Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

I don’t put the plates down for the dog but I’d he licks them on the dishwasher I don’t particularly mind. As you say they are going to washed at a high temperature.

Missing the point but why are you using the 90 degree setting. I usually use the slow echo one which is up to 65 degrees but often lower.

This must be a US thing as UK domestic dishwashers only tend to have cycles up to 70'C tops.

Our dog bowls get washed in the sink with their own separate scrubber and are dried with paper towels.

I love these comments, which now sound like people are implying they go above and beyond, like ‘Obviously, I soak the bowls in 120 degrees boiling water for 24 hours, in a bowl kept specifically for dirty dog bowls, followed by sterilising them for another 24 hours and use a hard wire brush (again specifically for dirty dog bowls), and finally they are tested with ultraviolet light for lingering germs…….’

Op, if the dog licks them really clean, just put them back in the cupboard. No one will ever know. Energy saving tip right there.

lol, great idea.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/04/2025 16:56

Hmmmm. I don’t see the diff tbh as they go in the dw and get deep cleansed

im prob skanky

tho I’m not a dog owner

but sure I’ve held out the odd plate for a friends dog to lick

@Missohnoyoubetterdont thank you!
People on here are badly informed.

@XenoBitch The colonoscopes are washed by the endoscopy tech or other endoscopy staff using a special sponge that has cleansers made for cleaning the scope. There are special attachments that are then placed on it and it’s placed into a special washing machine. The attachments are connected to lines that run a Glutaraldehyde solution through the scope to clean and disinfect the inside of the scope when the machine is running. It also cleans the outside of the scope and rinses it. Sometime an alcohol solution is used as a final rinse. There are special test strips that can be used to test if the colonoscope has any biological matter or residue. If anything is detected it is re-cleaned the same as above and tested again. I don’t think a normal dishwasher does the same for dog licked plates. 🤣

Nah, I worked in theatres. It is spit and polish (joking).

I think we are going a little off topic here. Maybe a new thread idea @investmentquandry !

LSmiff · 21/04/2025 16:54

It depends on how many arses the dog’ s licked.

WaltzingWaters · 21/04/2025 16:54

Utterly disgusting. I know it’s going to be washed in the dishwasher at a high temperature and all, but still, majorly grim (and I say this as a dog owner). I mean, just scrape the scraps into the dogs bowl.

I’d be really reluctant to eat at yours in future also.

I wash my dogs bowls by hand every morning. With my rubber gloves on. I don‘t put them in the dishwasher. They don’t need to go in the dishwasher.

Fucking amateur.

I ship my dog bowls off to Mars to get washed. They take months to come back, and even then they have space dust on them.

DoYouReally · 21/04/2025 16:54

The level of denial with some dog lover never ceases to amazing me.

I bet the same ones who put dog dishes in with normal dishes are those who don't think their houses smells or those who are oblivious to the dog hairs everywhere, the people who let the dogs in beds and on other kitchen surfaces and the type who refer to themselves as "dogmums".

It really is vile.

Nope! They turn up anyway 🤣🤣 often with treats for the dogs 😎

Do you lick your husband's penis in front of guests?

Now that’s a whole other fetish. 🤣🤣

ScarlettOYara · 21/04/2025 16:54

Dishwashers do not sterilize.
They sanitize.
Please don't let animals slobber over whatever a person has to eat or drink from.

OMG the hypocrisy!

"I couldn't possibly eat off a plate that a dog had licked, before it was washed at 90 degrees, however, I have no problem licking my husband's penis"

OOOOKKKAAAAYYYY.

worcesterpear · 21/04/2025 16:53

I have a feeling mil used to do this, and I did find it off-putting but understood there was no logical reason why, as the dishwasher would kill all germs. It's up there with people letting their dog lick their face.

SnakesAndArrows · 21/04/2025 16:41

For those with pets who don’t put the pet bowls in the dishwasher, how are you cleaning them?

In the special pet utensils washing-up bowl in hot soapy water after presoaking them.

GingerPaste · 21/04/2025 16:52

Sorry. Team gross here 🤮
