This amount of Easter eggs

To get straight into it - I get my children 10 Easter eggs each every Easter .

When I started it years ago , it was very cheap. I don’t get the huge ones . Years ago I could get one or 2 big ( the ones that are now medium ) and then the little ones ( they had more packaging and more in them ) and I would spend £20.

It all stems from my son’s autism , he is a young adult now. I’ve always said that birthday and Christmas is at least 10 presents and 10 eggs at Easter . It’s usually more at Christmas but it has became a security thing - he knows he’s getting at least 10 presents ( he does not care about the price , he’s not spoiled . I could get his main present and then 9 things from the pound shop ) .

I have had comments about it being too much . I don’t get gifts and balloon arches or anything like that. My youngest never eats them all , he barely touches them and we eat a lot of them 🤣 but I can’t get him less. Usually at the end of half term we melt the uneaten eggs and make cakes - so that’s an activity for a day of the holidays - , the uneaten chocolates all end up in a box for anyone to have.

For info - this is what I spent.

I got 2 of the “ 2 for £9” eggs , the bigger ones. So they have one each of those. Usually I get some medium and some small but as the small were £1.50 ( and I left it late so couldn’t find any anyway) but the medium were £2.30 in Asda I didn’t bother with the small. So I then got 4 for £12 ( 2 each ) then they had 7 each of the £2.30 ones . I spent £53 in total , so £26.50 each . Usually it’s less as I grab the smaller ones when they’re on offer in Morrisons , it just happened that I left it late this year.

Yes, it’s a lot on chocolate . But I see people getting hampers and balloons etc .

Is this really over the top ?

If you could fully comprehend the op maybe you wouldn’t have completely missed the point of the thread. What part are you particularly struggling with so it can be explained better to you?

Do you need me to explain my post better to you?

Because from where I'm sitting, it's perfectly clear.

There is absolutely no point in this thread since the OP can do what she wants with her own money and her own family.

Yes, I think 10 Easter eggs is far too much for any child (plus I imagine they get some from others?) but you did ask!

They didn’t get any from others this year . Last year they got a lot from others , and we had way too much chocolate around . I asked family not to buy . I said it was unnecessary. I told my son that others wouldn’t be buying, he was fine he knows it’s not Christmas so doesn’t expect it from others. In the past he’s said thanks and then just left the egg where it is and it’s not got eaten . Because he has his quota .

In your situation, I'd just do what works. Who cares what anyone else thinks, they aren't parenting your child.

Low income here too :) I'm sure it's cos we place a higher value on being decadent a couple of times a year (easter/Christmas).

That makes sense !

10 is a lot of eggs

but more the cost. Spending £50 is insane imo

so get smaller eggs either for 99p or as Easter moves yearly work out when it is next year

Good Friday: 3rd April / Easter Sunday: 5th April / Easter Monday: 6th April.

and buy early

I am definitely doing that next year . I said I would this year but then life got in the way! I have never spent this much on Easter before .

CoastalCalm · 22/04/2025 11:28

Personally I’d switch to 10 things rather than 10 eggs - so maybe two eggs and then some other small gifts. It’s a huge amount to spend on something that doesn’t seem to be needed just wanted

AquaPeer · 22/04/2025 11:28

Pinkbleach · 22/04/2025 11:26

Mainly - do people think 10 eggs is massively over the top ?

As a child for me , there was mountains of chocolate. So it never struck me as it being too much .

would I ever go out and spend £50 on chocolate any other time ? God no . But at Easter , it doesn’t seem crazy to me

Honestly, it’s 2025. £50 isn’t much full stop, sadly 😂

no 10 eggs isn’t too much. Who cares, basically. Mine easily had 10 from various sources, I didn’t even count them

What exactly is your AIBU though?

You're doing what you need to do to keep your DS calm and regulated.

Other than that it's just a thread of posters giving you suggestions to reduce the amount of eggs / offering alternatives to eggs and you saying that won't work as your child will become upset and anxious?

Times such as , birthdays , Easter are very stressful for him as he can’t differentiate between anxiety and excitement. Everything is different - routine is different , people visit , he’s off school / college. So if I can make it easier by making one thing be exactly the same each time then I will do that .

