To be shocked by a transwoman guest on Jeremy Vine today asking a female caller what sex she is - and whether she’s “been tested?”

I genuinely couldn’t believe what I was hearing. A woman called in to make a point and instead of responding to her argument, the guest asked her what sex she was - and even questioned whether she’d been tested to confirm it.

I found it incredibly demeaning and unsettling. AIBU to think this kind of behaviour undermines the whole idea of respectful discussion and actually silences women?

The problem with these debates is that most of the points made work from a basic assumption that there are two, distinct, black and white categories. The testing done in elite sport clearly demonstrates that in reality things aren’t quite as simple as that.

That piece of education is missing for so many people.

So while, yes, it was a very direct question, in a debate program where the differentiations are a key part of the debate it doesn’t seem unreasonable.

There are two black and white categories however.

For a tiny number of people, what category they are in may take a little extra investigation. But they will be in one or the other.

For the vast, vast majority of people there is no ambiguity at all.

Male and female. Every human that has ever lived has been either male or female.

Read back what you just wrote - yes, being challenged on your sex is demeaning and dehumanising. I imagine that was the point the trans woman on the radio was making.

The point being what?

That a male person with a philosophical belief that doesn't reflect material reality is asked questions about their sex for issues where sex matters?

There really is not comparison to be made here unless you somehow believe that a male person's philosophical belief about themselves should be treated as material reality regardless of whether it is materially real or not.

That will happen when you're claiming to be a sex you're not. That's the difference.

I think though that opens the door to other questions are woman who don’t have children still…?

We need to stop allowing these people to control the rhetoric and getting bogged down in the crazy. The Supreme Court has clarified what they mean by biological woman. For most of us it’s just common sense.

It really is an activist trying to make those listening think that their claim to being a female is plausible.

It is really offensive on several aspects. It uses those with differences of sex development for political gain. Also female people with other health issue.

And yet there is this plea to remember that this group is marginalised.

JasmineAllen · 23/04/2025 13:49

The caller should have just called his bluff and said yes, I've had a full profile done as part of genetic testing 😂

Well I’d say your friend was actually male so not a woman. Whether she should not be referred to as a woman, she/her and her presumably female name anymore, no I think that would just be unnecessarily cruel to someone who has already been through something traumatic. My personal view is that people with this sort of DSD should still be allowed to use the ladies toilet and changing rooms. They look female, haven’t gone through male puberty and are unlikely to be a threat to women. Nobody is likely to notice anyway. Saying that they’re biological women is inaccurate though.

It’s incredibly cruel to conflate issues facing those with DSD with trans issues….that persons friend IS a woman if they have androgen insensitivity as their body does not respond to male sex hormones and therefore they won’t have developed as a man and will have spent their whole life as a woman.

It’s not about being embarrassed to say you’re female - it’s about how the question was used. The caller was making a valid point and instead of engaging with it, the guest flipped it back with a bizarre and demeaning question about her sex and whether she’d “been tested.” That’s not respectful debate - that’s deflection and intimidation. It’s uncomfortable not because women can’t say what sex they are, but because being challenged like that, out of nowhere and on national TV, is dehumanising and meant to put someone on the back foot.

Some fool on tiktok was trying to say that as people with downs syndrome have an extra chromosome you can't be sure about their sex. Morons are everywhere and now it seems they are disablist too.

Rockhopper1 · 23/04/2025 13:13

Quite honestly I would be happy to do a cheek swab chromosome test & carry the results around with me if this is where we are atm . People with DSDs could have them too & indeed should have dispensation if they have a female DSD . It’s the XYs who shouldn’t be accessing women’s prisons / hospital wards / sports / taking female places on boards etc

Stupid question. My answer would be “years of periods and uterine fibroids”.

Yep I think I would have laughed tbh and asked if the 2 babies I gave birth to were enough of a test.

What utter nonsense. I think it’s actually good though, the more ridiculous they make themselves look the more people will start questioning whether the feminists were right all along

I'm wondering how I would answer....Years of periods, endometriosis, 3 miscarriages and 4 uterine biopsies. I'm guessing that that might be enough.

the question was ridiculous , just shows how desperate these men are .

