorly trained animals on others with children getting chased, people jumped on and tripped over and all to the sound of hysterical barking and frequent dog fights.
80 year old woman knocked over by uncontrollable dog? 'You got in his way'.
Ask politely that you take your dog away from our lunch table? 'Go fuck yourself'.
Sit on the most remote bench you can find? Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan lets loose 3 dogs from her 4x4 to jump all over you and laughs that it's 'their spot' and turns unhinged when you push them away.
Yes, this is a rant and yes I hate most dog owners.
This weird cult that values darling dogs over human beings is actually pretty worrying.
I shall await the inevitable and hilarious 'incoming' from the emotionally stunted Doggo Nutters.

I love dogs but only well behaved ones should be welcome in "people spaces". I think dogs are very much animals, very lovable, very affectionate and intelligent, but they are still animals, albeit part of our families and households. They are not babies and need to not be coddled and left to run riot.

there's a thread on here about bringing back dog licences. I'm agreement with that.

Come back, Barbara Woodhouse.

dottiehens · 26/04/2025 23:35

Yes and they are here to stay. More people are going for dogs rather than children. They are just one of those things will never changed back now. Business catering for them is the obvious thing to do.

Pupinskipops · 26/04/2025 23:33

Dog's are fine. Ban the people.

BizzyLizzyandLittleMo · 26/04/2025 23:25

Yup, they even go to church these days by all accounts 🙄

I completely agree why the fuck does everybody need a dog? Particularly people who have a baby too. Isn't it enough to have a baby to care for?

Why did you need another 4 kids after the first one?

MillieMinx · 26/04/2025 23:13

I think the dogs in public places culture has got a bit out of hand in the UK. I noticed that on a visit back recently. We do have places over here in NZ where you can take your dogs but it’s not everywhere. I have two dogs and they will sit quietly while we have a cuppa and mostly sit under the chair or table out of the way. Dogs are losing their true nature due to being pampered and treated like children. They are bored but overwhelmed with expectations to be a cute piece of floof. Dogs need training and boundaries not to be paraded around in stupid outfits or stuck indoors all day. They are animals not humans and need to have their best life as a dog should.

Ferretedaway · 26/04/2025 23:11

Well, both your grandson and the dog have horrid recall

when someone is terrified or phobic, recall doesn’t come into it. It’s a fight and flight reaction.

pigsDOfly · 25/04/2025 12:14

Where on earth do you live that dogs are given such freedom?

All the beaches I know of on the South Coast near where I live have dog free areas during the warmer months and in the small town I live in very few shops, and certainly not the library, allow dogs.

I have a dog, though I'm not a 'Doggo Nutter', nor do I refer to my dog as my 'fur baby'.

And whilst I agree that some dog owners aren't controlling their dogs properly your reference to a 'peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan' is pretty offensive and as pp said your rant does, indeed, sound pretty deranged

Maybe take a few deep breaths OP.

London...it's nuts.

RubyAndSapphire · 26/04/2025 23:03

Absolutely sick of it, it's gotten so much worse in recent years, I feel we're being chased away from enjoying the outside. It's so hard when you have young children who are afraid of dogs and useless dog owners allow their off lead dogs to chase and terrify my children. In my area it is illegal for dogs to be in children's play areas, this is of course completely ignored and on Firday alone I must have counted at least 5 dogs off lead running around in our small village children's play area, it's just so inconsiderate and unfair, and the dog people will hear no negative feedback, completely exhausting!

Dogs and humans are entirely different. Any comparison of dogs and children (or other humans) is completely nuts. They are completely distinct and have a fundamentally different standing and different rights in society.

Whenever I see someone say "well, I prefer my dog to most people" or "dogs are much better than children", I think to myself, that is a very silly person.

It's a bit like saying "I prefer my house to most people" or "lawnmowers are so much more useful than kids" or "I like the robins that sing in my hedge so much more than my neighbours". Houses, lawnmowers, dogs and birds have a fundamentally different function in comparison to other people (including children). Other people do not exist for your convenience and enjoyment, so although it's not surprising that you might prefer your dog to them, it's also a fundamentally stupid sentiment.

Why would you instantly think someone’s silly for saying they prefer dogs to humans and why so triggered by it? Maybe they’ve been bullied, abused (physically or mentally). Maybe humans have failed them in ways dogs never have. It’s their life, their choice, their sentiment.