Youve answered your own question in this - and your other posts honestly. You do this because it helps your autistic son to feel calmer and more regulated at times that can be difficult for him. Therefore how can it possibly be too much?

People on AIBU are of course going to come on and argue that it is though - it’s just what this forum is for. I mean they’re outing themselves in the process, they clearly have either no reading comprehension skills, limited empathy or both. But I can only agree with the previous poster who said dont do this to yourself - if this is what you need to do then it’s just what you need to do, why does it matter what anyone else thinks?

Pinkbleach · 22/04/2025 11:25

AquaPeer · 22/04/2025 11:22

Of course it isn’t Op, but your post is literally inviting people to comment that it is.
why are you even concerned? Can’t you afford the £53? That would obviously be a problem but one that would be obvious to you

for comparison I ran into hotel chcolat at the station at 5pm Thursday and sank £78 buying an Easter egg for my partner, 2 chocolate bunnies for my nieces and 2 chocolate sandwiches for my kids.

my husband spent god knows what on another few more eggs for the kids and stuff for a hunt, as well an medium sized eggs for 8 adult family members (I know🤣)

it’s Tuesday now and I’ve basically already forgotten about it all. Why are you worried still?

I’m not really worried to be honest . I do every a good AIBU 🤣

wow that’s a lot of money on chocolate - but the main thing is , did you enjoy sitting in your PJs eating it 🤭

Honestly? Don't do this to yourself. Free yourself from worrying about what strangers think! You do something that works for your family and that you can presumably afford. Are your kids happy with their Easter? Are you?

I echo this.

I’m intrigued as to why posting about it is unreasonable ? Isn’t this what the board is for ? To vent and get opinions ?

Yes, 10 eggs each really is a lot.

Easter is my favourite holiday. Most of the eggs are actually not very nice, they aren't as nice as the chocolate bars they come with. We get about 5 eggs, there's always leftover for baking from that. I get myself a Thorntons and a Kinder too. The 5 kids eggs are hidden around the house, one is usually an Easter bunny.

I do eat a lot of the eggs . I tell my husband not to bother getting me an egg as I’ll have some of the kids !

I much prefer chocolate from an egg than the bars

Your going to get loads of flack on here because Mumsnet is full of fun sponges who think the slightest bit of chocolate will result in your child getting diabetes and being a burden on the state.

If you can afford it, and it makes you happy, then it's fine.

My two got quite a bit this year for various reasons and on Sunday and Monday they were allowed as much as they liked. There's loads left and they will get a bit after each evening meal as a pudding. It will keep them going for over a month.

People are acting on here like Easter eggs go off after a day.

I've noticed they expire a lot more quickly now, like most labels actually the past few years. Everything has a much shorter date on it. All our eggs and easter foods are out of date by early June and some as early as next week. They do taste off, especially the Waitrose ones in paper packaging, they start to taste horrible.

Chavtastic indeed. What did you do, order an extra bar of 80% cocoa chocolate from Ocado so little Ottilie and Hugo could have 2 squares instead of 1 as their Easter treat?

This made me giggle 🤭

Yes I get this - people seem to think that the eggs are going to be eaten in a day !

I still have a bag full of chocolate from selection boxes at Christmas ! Which reminds me I should probably chuck out ( not bought by me I will add - that’s another tradition , one selection box ! )

If this is what you need to do to help regulate your autistic DS, then you're not being unreasonable.

Posting about it though is more definitely unreasonable.

Buy them on Easter Monday for the following year, usually the dates on chocolate is years away and you could possibly stash them especially if they aren't actually eaten that much.

Pinkbleach · 22/04/2025 11:19

JengaTower124 · 22/04/2025 11:14

who cares what anyone else thinks?

Buy what you want and what works for your family!! fuck everyone else!!

Spending £26 per child on some eggs isn't a lot and it makes them happy.

Thank you ☺️

I don’t think it’s too much - it works for me .

But the comments I’ve had I found odd as it was as though I was over the top . Then I look on Facebook and people have presents like it’s Christmas and I’m thinking - that’s way more than £26 ?!
