CIS

Just read an article about the Supreme Court judgement today. It repeatedly refers to Cis women. I get so unbelievably annoyed by that term.

I am not a ‘Cis’ woman. I just hate the term. If you want to be a trans woman, fine. That’s what you are. Don’t make me the other side of your imaginary coin. Don’t make me call myself something I’m not. Don’t make me part of your ‘We’re all just at various points on the woman spectrum’ nonsense.

There are women. And there are trans women. Two entirely different things.

Indeed. The law states that women are biological women. It is enough now that we have legal clarification to simply use the terms ‘woman’ and ‘trans woman’. ‘Cis’ needs to be expunged from the cultural vocabulary used by social media and academia.

I dont imagine your workplace is typical, so many use cis in training, definitions, policies, etc, without such qualification or consideration that it can be offensive.

I work in an adult education setting & we definitely do not use the term

Jellycatspyjamas · 17/04/2025 07:39

That’s hardly an impartial report, as an opinion piece it’s very clear where the author sits. He’s bending over backwards to say the judgement will make no difference, which makes you wonder why the Scottish government allowed it to go so far. Except it will make a significant difference to the rights of women, and he knows it.

You’re sourcing your news from the wrong places: all the mainstream media is using “biological” as per the judgement.

Seriously, today’s a day to celebrate, not get dragged back into all the old grievances.

No, i sourced it from The Guardian, but thanks for telling me where I got my article from. I didn’t link it because it’s so annoying, but here you go.

Of course you have no idea what kind of life the OP has led. Maybe she has had a serious illness and / or lost a loved one, maybe she’s a stay at home mother or an engineer or an athlete or a combination of all of these things.

Maybe she’s intelligent and able to care about many things all at once. I’m actually very sure of the last.

No, the term cis is literally the only thing in the entire world that bugs me. @ThatNimblePeer is totally right, and I commend her for both her perceptiveness and her contribution to the debate.
Before posting, I thought long and hard about global events, my own family, the difficulties large and small that I’ve had in my life. And you know what? I concluded that everything on planet Earth is totally wonderful and not worthy of comment except for this one thing.

Yes I can understand that. My feeling is that a man who was born male but now identifies as behind a woman is called a trans man rather than just a man or cis man, no?

Wrong. Trans-identifying male is a term used by some who recognise biological reality, but transactivists hate that term Transwoman was invented as the deliberately confusing term for such men. Transman = Trans-identifying female.

Willyoujustbequiet · 17/04/2025 02:50

Bogginsthe3rd · 17/04/2025 00:00

It sounds like other people would call you a cis woman then. You don't have to use that term.

No one need use CIS after today. We are just woman. And men who like to dress like women.

Absolutely this.

As Hadley Freeman said.... "women are women and transwomen are transwomen", which sums up the issue of terminology quite succinctly.

I'm wondering,..... what's the current ladies' lavatory setup at The Bridge and the RFH? Haven't been to either for a while.

I was put off at the Woolwich works and Glyndebourne with their labelling. G still won't reply to me as a member about this. I have been polite but have said that I expected to be consulted as a member and I hoped they were not enforcing these beliefs on staff without appropriate consultation.

No! Women are women and transwomen are men. They aren't another kind of woman at all, that nonsense is how we got to 'cis'.

There are only women and men. A flat-chested female in male-coded attire is a woman. I'll call her Bruce if she likes. She can call herself a man, a transman, a woman or a teapot. She's still a woman. Yesterday's ruling means that her choice of self-definition doesn't override reality.

And the reality is that there are no extra sexes in humanity, with or without prefixes.

NumberTheory · 17/04/2025 01:49

Just want to point out that the article you read may well have been hateful towards women, but the Supreme Court ruling itself does not refer to women in this manner at all and none of its findings can be applied to the group of biological women who also claim a female gender identity. Which makes the article’s use of the slur even less acceptable and gives more grounds for a complaint to the PCC if the publisher is a member.

You’ve led a very easy life if this is what bugs you.

You're being incredibly, incredibly naive.

That's how people end up "ruled" and "conquered". Being neutral and laissez faire under the #bekind guise.

You have to think long term. One step ahead. What's the ultimate goal ? Where is this leading ?

It's very plain , that "equality" is not the end goal here. If it was, we'd pretty much be kind of there (or as there as you can reasonably get) without compromising the needs of the majority.

