Can I choose how my bridemaids have their hair?

Genuine question, getting married and want my bridemaids to all have the same hair - all of their hair is long so it'll be easy but one has a thick fringe and would it be rude if I asked her to have a hairstyle that clips it back? I want them all to have their hair like this but unsure how it'll work with a full fringe? AIBU?

If you've a hairdresser on site to do that then I don't see why not, but you shouldn't make people pin back their fringes or straighten their hair unless they want to. I guess not everyone will look the same even with the same style.

It's very dependent on what the person's hair looks like normally and how they are comfortable styling it to look their best.

You couldn't ask someone to do their own hair that way as many people wouldn't be able to. I'm awful at hair but would happily accept a stylist doing it like that. Because it would suit my hair length and type.

Your wedding will not be affected in any way by a fringe!
Is this for real?

WilfredsPies · 16/04/2025 11:59

It’s not rude to ask them to wear their hair in a certain style (and I mean ask, not tell).
It would be very rude to ask your BM to clip her fringe back. And clipped back hair would look far sillier with that style than a fringe would.

Nobody is going to be paying any attention to the BMs. I think you’re on the verge of tipping over from ‘reasonable person who wants everything to look lovely’ territory, into ‘the napkins have to match the bridesmaids knickers or the whole wedding will be ruined’ territory.

Daringdarlingholly · 16/04/2025 11:59

If you pay for them to have their hair done it's fine to have an idea of what style however it would be stupid to say they would clip their fringe back. Fringes don't really work like that, it wouldn't necessarily blend in with the hairstyle and some people have them to balance their face shape or hide behind even!

Sahara123 · 16/04/2025 11:58

I think it would be rude and very samey. Are they all having the same style of dress as well, it’s all a bit clone like I think. I’d just want them to be comfortable, I’ve known a couple of bridesmaids recently who’ve felt very uncomfortable in a dress they had no say over, obviously they didn’t say anything but they felt quite self conscious .

Rusalina · 16/04/2025 11:58

Aside from all else, I think a thick fringe can look very odd pinned back - speaking as an ex thick-fringe haver here. I think the hairstyle would look better with the fringe, surely?

ThejoyofNC · 16/04/2025 11:58

It's fine for you to choose the hairstyle, as long as you pay for it.

As for the fringe, no I wouldn't be asking someone to pin it back. Firstly because it looks shit and always ends up poking back out. Second because a lot of people have a full fringe because they don't like their forehead etc, why would you want to make her uncomfortable?

Littlebluepenguins · 16/04/2025 11:58

Perhaps some sort of small hair accessory that they all have the same will bring everything together despite one person having a fringe ?

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 16/04/2025 11:57

Why on earth do you want to control every aspect to this extent? I’d imagine it would probably make her feel uncomfortable the whole day. Aren’t bridesmaids usually people you care about?!

Flamingoknees · 16/04/2025 11:56

She presumably has a fringe because she feels she suits it/needs it/feels confident with it. These are individual real life people we are talking about, not dress up dollies.
It's highly unlikely that one hairstyle will suit all - I'd hate to be the one it didn't suit.

Octonopes · 16/04/2025 11:56

I have a thick fringe because I have a scar on my forehead (I'm not Harry Potter, honest) so I'd be very self conscious to be asked to do this

I'm certain that updo looks nice with a fringe

Have a lovely wedding 🙂

BogRollBOGOF · 16/04/2025 11:55

Clipping back a fringe would look silly.

Complimentary styles are fine where viable (by hair length, type), but bridesmaids look best when they retain some of their own individuality and feel comfortable rather than trying to clone them.

Iamaverysillyperson · 16/04/2025 11:51

Yes, it would be rude and strange.

Agree.

LolaJ87 · 16/04/2025 11:54

YWBU. I look weird with my fringe pulled back, and even when I've grown it out I've had some face framing pieces, which your bridesmaid won't have with her fringe clipped back. Allow people some small token of their individuality in what suits them as a person.

frontwoman001 · 16/04/2025 11:54

Okay, hair issued sorted now, I think? That style would look perfectly fine with a fringe.

Next order of business - uncle Benjamin has a big, thick mustache and we're serving soup. Would it be unreasonable of me to ask him to shave off his mustache for the day?

luckylavender · 16/04/2025 11:54

It's very Bridezilla

pizzaHeart · 16/04/2025 11:53

AnotherHappyCamper · 16/04/2025 11:50

It's rude and also very silly.

This^

ThatTwinklyPearlSloth · 16/04/2025 11:53

YABU. I really don’t think anyone will notice how your bridesmaids have their hair. I’d be more concerned that they feel happy and confident in themselves.

Bushmillsbabe · 16/04/2025 11:53

You can suggest a hairstyle and ask then if they would be happy with it, but you cannot insist on it.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 16/04/2025 11:52

Sure you can, Bridezilla! 👍

VickyEadieofThigh · 16/04/2025 11:52

Really? I think you're somewhat obsessed by minutiae of this one day.

Hoppinggreen · 16/04/2025 11:52

Why would you want to?
They are all individuals and like/suit different things. I would say them being happy and comfortable is more important than them all looking the same in photos

Crispyapple · 16/04/2025 11:51

I think it’s fine to ask to have the hair in a certain style - I asked my bridesmaids to have theirs in an updo as the back of the dresses was a focal point. But I think asking to pin a fringe back may be too far - I think a fringe would like fine with that style anyway 😊

Agix · 16/04/2025 11:51

That would look fine with a fringe. You should chill out a little.

Iamaverysillyperson · 16/04/2025 11:51

Yes, it would be rude and strange.
