To ask if anyone wore an 'alternative' wedding dress/outfit?

I'm mid 30s and no offense to those who did but I have zero interest in wearing a highly elaborate, white traditional wedding dress complete with train and veil.
I'm not even bothered about wearing white! Would probably spend around £50 max on it.

Just wondering if anyone else wore something different?

I wore an ivory ted baker dress - it was knee length and had lovely ruffled sleeves and I wore it with converse

TheSmallAssassin · 19/04/2025 00:13

I wore a just below the knee dress from Coast in a jewel colour. I was nearly 40, we got married in a (nice) registry office and our kids walked down the aisle with us, I would have felt a bit ridiculous in a traditional white gown. Nobody batted an eyelid.

I wore my mums wedding dress which was nearly 60 years old. Very plain ivory and it felt magical … I had lost mum the year before so it felt special to honour her by choosing to wear her dress.

My friend gave me some alternative wedding magazines after her wedding and before mine. I was very tempted to wear a black wedding dress but I didn't have the nerve to do it in the end. She on the other hand had a stunning burgundy velvet dress with goth-style flowers, was amazing.

CountryMumof4 · 18/04/2025 23:58

I'm with you, OP. I tried on a whole load of traditional wedding dresses and didn't feel right. I opted for a 50s style tea dress in the end and felt more me. Noone commented negatively. In fact, they all complimented me on how it fit and suited my style (and husband loved it). You do you - sod what anyone else thinks!

WilfredsPies · 18/04/2025 23:52

Mine was black, midi length, a bodice style top with straps and a fifties style skirt with enough petticoats to make it swish. I fell in love with it on line, went to see it in the same shop I bought my bridesmaid’s dress from, and knew straight away it was the one. I got that happy feeling, couldn’t stop grinning and didn’t want to take it off.

We had a church wedding, so I think there was an expectation from some of DH’s more distant family that I’d go for something more traditional but everyone who knew me wasn’t surprised in the slightest. My MiL actually rolled her eyes 😂 I only have two regrets. I paid an extortionate amount for some customised shoes and they were so bloody uncomfortable I ended up leaving them in the car and wearing my battered old converse down the aisle, so I wish I just gone with the converse from the start, and I found a head piece I wanted to wear from a very alternative milliner and I let my mum put doubt in my head that my DH would hate it and it would embarrass him in front of his family (it wouldn’t have, he loved it). So I wish I’d ignored her opinion and gone with my gut.

I was engaged before and had bought my dress. An ivory full length number. Very elegant, very simple, very plain. It really was a beautiful dress. And I felt absolutely nothing when I put it on, other than seeing it was a beautiful dress. Go with what gives you that happy feeling. And that doesn’t matter if it’s a gold sequin ballgown or a purple jumpsuit from the high street. And sod other people’s opinions; they already had their wedding day and if they like white silk dresses so much, they can wear one as a guest!

I just saw a wedding dress on Reddit that was a black long gown with sort of cabbage rose floral motif. It was stunning.

Intranslation · 18/04/2025 23:05

Our niece got married this year in a beautiful green midi dress with art deco kind of look. She made it herself, very talented woman.

My Mum got married in the mid 50s in a ballerina length, pale pink dress. You can't tell on the photos because they are in black and white.

outerspacepotato · 18/04/2025 23:04

City Hall, vintage 1930s tiered flowery dress.

GoogolB · 18/04/2025 23:03

It doesn’t have to be weddingy or expensive, but do wear something that makes you feel beautiful and special. I love the idea of it being a dress you wear again often, so that each time you can be reminded of your wedding.

funkyweddingdress · 18/04/2025 23:01

I wore a full length crimson dress (I look ill in white, not ideal for getting married) - and it was a traditional church wedding; I was in my 20's. No-one commented on the day, though I've had those who don't know me as well be surprised when they've seen photos. A friend wore similar (though orange) for hers; she was a little older, but again, a traditional church wedding.

We're the only ones who have gone really off piste at church. Another friend wanted to, but the vicar wasn't impressed (I didn't ask mine, but I'm sure he didn't mind, as he was even less keen on mindless tradition than me). Friends who've got married elsewhere have worn all sorts of colours, though usually long dresses.