Desperation personified.

Not all women are able to get pregnant, even if they wanted to, so I would not go down that road personally.

But only women do

id say I’ve been through puberty when I grew breasts and had periods, had 8 pregnancies and 3 births, had treatment for cervical cancer, am currently in menopause, recovering from surgery for investigations into uterine cancer.

actually ‘I don’t have a penis’ would be my answer!

ImConfusedDotComHelp · 23/04/2025 12:50

Solacesolipse · 23/04/2025 12:44

@AlertMaker I think when we have got into a situation that even the nhs asks on forms about your “gender assigned at birth” then there is a lot of unwinding to do about basic biology and language…and some individuals need to prove a belief they have about themselves, it says more about their state of mind.

I get the assigned at birth bit. It wasn't assigned it just is. Not all this picking one of over 150 later and chopping and changes.

Sex is binary. You cannot change sex. End this madness and delusional speech now.

ImConfusedDotComHelp · 23/04/2025 12:48

Jeremy Vine. Not a great show imo. So he has a man who identifies as a woman on as a guest and that person asks caller if tested. Strange world 2025.

Lostcat · 23/04/2025 12:46

I found it incredibly demeaning

the double think is beyond belief. Exactly OP, and now how do you think trans people feel when subjected to exactly the same except in every aspect of public life

lifeturnsonadime · 23/04/2025 12:41

It’s an attempt to suggest that sex is a ‘nebulous’ concept when it really isn’t.

TRA bullshit designed to argue that we can’t possibly know the sex of a man/ transwoman. Which is complete nonsense.

Brefugee · 23/04/2025 12:36

Seventree · 23/04/2025 10:40

It's a pretty weak argument but I guess there's some potential truth in it. I had a friend at uni who had presented biologically female from birth. After suffering from lots of pain and discomfort she ended up finding out she had some kind of chromosomal condition that meant she was biologically XY, despite having a vagina, growing breasts and being the average build for a woman.

In her case I'd say she's still a woman though... just with a rare biological condition. Completely different to someone who has gone through male puberty and has a penis so not really relevant in the trans debate 🤷‍♀️

kindly. If they have XY chromosomes they are not a woman.

This is the case for every person with DSDs and i have a lot of sympathy with them. However they have repeatedly asked not to be dragged into the trans debate, as that is not their issue or problem.

And what would your friend say, even looking and feeling like a woman, if we DID have to present a chromosome test before we entered a single-sex space? Because they have been tested and shown to be a man. It would be a disaster for them. Nobody i know has any problem with people like your friend coming into women's spaces. Nobody. But your friend can thank the rabid TRAs and AGPs who have fucked it up royally for everyone.

Brefugee · 23/04/2025 12:26

cardibach · 23/04/2025 10:09

A (gay male) friend who is normally sound on women’s rights issues posted on Facebook that now nobody knew which toilet to use as unless we’d had chromosome testing we couldn’t possibly be sure so it seems to be t(e new argument. Not sure how, given that DSDs which cause genuine confusion in observing sex at birth are very rare. But here we are.

i'd just say "no, plenty of us have done that absolutely unique female thing and had a baby, plenty more of us are doing/have done another absolutely unique female thing and have periods. And it's not as if we can't tell boys from girls, is it, otherwise how would you know who you fancy?"

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 23/04/2025 12:26

So, my first clue was that I was born with a vagina and not a cock. Pretty simple, really.

SueSuddio · 23/04/2025 12:22

There's a dim attempt at a 'gotcha' going around with memes about dsd conditions, which are vanishingly rare and unrelated to men wearing women's clothes and saying they are now women.

Ambiguity about sex is a different thing and extremely uncommon so to suddenly go 'what sex are you, have you been tested?' is just inane.

'Are you a biologist? No, I'm not a vet either but I know what a dog is.' as someone once said

‘Ever been tested as female’ Easy reply
yes at birth by a qualified nurse/doctor. This was recorded on my birth certificate & signed by the register of births & deaths.

Exactly. Did the trans woman guest share his male result?
