To ask if you have a velcro cat?

I have a 7 year old female cat who I love, she's got a very gentle and affectionate nature however she is incredibly clingy.

She has outdoor access but only goes out if the weather is warm, and even then it's a couple of hours at most. She was out this morning but was meowing to come in after 10 minutes.

She likes to sit on my lap and sit next to me at all times and be petted at all times, which is lovely usually but occasionally I feel I need a break. She has toys, cat tv and so on.

Occasionally I just shut myself in my bedroom, she cries at the door for a bit but eventually stops. I can't afford a second cat, I mean yes I can afford food etc. But living on my own I can't afford two lots of insurance, pet sitter fees and vet bills.

Has anyone found other techniques for their cat? It can be tricky if i WFH too.

Yes, one of mine is a total Velcro cat in the evenings. He will follow me about until I sit and then won’t leave my lap all night. I get glared at as well if I dare to not fuss him. He moans and groans if I need to move as he’s made my legs go to sleep. He will sometimes sit with DH, but I’m the favourite bed.

Luckily during the day he’s learnt not to bother me to much if I’m WFH. He will poke me a few times but if I ignore him he will usually wander off. If he’s too much he has to be shut out of the office though, so he’s learnt to sit near me and not disturb me if he wants to stay in the room.

His favourite nighttime place is my side of the bed, so most nights I find myself bending around where he has decided to sleep, which is usually as close to me as he can physically get.

Tonight DH has been making a lego model and the cat is fascinated by that, so I’ve had a few hours respite, but DH has now finished and the cat is now on me again!

Mine are indoor cats with a catio, but we allow supervised garden access at the weekends, DH is the one who suffers then as the cat will follow him everywhere until DH takes them out. Oh and he is partial to attending to his bathroom needs at the same time as us as well.

I think he learnt his behaviour from our first cat. She didn’t sit on me until she was 7, but then she was a total Velcro cat. She liked to sleep on my pillow at night, waking to a furry bum was always fun. She was 10 when he came along, so he watched her behaviour.

Having more cats hasn’t made him less Velcro, we had 4 together and they all liked a fuss, but he still wanted the most. He’d create a fuss to move the others away from me so he could get on me.

His brother luckily isn’t a Velcro cat. He likes a fuss, but after a short while he will wander off. Although his weird preference is to be squished. He likes me to literally lay on him and he’s been known to dive behind us as we sit down hoping we squash him. Luckily he’s a big boy, so squishing him never hurts him.

Basically cats are all weird, but I wouldn’t be without them

This is 3am at my place.
Our oldest cat cries if we go up to bed without carrying him up too. He waits at the door for us if we leave the house.
Try leaving some dry food out overnight for your cat. Mine all wait for the alarm before they start jumping on our heads.

wish that was my cat - she really isn't a lap cat, only likes short cuddles, bit clingy when I'm going out with an in built sensor of when I'm running late.
Laptop cat maybe - loves nothing better than plonking herself on the laptop.

Overtheatlantic · 16/04/2025 20:59

How many of us are awake at 3am due to spring boarding cats?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/04/2025 20:53

MaleCat hangs round DD like a cheap suit
FemaleCat "helps" when DH is WFH
They tolerate DS
Far from velcro with me they areTeflon and don't even TRY to hide their indifference

Cats don't tend to get ill all the time like dogs do. I've never had a cat insured and never had a cast sitter if we go away. They just need someone to come in and feed them twice a day.

I do really recommend insurance for cats. My 1 yr old got FIP and the treatment cost 10k…luckily insurance covered it

Imgonnapopsometags · 16/04/2025 20:44

I don't mind mine sleeping on my bed at all until she decides to use me as a springboard at 3am and give me the shock of my life.
Or licks my face to check if I'm still alive.

I do and we have to negotiate about where he can sit when I'm doing certain things
And by that I mean I contort myself so I can still type when he's decided he's sitting ON me not next to me.
However he has always been shut downstairs at night since he was a kitten so accepts this and I get some space then. Would find it difficult otherwise.

