AIBU to think next door neighbour is being a Petty Patty over parking?

Hi Hivemind! AIBU to think that next door neighbour ( passive aggressive social worker) is being a Petty Patty by knocking on our door last night to complain that recycling and food recycling bins are placed over about 20% of the paved area that she states she owns between the passage/ driveway between our 2 houses. This passageway is an access to our garage and our other neighbour's garage. Long story short..she also complained about not being able to park outside her house yesterday as my partner's car was " taking up 2 car parking spaces" and he ought to park more considerately. FYI my partner moves his car onto my parking space to deter other road users from parking there during the day..so when I get home I can recharge my electric car under the kitchen window..not specifically to annoy Petty Patty next door...although it obviously has, as today she has backed up to within one millimeter of his car despite there being ample spaces on the road to park on..she parks in my ' spot'. She has also removed said bins from in front of partner's car in order to park in front..as I say within 1 mm of his front bumper! These were moved by me as a result of her complaining about where they were left. They are a 3 car household..we own 2..and I am out of the house from 7.30 - 5pm.
Now I am dreading going home as she is still parked there and partner has said he will go and knock on her door and demand she moves it if it's still there when I get home and need to charge my car for tomorrow..
First world problems I know..but is it just me?? What to do next??

I have so much to do today, but couldn’t resist coming back for a read of all the comments.
I would imagine the reason she now tells you about your bins is because she’s sick to the back teeth of you thinking that you own the road and is making it very clear to you that you do not own the piece of land where you’ve been putting your bins.
You don’t have a parking space, you have vehicle access to a road and if there is availability to park you may park there.
You don’t have any right to run a cable across a pavement and if somebody tripped over your cable, you may end up with no cable.
Using the expression petty patty is incredibly juvenile although I have a feeling you thought that it would make you sound amusing and likable.
You are wrong about pretty much everything it seems.

I think Petty Polly sounds better?

I don’t think OP will be back as I don’t think she’s had anyone agree with her!! Unusual to have a parking thread from this side of the argument!!

Why use names at all? Women's names that are used as a slur? Presumably you wouldn't like it if you were a Polly. Why not just "My neighbour is being petty"?

pictoosh · 18/04/2025 10:17

And why are you putting bins on the road??
The bins don't take priority over residents' parking...the bins aren't supposed to be in the road at all!

Get away with you.

pictoosh · 18/04/2025 10:13

Can't get over your dh using two spaces to reserve one for you, on a road that has unrestricted parking. That's insufferable.

Nextdoor55 · 18/04/2025 10:07

Oh no. Public road means public parking, no right to parking spaces for anyone.

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 18/04/2025 10:06

YABU for using "petty Patty". I've never heard of it and we really don't need another woman's name used like this.

IsItSnowing · 18/04/2025 10:03

You're putting your bins on her property and treating the public road like your private parking space. And you think your neighbour is unreasonable???

Popchipsrfab · 17/04/2025 16:00

Ok..well I moved the bins as I understand it needs to be left as access. She has taken 6 months to point out she owns the small piece of land between tbe houses..so I'm not sure why now it's suddenly an issue? No driveway to park on..and no one has ownership of any parking area as it is a public road. It is soon to be permit parking only anyway so in future we will have to pay for the priviledge of parking..or arguing about it.

Doesn't actually answer the question though does it? Why is your partner taking up 2 spaces? If it's a public road then there is no 'my spot' for either of you. You have no business purposely claiming any spot just to deter other people from parking there. This is what happens when people think they own the road outside their houses. I have neighbours who put bins and cones in the road to stop anyone else parking in what they seem to think is their personal parking space. I've even witnessed her throwing her cones at the bumper purposely trying to damage cars that had the audacity to park in her personal space. My other neighbour thinks they are just taking the piss and purposely puts their cones on the verge as soon as they drive off so other people can park there. You should see the look on their faces when the come home and find a random stranger dared to park in 'their' spot. They then sit at the window all day waiting to run outside and re claim the space when the random stranger goes. Last night my neighbours mate parked there and went away for the long weekend. Should be an interesting weekend 😂

PhatGurlSlim · 18/04/2025 09:28

Thank goodness you are not my neighbour.

ilovemyhamster · 18/04/2025 09:05

You're unreasonable to use a phrase so rude as passive aggressive social worker and 'Petty Patty'. Grow up

AthWat · 18/04/2025 09:02

This thread might as well just say "I consistently behave like an arsehole and I resent people pointing it out."

Ellie1015 · 18/04/2025 08:55

Your partner should never be taking 2 spaces that is beyond rude. He should park where you need to be then move to let you in to charge car and see what space is available.

Also rude to have bins on her area even if only 20% i suspect she wouldn't have done this had it not been as well as the parking issue.

A permit still won’t entitle you to park out side your house. It is to allow you to park on the road you live in. To be honest you sound like the neighbours from hell!

Viviennemary · 18/04/2025 07:56

Sound to me as if you are the unreasonable one here.

If she had complained straight away you'd have called her petty and said it's only one time. She's left it a while to see if you'll stop/check her rights and now you're complaining that she didn't say anything for 6 months.

YABU.

FigTreeInEurope · 18/04/2025 07:25

Could you not get a jack hammer, and dig up the public road to put in an underground cable? Then you could put in a socket on the pavement and maybe use cones, or even get some little bollards put in to reserve your space.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 18/04/2025 07:23

Twinstudy · 17/04/2025 15:44

So you leave your stuff on her land and park like a knob to reserve a space on a public road? I don't think your neighbour is the problem here.

This. And what does her job have to do with this?

olympicsrock · 18/04/2025 07:11

YABU . You don’t have a right to a space outside your house and shouldn’t rely on charging at home every night if you don’t have off street parking. Your DP parking to hog two spaces is a dick. I suspect your whole street despises this. If your car being outside your home is so important, why doesn’t DP park in that single spot, allow neighbour to also park up near her home and then if you arrive later , you switch and DP parks further away from the house alike others do.

What you are doing is equivalent to putting cones out on a public road to save spaces .

GRex · 18/04/2025 07:03

You sound a bit tricky to have as a neighbour. Bins should not be on shared accessways, it's good that you moved them but don't leave them there again. As for the parking, ask the council to add some charging points on the lampposts to add options. Madness for you all to have so many cars without a single dedicated parking space, but that's the house you've chosen so you have to take on board that you do not own them (and stop calling the spot "mine").

iloveeverykindofcat · 18/04/2025 06:54

"Petty Patty"

YABU for cursing me with the knowledge that this phrase exists.

UndermyShoeJoe · 17/04/2025 16:07

While we are here though op. Are you sure in your boro your allowed to have a cable running over a public footpath..

Petty patty here would report you for that just to find out 😉

A household up the road from me did this. An elderly chap tripped over the damn thing.
I understand the push towards EVs, but buying one when you don't have either a driveway so you can charge it off the road, or easy access to a public charging point, is nuts & inconsiderate of your neighbours imo.

ChompandaGrazia · 18/04/2025 06:37

You sound like a school bully. Keep your bins on your own property. Park with consideration and if it means you can’t charge your car then that isn’t her problem. I have an electric car but I wouldn’t do if I didn’t have a drive to park on with a proper charger. Draping a cable out of the window and across the pavement is a dick move.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 18/04/2025 06:31

You are also BVU to use the phrase "Petty Patty" FFS.

This is all the more reason not to park in two spaces.
