Can I choose how my bridemaids have their hair?

Genuine question, getting married and want my bridemaids to all have the same hair - all of their hair is long so it'll be easy but one has a thick fringe and would it be rude if I asked her to have a hairstyle that clips it back? I want them all to have their hair like this but unsure how it'll work with a full fringe? AIBU?

I think you can suggest it and see how they feel (the fringe thing is a no-no though), but you can’t enforce it. Essentially you want to disguise their own sense of self and present them as you fembots? It is weird and controlling, but by all means ask them.

PrimalLass · 16/04/2025 14:15

I would feel horrible and uncomfortable all day if I had to clip my fringe back.

sheknowsitstoolate · 16/04/2025 14:14

I bet the bridesmaids are excited for this wedding if this post is anything to go by!

If one of them had glasses would you make her take the off for the day if you didn’t like them?

EcoChica1980 · 16/04/2025 14:09

I would fucking hate someone telling me how to do my own hair.

SolielMoonSky · 16/04/2025 14:07

When my sister got married she wanted me and the other bridesmaids to have “beach-y, tousled waves” and sent photos of examples of hair do’s to then style them in.
I genuinely laughed out loud.
I have lots of hair but it’s extremely fine, and curly and it turns to uncontrollable frizz randomly depending on the weather (or its mood). I’m very limited when it comes to using products because I have severe psoriasis on my scalp.
Dsis has completely different hair type and wouldn’t accept when I said my hair simply won’t do that.
Even a professional stylist couldn’t get my hair the way she wanted it and to stay that way.
Expecting bridesmaids to have the exact same hair on the day is a bit unreasonable and probably a waste of energy trying to control things down to this level of detail.

Everyone’s kicking off at the OP, but my bride is asking us all to have the same hairstyle by the hairstylist - and getting us to pay for it!!

I think clipping a full fringe back (aside from looking utterly ridiculous) is a big ask and beyond just having your hair put up within your normal style. The fringe thing goes beyond that.

Having said that, I think the need to have identical hairstyles on grown women generally is ridiculous. In real life I don’t know any women who didn’t just say to their bridesmaids “choose what makes your feel beautiful”? I’ve never gone to a wedding in real life and gone “my goodness thank god the bridesmaids are identical”.

CandyCane457 · 16/04/2025 14:05

I don’t think it’s rude, silly or unreasonable to ask them if they’d all like the same hairstyle.
Assuming you’re paying for a pro to do it and not expecting them to try and do it themselves?
The girl with the fringe…chat to her and see what she thinks, if she’d rather her fringe wasn’t clipped back, she could still leave it down and have her hair that way?
Im sure they’ll all look lovely!

madaboutpurple · 16/04/2025 14:04

I think your bridesmaids would prefer to choose their own styles. I doubt there is going to be a style that jointly suits them all. Realistically you sound very controlling. i am glad I am not one of your bridesmaids! How would you feel if someone imposed that rule on you. I expect you would not like it. If I was your bridesmaid I would resign if you did that to me. You might find no one wants the task.

You don’t have to do it though do you ?

Nope!

You don't have to agree to it....

1000%

I really think the desire to control every little aspect will take away the enjoyment of what essentially is your day. You need to chill.

No they are all having different dresses, some floral, some plain pastel. So there will be individuality. Just not sure what hairstyle would suit a very thick fringe

Her normal hairstyle.

GreatCyanCrab · 16/04/2025 13:57

Other than the fringe clipping I don’t think it’s abnormal to tell your bridesmaids how you’d like their hair to be. It definitely does not make you a bridezilla!

When I was a bridesmaid the bride gave us two options and we went from there. Easy peasy.

Lemonyyy · 16/04/2025 13:55

I used to have a very thick fringe and the skin underneath was terrible. I would’ve been very upset and self conscious if you asked, so tread carefully here and ask at your own risk!

Miaowzabella · 16/04/2025 13:52

Well, you can ask....but any bride who asked me to clip my fringe back would find herself a bridesmaid short.

If you’ve got different dresses why does it matter if someone has a fringe or not?

cheddercherry · 16/04/2025 13:47

Such a rude request but brides these days seem to think they can dictate their bridesmaids every move and thought so I guess go for it if you don’t care much for the friendship? I can’t imagine how you’d say to her face that she should pin her fringe back basically for your “aesthetic” without her feeling like you obviously think negatively about how she looks. Personally it would make me self conscious to not have a fringe and I’d probably say if I need to alter my entire look to suit your wedding then I’d rather not be a bridesmaid, it’s all just way too self absorbed and high pressure.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 16/04/2025 13:45

@walliceandme r u really a bridezilla???

TimeForABreak4 · 16/04/2025 13:44

If you're paying you can ask if they are happy to have it the same. I paid and just let mine choose. I always think bridesmaids with the exact same hair with the same dress looks a bit daft personally

Whoarethoseguys · 16/04/2025 13:42

If you want them all to have a particular hairstyle then I think you need to pay for a hairdresser to do it you tell them what style you want and then expect them to do it themselvesI'm not sure what a thick fringe pinned back would look like though.
Personally I think it's best to let them decide themselves how they want their hair based on what they think suits them and makes them feel comfortable

caringcarer · 16/04/2025 13:39

If your paying you could suggest it and see how bridesmaid feels about it.

RaspberryBeretxx · 16/04/2025 13:38

I don't think you can ask her to do that. Presumably she has her fringe because she likes it like that. I guess it depends whether she always has it or regularly changes her hair anyway and it's a temporary thing. In any case, I think that hairstyle would work perfectly with a thick fringe - something like this? I think it'd also work fine if the fringe was less soft and more blunt. Just do the soft bun at the back and let the fringe do it's own thing.