My mum has just lost her gorgeous little Velcro boy and I’m heartbroken. Whenever I visited he liked to Velcro himself to my head with his paws on my face - the problem was he’d do this when I slept - and if I moved he’d dig his claws into my face as if to say “stay right where you fucking are I’m cosy” 🤣 I used to have to call “Muuuuum! Mum! Can you get Elliot off my head please?” Like a frightened child 😂 and if she was snoring away like a water buffalo I’d be fucked. sadly stupid DH is highly allergic to cats. Considering rehoming the DH to get the cat.

Imgonnapopsometags · 16/04/2025 20:42

Regarding cat sitters i sadly don't have anyone close enough who would just come in and feed her. Family live an hour's drive away and don't really have close friends here.
I do have a friend who's a pet sitter so I pay her to come in.

My cat adores me and spends as much time as she can with me. I am very flattered by her loyalty and love the affection.

Madam here is 100% velcro. I work from home and she is by my side the whole time. I have another cat who Is three and they get on fine but it hasn't changed her at all.
Velcro cat is the white tabby. Eve the black cat longs to cuddle with tabby but tabby prefers her human. The look of longing on Eve's face says it all.

We have a house full of velcro cats.
Useful for getting other people to do stuff for you while pleading "I can't move, I'm incapussitated".

I need to go out in five minutes...

That's the law in our house; if the cat's on you, you're excused.

She's not really a velcro cat; she was not handled as a kitten by the first people who had her. So to start with she didn't want to be touched or near us at all. She's nine now and we're very much her people, but all fussing and being sat on is on her terms.

If I were you I'd set aside time daily to play with her with wand toys and so on, give her a proper period of undivided attention. You might be able to get some peace for a bit if she can expect some intense play periodically. You'll need to train her to expect cat-free times, it'll be hard at first but she'll get used to it when it's more routine.

I do wish I'd started getting ours sleeping downstairs or just somewhere NOT on me overnight, it would be distressing to impose this on her now, but I do get much better sleep on holiday when she's in the cattery...

Mum2jenny · 16/04/2025 20:04

My Velcro pet is a dog, however she has more cat tendencies than dog ones

CheeseWisely · 16/04/2025 19:50

Mine is like this and he’s an indoor (by his own choice) so there’s no let-up. If anything he’s got worse since DS came along because there are times he CAN’T be on me, so he wants to be at literally every other opportunity. It’s annoying but in our case he’s 15 and in sketchy health so I remind myself I’ll miss it when he’s gone!

Overtheatlantic · 16/04/2025 19:08

Yes but only partially. I’ve been ordered upstairs for cuddles, outside for walks in the garden, and to get off my phone to give her a fuss. She sleeps on my hip. I accept it because she gives so much in return and it’s an honour to be loved by her.

TheDandyLion · 16/04/2025 16:27

Yes, but mine is just a heat thief. She buggers off if its warm and lolls about in the direct sun but on days like today she'll be on my lap and following me around the house shouting at me to sit down so she can sit down.

Cryingatthegym · 16/04/2025 16:22

Yes I've got one of these. She's more like a puppy than a cat. I don't have any solutions though, that's just how she is and we accept it!

Sometimes when I'm exhausted and touched out by the kids at the end of the day I do get a bit irritated and shoo her away, but she just goes to get her fuss from DD10 if I do that!

Onionbhajisandwich · 16/04/2025 15:46

I do and to be honest I love it. She’s my first baby and she’s 18 now so I’m making the most of the time that I have left with her.

I just can't financially commit to a second cat sadly, I live alone and have no financial support. Also worried they may not get on.

Ive just shut the door for a little bit and she's outside crying.

Getting another cat is unlikely to help tbh, cats aren't pack animals like dogs, they are solitary creatures and rarely take happily to a strange new cat being imposed on them. The only time I've had two cats get on well together was because they were brother and sister and together from birth. I have an

intermittent velcro cat, in that she will leave me alone for a few hours but then has the urge to climb up and 'knead' on me for about ten minutes every couple of hours. If I'm not immediately available for this (behind a closed door etc) she will yowl loudly and scratch at the door for a good 20 mins. If I'm nearby and just not giving attention she'll claw at my legs gently for a reaction.