Pericombobulations · 18/04/2025 22:56

Forgot to mention, a friend rang nearer the wedding to ask if I minded that she had found the perfect dress to wear to our wedding but it was a cream velvet evening dress, did I mind. Laughingly I told her, it will be nice if someone was wearing a white dress at the wedding as I woudnt be.

Pericombobulations · 18/04/2025 22:53

Whilst we had a traditional church wedding, and I wore a reasonably traditional wedding dress, it was white chiffon overlaid on blue satin made for me, so the dress was a pale blue in a similar style to Galadriel in LOTR. Only my aunt made a comment to my mum, I learnt afterwards, questioning why I had chosen blue not white. But no one else commented.

Whilst I never have had the chance to rewear it, I still love it.

Commonsense22 · 18/04/2025 22:53

I was an older bride and wore the big white dress because I wanted to. Went all out with a cathedral train and absolutely no regrets.

But by all means wear what you want! I almost feel like these days the big white dresses are less common. My favourite unconventional outfit was a bride who wore a full length gold dress. Stunning.

Conventional or not, it's the one chance you get to wear absolutely what you want so go for it.

AlertCat · 18/04/2025 22:37

If I’d had a big wedding, I really like the idea of a white jumpsuit (Carina on station 19 wore a nice one if anyone saw that)

ah, I went to. A wedding recently and the bride wore a white jumpsuit. She looked absolutely amazing. Incidentally my friend was wearing a navy jumpsuit as a guest and she also looked amazing. Jumpsuits can be fabulous on very different body shapes.

BeeCucumber · 18/04/2025 21:38

I wore a grey wool red lined crombie coat from Swanky Modes over a black mini dress with black tights and 16 hole Doc Martens.

FuckityFux · 18/04/2025 21:18

Yes, I wore an inexpensive ordinary flowery summer dress from Monsoon although I really wanted to wear linen trousers and a nice blouse but my sister persuaded me against them.
I should have gone with my instinct as I hate dresses and skirts as they make me feel frumpy. It’s a nice pretty dress but I never wore it again as I don’t do dresses.

Definitely wear what the hell you want to @Coronationchicken34

Married in the hippy era so wore a white wool slim fitting full length dress that mum crocheted for me. (With lining underneath for modesty!) Married in church. Going away dress same pattern, mini length in gold wool.

I'd love to see a photo sounds gorgeous!

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 18/04/2025 21:11

My friend wore a beautiful 1950’s style black dress with red shoes and lippy. She looked awesome!

Echobelly · 18/04/2025 21:09

I never thought much about what I'd wear for a wedding other than it was going to be a colour, not white, and I'd like an interesting headpiece. I'd seen a photo once of a celeb wedding where the bride wore a raspberry coloured dress and a dried-flower headdress and that gave me an idea that stuck with me.

Malbecmoron · 18/04/2025 21:03

I wore a pink trouser suit, felt amazing.

Echobelly · 18/04/2025 20:58

I wore a pale sapphire blue 3/4 length bridesmaid dress, a fascinator I had made to order and silver wedge sandals. I can't move nicely in full-length or large dresses, and am very pale and also clumsy and likely to spill things over something white and very expensive. For me, a big white dress would have felt like 'me dressed up as a bride' not 'me getting married'; they can look amazing and right on many other people, but just wouldn't have worked on me.

Had a 180-guest wedding, didn't have any negative comments, even from my very vocal and not-liking-unusualness MIL, about my dress.

No regrets at all about not wearing a big white dress (which I know is something some women worry about if they don't go for it)

Owlteapot · 18/04/2025 20:48

I wore a royal blue off the shoulder dress brought in the sale for about £25. Registery office wedding

Genevieva · 18/04/2025 20:33

PS back in the 30s my granny wore a silver dress. It became her ball dress for the next 20 years. Then it got cut up and turned into fabric for a quilt. So it lives on, almost a century later. And she looks amazingly fashionable in her black and white wedding photos, even now. Such a glam lady!

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 18/04/2025 20:33

I wore a very dark purple (almost black) evening dress.
