To cancel our summer holiday because of snoring

Toastedpickle · 21/04/2025 21:56

Just been away with DH and kids. His snoring meant that I have come back exhausted. I booked a three bedroom place so that I could sleep in a different room but, due to the layout of the house and the excessive noise he makes, I could still hear every snort despite ear plugs.

We are due to go on holiday again the summer for a week but I just can’t do it. I get so anxious about going away nowadays purely for this, worrying that where we stay will have thin walls or that it will keep the kids awake. It costs more having to get the extra room. I also hate sleeping on my own in a strange house. We don’t share a bed at home anymore and it’s so lonely. I’m on a pull up bed in the spare room which isn’t ideal.

yabu - get over it / don’t cancel holiday
yanbu - snoring is hell / cancel holiday

She already said she can hear him through the ear plugs.

Hamabeed · 23/04/2025 07:33

The one who snores is the one who gets out of the main bedroom. The one making the antisocial noise, the one affecting someone else’s sleep is the one who’s the problem and the one who must get out! All the more if like my DH they don’t try to do anything about it.

Holidays are a nightmare situation with snoring. We have ended up just paying for places with more rooms, or DH downstairs on the sofa in holiday cottages.

Sleep deprivation is torture.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 23/04/2025 07:11

if He hasn’t investigated the cause of the snoring, it’s really selfish of him.

DH was a snorer, losing weight did the trick (he wasn’t hugely overweight but he does get to a ‘snoring’ weight), but it could be sleep apnea or something else.

Sharing a room with a snorer is absolute torture, you have my sympathies.

it he won’t seek help, his turn to have the pull up bed!

He needs to speak to his GP ASAP! Sleep apnoea can be deadly!

I put up with DH's snoring for years, I wore ear plugs, filmed him and would bump him when he stopped breathing and had massive, pauses.

In the end, I completed the epworth score (below) from what I'd seen and sent to to DH's GP for a consultation. He had a telephone appointment, then eventually one with a respiratory surgeon. Equipment was sent out, so he never needed to go to a sleep clinic. He now has a CPAP machine. He lost 10kg, the machine is almost silent and he doesn't nap in the day. On the very rare occasion he has napped, he no longer snores and hopes to get off the machine very soon.

I, however, am still trying to wean myself off wearing ear plugs- something I have done for over 10yrs!

Thanks very useful

I find wearing the wax ear plugs and then once they are in I kind of block my own ears by sniffing. This worlds perfectly if you can do it.

CannotWaitForSummervibes · 23/04/2025 06:20

why are you on the pull out bed? Switch rooms with your husband, he needs to go on the pull out bed and get his snoring sorted at the gp. You are way too accommodating for something that he could get medically treated.
in the meantime you need to get a better pair of earplugs.

lauram31 · 23/04/2025 03:01

Empathise with you massively , it’s exhausting for him understandably but also the effect it has on the partner . he’s on the waiting list waited 2 years nearly now ! we’ve had to split off so he goes in the attic bedroom and I stay downstairs in my bedroom . when he has a cold etc it’s ten times worse ! It’s really exhausting to listen to and actually impacts a relationship so much , it’s driven a massive wedge between us , I’m 36 and feel like I’m in my 50s , not sure if yours does it but he will fall asleep watching tv or a film 90% if the time also ! cant wear earplugs etc because we have a little one so need to be able to listen out for him /
get a referral from your GP!
bot sure of many sub decisions !!

Our dog snores and now that he’s elderly, he prefers to sleep in our room, I think it makes him feel safe. We’ve got used to it, but I wish he would consider sleeping elsewhere!
We’ve don’t have the heart to chuck him out though. So even though I’ve worked out that side sleeping stops my snoring, poor DH still has to put up with the dog!

I feel for you so much. My DH snores terribly and won’t see a GP so we sleep in separate rooms at my instigation and he falls out with me about it all the time. He doesn’t realise just how hard it is to function on no sleep.

