Brother texts greetings in Welsh

My brother lives in Wales but he is English. He doesn't want to be Welsh, but every time he texts me at Christmas, New Year, birthday, etc he will do it in Welsh. So this weekend it was
Me: Happy Easter DB
DB: Pasg Hapus to you too

Don't get me wrong I like Wales, it's a lovely country, I like the Welsh and if a Welsh person wished me Happy Easter in Welsh that'd be fine but my brother is English and so am I. Every bloody time he does it.
A greeting in Welsh means nothing to me and yes I can work it out, but it doesn't half irk me and I know it's annoying me far more than it should.
AIBU to just want greetings in the language we both speak?

Many of us that are English and live in Wales speak some of the lingo, it's practical! Especially in Lidl because they annouce the till number in Welsh first.

Diolch! 😜

Welsh is a dying language and if we don't use it, it will be gone. My husband is Welsh (not a native Welsh speaker, but had maintained an interest in speaking Welsh beyond his compulsory GCSE in Welsh). He is eager for all of his children to learn Welsh, which is essentially what happens in English medium Welsh schools - there are also many Welsh medium Welsh schools where Only Welsh is spoken.
In many areas of Wales, Welsh is the spoken language, so nobody living in these areas is being unreasonable in using Welsh. It isn't hard to look up online/use Duolingo etc so if you have a Welsh relative, then I think it's reasonable to expect them to speak Welsh and to learn a few Welsh phrases to get along with them.

I'm sure many people would learn French/Spanish/Italian to go in holiday or to converse with relatives. Why not Welsh??

It's just that everyone in the entire world expects everyone to know English. Why,?? Why is it too hard for English people to learn French or Spanish?? Why is Welsh seen as different? Why is everyone in France/Spain/ Italy and the Scandinavian countries expected to know English??!

Why can't we learn their languages??

Yep. We can't be bothered, that's why. European people in multiple countries should be expected to pander to the English speaker - why?? Spanish is actually the most widely spoken language in the world so why are English people so precious?

Nope, Madarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world. Also anytime I’ve been abroad I try to speak a couple of phrases in Spanish or Italian or French. Especially please and thank you, even if my accent is the worst ever🫣

ThinWomansBrain · 24/04/2025 02:07

A friend is on holiday in Italy, texted Buona Pasqua
she isn't Italian, I am not Italian, neither of us religious, she wouldn't normally bother to text Happy Easter.
Not especially bothered by it - why would I be?

Nice that he is embracing his new home.

No wonder the English changed all our place names when they invaded Ireland!

They can't cope with grammatical complexity.

Flibberteegibbet · 23/04/2025 21:32

Noswaith dda!

I lived in Wales for several years and almost everyone, Welsh speaking or not, said hello, thanks, happy birthday etc in Welsh whether they were Welsh/English or something else. We don’t live there now but still use Welsh occasionally at home and when speaking to our Welsh friends. I don’t see it as any different to friends greeting me using a term that’s local to them (ay up me duck etc 🤣🤣) even when they’re not originally from there

Alibab1 · 23/04/2025 19:36

I think it’s cute. Why not? I’d be quite happy for my brother to do that. My brother went to another country for a few months and came back bearing all kinds of foreign ways of speaking that he continues to employ many years later. It’s fine. It probably feels more true to him and I don’t judge. Perhaps your bro is just really feeling Wales. Not a bad thing at all.

復活節快樂
Literally means happy Resurrection Festival.

Is that Chinese ?

YDBear · 23/04/2025 19:15

DrPrunesqualer · 22/04/2025 03:00

It is very odd as he knows you don’t speak Welsh

Why not reply in other languages. Perhaps you could help him learn how to say happy Easter In loads of languages

Frohe Ostern - German
Pasaka njema - Swahili
Caisc Shona duit - Irish
Felices Pascuas - Spanish

Id love to do Chinese and Russian etc but I don’t know how to change my script

apologies to all German, Spanish, Swahili and Irish speakers if I spelt anything wrong 😁

復活節快樂
Literally means happy Resurrection Festival.

CautiousLurker01 · 23/04/2025 18:36

I think it’s funny - I’d find an equally obscure language to reply in.

TheMauveBeaker · 23/04/2025 18:30

My sister’s English but lives in Ireland. She texts me greetings in Irish, I text her greetings in Irish. It’s amusing for both of us when I do it, as often Google Translate doesn’t get it quite right 😂. YABU, it’s harmless.

I didn't say your opinion was wrong, I said

"People are saying you are wrong, in their opinion"

I think the actual problem is your comprehension of what's being said to you. I don't think you are reading post properly and just going for peoples throats because you feel like nobody is agreeing with you.

Then you started to be rude to people. You now want to leave it, because you've not got your point across and have resorted to telling people to go have a coffee or a lie down which is not really constructive or relevant.

If anyone is rude or making personal attacks then they should be reported to MN
Ihavent gone back over the whole thread but other MNs posts have been deleted.

Lets all report if there’s an issue

DrPrunesqualer · 23/04/2025 14:01

CatSnackTagine · 22/04/2025 18:46

Nomas plenty of people have called you out on this silliness
There's no need to keep lashing out and posting Chinese characters that people can easily Google in this day and age for a bit of international fun on a birthday.

I don't need a nice lie down but you do need to perhaps calm down a bit you're coming across so horribly.

It’s fine to have different opinions.
OP feels the same which is why the thread exists…..to ask for opinions.

There's no need for anyone to pile on another just because they have a different opinion.
It’s called democracy and I think it’s great to hear how others feel about a particular issue. Hopefully it will make us all a little more accepting

InSpainTheRain · 22/04/2025 19:36

I would use Google translate and change every message into another language, even the important stuff 😀

That’s so incredibly arrogant, to tell people their opinion is wrong. You can respectfully disagree but calling people names for their opinion is what’s wrong.

You have conveniently ignored the aggressive posts, or they have been deleted.

Anyway, it’s clear we’re not going to see eye to eye on this so maybe just leave it.

And a fair few others if you care to look

You haven't been shut down, people are just saying you are wrong in their opinion, I tend to agree with them though

What you said about people being unable to translate obvious common greetings didn't really work with most people's views, although you're entitled to your view it seems to be unpopular and you aren't able to handle that

Nobody has called you an idiot as far as I can see and I have read the full thread...

The only person I can see being aggressive to others is you, Nomas

Plenty of people being you?

If people disagree with you politely, you don’t get to shut them down by calling them fucking idiot and fucking morons. Which is what people have done on this thread.

Maybe you should be telling those people to calm down?

I think it’s lovely if he has started to assimilate himself with the place he lives. Though could easily just be an annoying brother thing.😂 I think YAB-a tad-U to be wound up by it though. Slight tangent but I personally think it’s brilliant to use the language. I am English and have often thought it would be nice for children to be taught at least one of our neighbouring languages (Welsh, Irish Gaelic or Scottish Gaelic) in schools, instead of - in many cases - two continental languages.

Don’t drink coffee, I’m going for yoga on the beach. But as you’re being patronising, maybe time for you to step away and consider how abhorrent your attitude is towards people who speak a repressed language that has a massive history behind it that you care neither to understand nor acknowledge.

Can you quote which bit was abhorrent?
