To ask if you actually like or respect your manager?

Because I don’t. At all.

Mine is full of it - constantly spinning things, avoiding accountability and making empty promises. I’ve tried to stay professional but I’m finding it harder to take her seriously and it’s affecting how I feel about my job overall. I’m already looking into new roles but just wondered how common is it to just not respect your manager?

AIBU to think it’s more normal than people admit?

He’s fabulous. And shit rolls uphill so his theory is that I am handling my stuff, unless I ask him, and he’s responsible too.

He expects hard work and loyalty. But when I felt there was an ethical issue (for me) and I told him I didn’t want to do something, he immediately did it himself. It needed done, I just wasn’t going to.

We have a pact that we’re retiring on the same day.

I’ve had a couple of astonishingly awful managers. But more good than bad.

I'm self-employed now but didn't respect my previous manager in the slightest. He was a nice person, but hated enforcing boundaries or telling people what to do.

I don’t particularly dislike him but he’s pretty useless. Plus side is that I also rarely ever hear from him!

Mostly, over my career, I have but not the last couple. Maybe it's my old age and lack of engagement, but I notice incompetence and lack of consideration in a way I don't think I did when I was younger.

My current manager is brilliant, to the point I'd class her as a friend now. But I've had some awful ones in the past. One was downright nasty and vindictive. Having a good or bad one can make a huge difference to how you feel about the job.

The one thing I've found is that awful managers are often aiming higher than their current role and somehow manage to get there! So you often don't have them for long.

No and No.
He's awful.

LavenderBlue19 · 17/04/2025 14:30

Yup, she's great - very good at her job and very hands off unless I need her. I've generally had very good managers. Bad ones make life a misery though.

JohnAmendAll · 17/04/2025 14:30

My answer is "yes" to both. She was a solicitor and I both liked and respected her.
