To think we can move to a nicer home now?

DH thinks we should stay put until both DC get into secondary school. We live quite close to a decent secondary school which would be guaranteed from where we currently live.

however if we move we could get a much nicer, bigger home with a lovely garden and much needed extra space. I’m desperate to move. DC are 7 and 9

we would be moving from KT17 (Epsom) to SM7 (Banstead) and would be a really nice upgrade on the property. Kids are bright and think would do fine anywhere, but DH feels strongly about schools. AIBU to think he is overthinking this!?

I'd live in a caravan rather than send my kids to a crappy school.

Colleague only moved that way once she got the eldest dc into school. They moved for more space because it's cheaper but I think she regrets it a bit.

I totally agree with your DH. Family staying from a road need to avail themselves of one of the local Premier Inns as there's no room at yours.

Banstead is cheaper for a reason.

milleniumstar · 21/04/2025 08:45

You definitely need to stay put.

I’ve just looked and the secondary school does prioritise siblings, so we may just need to wait until eldest gets in if we decide/agree to wait

The secondary school in Banstead isn’t great, so your DH is right to be cautious about moving early.

Thanks all, we can walk to station atm.

for space we have 3 bed but dc often need to share as we have family from abroad staying a lot. 4 bed would fix this.

also we would love an extra reception room as it’s just kitchen with small table and then living room downstairs.

Banstead high street is nice but colleague spends her life as a taxi for her dc as the station is quite far from their house & not great for walking particularly in winter. Not sure how this compares to where you are now though.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 20/04/2025 23:54

Unless you are guaranteed to get into a good school once you've moved stay until the eldest gets I to secondary school, the other one will be easier to get in as a sibling.

milleniumstar · 20/04/2025 23:53

Schools should be the priority, I can't think of any good ones that serve Banstead so your DH is right.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/04/2025 23:31

@SaladSandwichesForTea as they say - it’s all relative- how much more is ‘more needed space - I saw someone who posted this the other week and had a nice 1600 sq ft home- and 3 of them - it was more ‘wants’ certainly not ‘needs’

SaladSandwichesForTea · 20/04/2025 23:26

He has a valid reason for feeling how he does and he should have an equal say.
He's not saying no, just not yet. For reasons that seem understandable.

It sounds like your current home is fine, you just want more? Or are you suffering in a tiny 2 bed with twins on the way that force a move?

verycloakanddaggers · 20/04/2025 23:26

Agree with your DH that school is the priority.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 20/04/2025 23:24

Depends what schools in the new area are like. Also would your kids have to move primary school?

4forksache · 20/04/2025 23:23

This

KatyaKat · 20/04/2025 23:22

The most obvious question is what are the schools like in the area you're moving to. Schools are important, so unless they're equally as good or better, I would stay put.
