We might take the piss or look at them oddly if they said their dog speaks to them in English though. It’s not so much the believing in a god it’s all the quite frankly absurd stories that a grown adult should not, to my mind, be believing (talking donkeys, people disappearing up to heaven en masse without a by your leave). Those stories don’t deserve respect.

Why is a talking donkey less likely to exist than God? You don't have to agree with what we believe, but it's very clear that many intelligent adults do believe these things, and we deserve to be respected, as do you.

Yes, that's my point. We all get that you can, and should if you believe, love god. I am sure one can love god as you love your child.

But you can't argue with where your child came from because we know how babies are created. And therefore you can't argue with where mankind came from in the first place; it required a woman and a man, not god, a rib and a garden.

What has been happening on the second volume of this thread is that creationists have vehemently decryed the facts on the history of earth and mankind. And that's not credible, because there is verifiable evidence that proves how the earth was created, and how it and the life on it has evolved.

Where did this first woman and man come from though? Is it really more far fetched to say that God made them than to say that nothing exploded and people came from grown up pond slime?

But that contradicts with everything we understand and know about the way the world works… Some would say it’s impossible…

God can do impossible things. If he couldn't, he wouldn't be God.

Yes. If God can create the whole world in 6 days, of course he can make a snake capable of talking. Anyway, the snake was actually the devil taking the form of a snake.

But you can prove how babies are created as they always emerge from a woman's body. God can't be proven yet people love him in the same way they might love their partner or children. It's individual to them and probably incomprehensible to an outsider because that person may be perceived as being without personality, looks or a decent job.

No one has any certainty about their future but a day of judgment isn’t in mine.

How do you know though? So many people the world over are reporting near death experiences and they have a common pattern to them. These can't be attributed to a lack of oxygen or brain chemicals either. Something happens when we die, we just don't fully know what. There is an unseen realm. Whether you want to explain this by quantum mechanics or spirituality or both is up to you, but even science is finding that we can't assume things and base our beliefs in the material world anymore.

Not from what I've observed. I've just read some pretty unpleasant piss taking. It's something that believers have to accept and live with, but what's the point? You wouldn't start taking the piss out of someone because they loved their husband or children or pet dog. You might not feel the same way, or even understand, but you wouldn't jeer or be nasty. You'd just shrug and think "Oh well".

What is the repeatable evidence for evolution? As far as I am aware, cross species evolution has never been recreated in the lab.

It take thousands of years, which is the most significant reason the earth isn’t only few thousand years old.

What about the dinosaurs? Are the scientists wrong in stating they lived millions of years ago?

Actually Noah's ark isn't far fetched. The fossil records support the idea of a global flood. Some people in America built a life size replica of the ark, using the measurements given in the Bible, and showed that it could house all those animals.

What about the talking snake? Do you believe that?

You can choose to interpet questioning or incredulity at some peoples unwillingness to accept simple facts as piss taking, but I don't see any signs that that's the intention. The lengths that some believers are willing to go to to deny science are baffling. The first thread was more mainstream and balanced I think, on that I woudl agree.

You are doing a bit of a bait and switch by trying to equate it to love for your husband or child or dog though. Because if the believers did leave it as love for god and the teachings, as I and many have repeatedly said, that makes sense and while we don't feel the need, if it works for you then great

A better analogy would be if you had said you are so lucky that the stork had delivered you such a lovely child, and were then challenged by non believers saying 'hang on, that's not how babies are created'.

No one is questioning the love people have for their god - it's attributing things that are palpably nothing to do with god with god that is the issue!

That's your opinion though. The ideas of creation and a young earth are perfectly sane and intelligent. There is plenty of evidence out there.

RedWhite · 24/04/2025 16:39

I can’t see any evidence of unkindness generally. As a pp pointed out, there are so many questions about religious beliefs and many of which are difficult to answer for those with faith because they often conflict with science.

Those that reject the fact of evolution and believe the planet is only a a few thousand years old quite rightly point out the holes in that story and that’s what anything is without evidence, a story. The whole Noah’s ark story is unbelievable as it is far fetched and it’s not wrong to point that out because it is completely illogical. People can critically evaluate what they have been told and that’s what is happening here. I understand those of faith won’t like being because they don’t have the objective answers but it’s ok to critique a concept that has absolutely no evidence in any shape or form.

The Bible is a historical document, it's accuracy is backed up by archaeology and other historical documents. It does tell us some things about the future, but we don't know all the details

We don't exist for billions of years, we are born and live for, maybe, 80 or 90 years, and then we cease to exist again for the rest of time. We all die twice; once when we physically die, and again the last time anyone mentions our name. We should make the most of the 80 or 90 years we have with friends and family, to explore and experience things, to help others and the environment around us. Try and leave your bit of the world in a better pace than when you entered it :)

I like the idea of leaving the world a better place than we found it Smile

Those are all really good things, and things that Christians would say come from God. I'm not saying you can't have peace and purpose in this life without God, but what about eternity?

The Bible says when you look at the night sky you see the evidence of God. We are looking at the same things and coming to different conclusions.

And that’s fine but one is quantifiable the other isn’t.

Parker231 · 24/04/2025 16:40

CloseEncountersOfTheTurdKind · 24/04/2025 16:31

Yes, people have all different views on the day of judgement. It hasn't happened yet, so none of us can be sure exactly what will happen. The historical accuracy of the Bible is well evidences though. The British museum has many, many artifacts which back up the Bible narrative.

The Bible is a book of stories not a roadmap of what is going to happen to the real world.

I think it's a shame that these threads inevitably descend into arrogant name calling and unkindness from the atheists. Nobody owes anyone a kindness, but you have to wonder why people think it's okay to take the piss. You have to wonder where it even comes from. Is it necessary? Why does this behavioural pattern occur?