Dogs aren’t humans - what a revelation! No one said they were. But comparing them to houses and lawnmowers? That’s a stretch. Dogs give loyalty and joy, my house just sits there. My dogs have protected me, greet me with toys when I come home from work, and believe it or not, they actually have feelings. They bleed, feel pain, cry, etc. Find me a lawnmower that can do that. The hypocrisy is unreal.

You say, ‘Other people do not exist for your convenience and enjoyment,’ yet here you (and other fellow Pouty Paws Patrol) are, demanding that dog owners stop enjoying their lives and taking their dogs to dog-friendly spaces. Maybe it’s time to check your own entitlement before criticizing others for theirs.

Presumably you're not including assistance dogs...

Arent assistance dogs - perfectly necessary - put off by untrained wankers of dogs not behaving. In fact can people that need assistance dogs complain about it from that perspective? Please?

Coco1379 · 26/04/2025 22:45

In Norfolk dogs are banned on beaches during the summer season. Seems a good idea while beaches are crowded.

This more or less explains your earlier reply to me.

Like it or not, humans are who we are. The world is how it is. You may have a misty-eyed view of a fantasy world in which dogs, cats and gerbils are as important as people. I don’t, and no thinking person does.

There are three revealing things about MN threads complaining about dogs.

One is that dog lovers come along to say “oh no, another dog hate thread” without bothering to think of all the doghouse threads that stink the place up.

Another is that dog lovers compare their dogs to children.

The third is that dog (and other animal) owners will never accept that the appeal of a pet animal is that it can’t speak: it can’t tell you that it doesn’t like you. Unconditional love is your projection.

Anyway, I hope you and your dog live happy and fulfilled lives. Just don’t bring your dog into any shop or cafe I’m in. Ta.

A dog can definitely express whether it likes or dislikes a person. It doesn't need to be able to speak.

HangingOver · 26/04/2025 22:06

WinterKitchen · 26/04/2025 11:27

Why aren't these dog lovers adopting rescue dogs instead of spending a month's pay on one?

Rescues aren't suitable for a lot of households. Mine spent his whole life on the street or in a kennel. He's basically a giant puppy with dog factory settings only. The first three months were hell. Training an already grown up dog is HARD. I thank god every day he landed us with us after two failed adoptions, I have no idea what would have happened to him. Threads like these depress me tbh. He's sick ATM and I walked him on and off between midnight and 4am in the rain rather than risk him barking and waking my neighbours. Some of us are continually bending over backwards to keep our pups happy and fulfilled while not upsetting other people.

And how is someone treating their dog to an ice cream affect anyone else?
Another poster said it was disgusting as there are kids going without breakfast. How are they even linked?
They are not.
It is indulgent for a human to have an ice cream too. Maybe we should all be issued with state provided packs of Huel. Meets all our dietary needs. No need for anything fancy.

That was me, I think you misquote me, I didn't say it was disgusting. I said it was a criminal waste of resources. Clearly there is no point in trying to explain further. We have reached our impasse

GingerBeverage · 26/04/2025 21:50

There's probably a whole thesis could be written on what has brought the country to this point. Loneliness, the dropping birth rate, adult kids staying at home, covid anxiety, probably even Brexit.
People love being needed, and dogs do fill that function.

Wingingit247 · 26/04/2025 21:26

I’m a perimenopausal harridan and I’m fed up of being licked/clawed/jumped at/slobbered on/sniffed/deafened by smelly out of control dogs everywhere I go, while the simpering owners do nothing except reassure you how lucky you are to receive these unwanted gestures from their doggo pupper fur baby.

What a stupid remark. My grandson was terrified.

Yeah, just read that and was thinking the same. Imagine comparing a dog on the loose with a frightened child whose human instinct is to run away from danger. Hope he’s ok.

It’s so predictable. Every thread about dogs ends up comparing them to children. The world has gone insane.

You don't just kill a dog on a whim.

On this thread was a post from someone saying she would feed grapes to any dog that approaches her.
So I can believe that some people are that batshit callous.

I was at a lunchtime cafe a few weeks ago where a group at the next table allowed their dog to sit up on a chair at their table. Absolutely revolting. I pity the person who had to use that chair afterwards.

Oh my god, they would definitely have died!

How do you know a dog hadn't sat in your chair prior to you?

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 26/04/2025 20:54

Kardamyli2 · 25/04/2025 13:21

Get rid of the dog if you don't like it. Send it back to wherever you got it, or have it put to sleep. Your life will then be immeasurably improved.