First It's a request for one thing , then it ramps up, they want another thing, then more, then even more, then before you know it - here we are pretzling ourselves on calling only females "women" and allowing male criminals to apply some lippy and insert themselves into women's sports and prisons. Wake up! It's happening!

What next ? Women are no longer allowed to call themselves women ? They have to use another term Instead so that men can be called women ?..... Oh wait..... ( ciswomen) and bingo !!

This isn't just happening with the trans movement either. This is happening wide scale. Our way of life that has worked for millennia is coming to a close by today's standards - at this rate, we'll just all be bloody wiped out !

We must get balance back , equality should never progress to domination - from any group of people.

InfoSecInTheCity · 17/04/2025 00:13

Just to check my thinking on this,

it would be bad if I were to presume to know the gender identity of a TW, TM or NB person right? At least that’s what the message seems to be.

But it’s OK for others to presume to know that I have a gender identity and to call me cis, even if I don’t like that and don’t feel like I actually do have a gender identity, I know I’m a woman because I’m female, not because I feel like one. I have no idea what ‘a woman’ feels like, I just know what I feel like.

Is my understanding of this logic vacuum correct? I can’t presume to know other peoples gender identity, but they can presume to know mine.

Exactly that. It’s infuriating in its self-contradictory presumption.

FamousFriends · 17/04/2025 01:09

Bogginsthe3rd · 17/04/2025 00:17

I think then the would simply say that you were born a female and you are a woman because you feel that you are a woman. And probably only say this if that was offered up by yourself. It's more of a philosophical question of you being you. I think therefore I am.

No, you don't understand. You can't 'feel' like a woman, woman isn't a feeling, it's a neutral biological fact. There is no CIS woman, it's just woman. If you are born female and survive to adulthood you are a woman. It's not a philosophical question it has absolutely zero to do with what you think you are.

Foostit · 17/04/2025 01:07

Definitely not being unreasonable. I actually ticked other for gender on an application form because there was no female option, it was only ‘cis’ woman. As I object to that bullshit I refused to tick that option. I wrote female in the box as well. I think the ruling today is a positive step in addressing this utter bollocks! I also get annoyed by people adding pronouns to their email signature, it’s especially pointless when it’s women putting she/her. 🙄

snackatack · 17/04/2025 01:06

I hate when intersex is brought up - its less than 0.05 of the population and 0.01% are not given a gender (male/female) at birth

Compared to the 49.6% female population!

I don't accept being called a cis-woman - I am a woman - I have experienced, sexism, assault , gender inequality - it is part of my 'constructed reality'.

Respecting trans people should not mean redefining my experiences.

It is the use of 'woman' for men who wear nappies, or flash their bits, or commit sexual assault then claim they are women so they can get into a women prison - the tiny number of men using 'trans' as excuse for their shoddy behaviour.. = I honestly feel more men should be shouting about these men - but they don't. They harm life for trans people as well as for women.

Out of interest what about people who are intersex at birth? What would you say to them ?

That's really offensive and shows ignorance from you.

Intersex people are being dragged into the umbrella rainbow to suit an agenda to strengthen the "them and us " the more "us" they add to the alphabet, the stronger the voice.

Intersex people are either male or female, just like 100% of all humans that ever lived. Genitalia may not look uniform , and there may be other internal differences with their reproductive anatomy. But they are still male or female and tests can prove this. They're not a third sex category.

I think it's bloody offensive to drag intersex people into an idealogical agenda.

One is a medical diagnosable physical condition. The other is a snowballed movement based on a theory. (That harms women and children as it happens )

Intersex people don't stop women being women and I don't think it's fair to drag them into discussions that feature made up ideologies.

This.

I also have some empathy for the small miniscule teeny weeny number of people with true dysphorias, but I don't feel I need to buy into the whole subculture around it . I don't want to oppress or discriminate against them but I am not turning myself inside out over what words or pronouns to use. I accept that if I had a child who identified as trans or NB I might feel differently. But I do think genuine dysphorias, as opposed to identity angst, (didn't we all struggle with lacking a sense of self at that age?it's a normal albeit painful part of growing up) are rare. I know 3 trans people, one I think may be truly dysphoric, the others I think are just non conforming .