I think most snorers just don't get how torturous it is to attempt to sleep next to them. The dread of going to bed, the fear you won't fall asleep first, the absolute exhaustion and frustration. It's hard to explain unless you've been on the receiving end. Obviously nobody sets out to be a pain in the arse and snore all night. Doesn't change the fact it's horrendous for the person being kept awake every single night though. My dad was a terrible snorer and used to get so angry at being nudged awake every time it got to epic levels. He said it was denying HIM sleep. How did he think we all felt?

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 22/04/2025 15:45

Has hubby done anything about his snoring?

weight loss, mouth guard, nose strips etc he may even have sleep apnoea!

mugglewump · 22/04/2025 15:31

My DH snores badly and our day to day solution is separate rooms, but when we go away, I wear silicone earplugs like these.
They work a treat. I'd wear them at home too if I wasn't afraid of not hearing my morning alarm to get up. The foam earplugs do not work, but these really do the trick.

Bobnobob · 22/04/2025 15:16

He’s the one making the noise! Why are you on the pull out!? Has he got help for this at all? Or tried to lose weight if that’s the problem?

Roozkitty · 22/04/2025 15:14

A cpap machine saved our marriage - and our holidays - you can travel with them! Ok, it uses up your hand luggage allowance, but that's the only downside!

No-one should underestimate the damage it can do to a relationship

Heronwatcher · 22/04/2025 14:40

Can’t you just leave DH behind or book him
into a premier inn?

Snoring is a disgusting habit. Book a GP and/or private clinic appointment to deal with it, no debate.

Snoring is not a habit.

Although I agree that a GP appointment is needed if this hasn’t happened as yet there is no guarantee a solution will be found. Snoring is notoriously hard to ‘deal with’ and often can’t be fixed.

CorbyTrouserPress · 22/04/2025 14:33

Ponoka7 · 22/04/2025 13:07

Neither dies the OP, which is why they need an appointment. That level of snoring isn't within the usual level.

I totally agree, only a doctor can diagnose whether it’s sleep apnoea. There are many reasons why a person snores so a randomer on the internet telling her that’s what it WILL be is not helpful.

Oh snap @bigknitblanket! They really are magic.

I’ve shared them on here many times 😂

Jonismorf · 21/04/2025 22:43

Don't punish the poor man because he has a medical condition. Help and support him!

We don’t know what causes him to snore. With my husband it’s beer , being heavier or a cold. The first two are entirely within his gift to sort so no sympathy.

Redruby2020 · 22/04/2025 13:47

Hi OP can totally understand this, felt like this in the past, not saying all men snore but many do. And that lol amongst many other reasons puts me off ever wanting a full time partner again.

i have to suffer every time my neighbour below me has her bf staying. Which despite him not living here allegedly, he’s here a lot. He snores terribly lastnight was not good at all, especially with today being the first day back for school etc. It is often over looked as normal, but it should require medical advice. Some men won’t bother.

You shouldn’t have to be on a put up bed. Has DH sought any advice on the snoring.

SomewhereOverTheRainbow2013 · 22/04/2025 13:40

My husband snores so badly he sleeps in a different room. What has been a huge game changer for me was getting a bluetooth sleep mask from amazon, and using a white noise track on Spotify designed to overcome the sound of snoring. I've also just bought to accompany if snoring is extra bad some tiny earbuds that are designed for side sleeping to block out extra noise. I've not tried these yet though as have an ear infection. But the buds are very small and are also bluetooth so hoping they'll be an added extra if needed although I probably won't use for white noise as the battery isn't as good as the sleep mask. I hope this suggestion helps as it really works for me. The masks and earbuds aren't hugely expensive. The earbuds can be. Depends if you needed high end ones. But you should be able to get both items for around £30 all in which isn't prohibitively expensive. If you search white noise snoring you should find a few options. It took me a while to find the perfect one for me. But I can't sleep without it now!

Welshmonster · 22/04/2025 13:30

Leave DH at home if he won’t get it looked at. Record him so he realises how loud it is from different rooms.
