Hi!
Ok so I moved into a house 3 months ago not ventured outside to play and our new garden is being done next week as its not fir to use. Today 2nd day of easter holidays I took my 3 year old and 8 year old round the block on their scooters. I was round the back of one of the neighbours houses she lives 3 doors away and which backs onto a public cul de sac type street. I was out with them for 5 mins when the woman comes from her house and shouts that she needs my children to stop and they're trying to eat their dinner (it was 2.50pm) and all they can here is THAT (pointed to my children) and tbey need to stop and move away. She was sat in her conservatory with the doors open ypu can just make put from over the fence.
At that point my 3 year old scooted off near the road so I ran after her but didn't really know what to say.
I started taking a video of them playing and have them playing on video for 4 mins before she came out. They were literally just talking and saying how bumpy the pavement was etc and laughing as they went over drain bumps. They weren't shouting or anything and i was next to them the whole time.
It reeeeeally upset me as someone who tried to do good by people. But now I'm just filled with anger towards her and wish I'd have bit back.
Orrrrrrr shluld I have just said sorry it was my bad doing?

I just cannot believe how nasty some people are, what a beast of a person to speak to you like that. Round where I live we only have tiny back yards so hardly any play space for children so they are out on the street on their bikes or kicking a ball around. The noise of the ball does irritate me, but they are kids playing so I put up with it, after all they are outdoors playing which is good. She bloody needs to live next door to the horrors I have to put up, shouting, yelling, drug dealing, back yard like a scrap heap and rubbish everywhere then she would have something to moan about.

Getthebag2023 · 17/04/2025 19:15

The same cranky old fools that shout at children for playing outside or playing football in a cul de sac etc are the same arseholes who will complain that children in their day played out, and that kids these days spend too much time on screens. Ignore her!

dcthatsme · 17/04/2025 19:13

She sounds unhinged. I can imagine she’s done this to other neighbours too. I think you have to keep on taking your little ones on the public street and not let her stop you. If you can stay calm I’d say to her you have every right to be outside on the street in broad daylight and she will have to live with it.

How exactly do children being outside on the street prevent anyone from eating their dinner?

Ignore and don't apologise, you've done nothing wrong and people like that will just take an apology as an admission of guilt.

It doesn't but in extreme cases can detract from the enjoyment.

No children near me but when I was away last week I loved hearing children play.
Some people are just bloody miserable. Don’t let this woman dictate to you and your children.

asrl78 · 17/04/2025 19:01

Ask the neighbour to come and live with me for six months, with my neighbour's kids screeching away outside when playing and the other neighbour's dog periodically barking because someone dared to walk past the house on the pavement, she will get a dose of reality.

Lourdes12 · 17/04/2025 19:01

I would have said "I didn't know we had moved to grumpy land but now that I know hopefully we can bring some joy and laughter"

Onelifeonly · 17/04/2025 19:00

I think the fact you didn't react at all was the best of all possible responses. To get angry or become apologetic are emotional reactions which might well invite further abuse. Appearing to not be bothered is far more powerful.

ZepherinDrouhin · 17/04/2025 19:00

Ignore the silly cow, she doesn't own the street.

My friend had a similar experience & one day she exploded at the neighbours after a particularly petty episode. My friend said all she could hear was them having sex really loudly at all hours. When she saw the expression on the guys face, she realised it wasn't him she heard having sex with his wife...!!

So if the neighbours weren't arseholes then the wife's infidelity wouldn't have been discovered! The incident delighted all the neighbours as the couple were known for being arseholes! Fingers crossed something similar happens and they get their arses handed on a plate!

You have a middle finger for a reason op.

Ariel896 · 17/04/2025 18:55

She’s a blow hard to the nth degree! Like PP said at least she isn’t your actual neighbour

BethDuttonYeHaw · 17/04/2025 18:55

I don’t think it’s necessary to bring age into this thread. The age of neighbours
is irrelevant.

Messycoo · 17/04/2025 18:54

CanI ask, if they are older neighbours in their 70’s /80’s ?
Don’t be angry, although I would be feel the same way !!!!
you have done nothing wrong and don’t be put off by her ranting .
kill her with kindness and offer her to come over for a cuppa, as you would love to meet new neighbours, turn it around.
don’t over think it, she was having a moment !
keep us posted. As the book says “let them” !
hugs for you.

ASimpleLampoon · 17/04/2025 18:53

Your children have a right to be outside playing. Give them an airing horn and a vuvuzelas and take them out again.

pictoosh · 17/04/2025 18:51

Don't give in to her self-appointed policing of the street. As soon as you do she'll assume she has authority over you and others using the street in a normal manner.
She can fuck off. Go back with the scooters tomorrow.

I would have ignored her and carried on especially if the children weren’t making an obscene amount of noise, sounds like she’s just a bad tempered old bat

Nikki75 · 17/04/2025 18:42

Hey you've done nothing at all except take your children out for some fresh air .. she owes you an apology, just be ready for her next time and tell her not to speak to you like that again.
She is that neighbour !!

Swishytwip · 17/04/2025 18:32

Fwiw I'm currently an inpatient on a psych ward and your lovely neighbour sounds more unwell than any of the patients here! This is a her problem, not a you and your kids problem.

I love this!

I hope your recovery goes smoothly.

MyVIsForVendetta · 17/04/2025 18:40

Im the QUEEN of hating sounds.

The sound of kids scooting over a drain would
be like nails down a blackboard for me.

However, it’s a public space, they are children, they are playing.
I would be a cunt to tell someone that I didn’t like the sound of their kids scooting up and down.

Therefore, your neighbour is a cunt.

LlynTegid · 17/04/2025 18:37

At about 3pm in the afternoon, nothing wrong at all. I'd understand unhappiness at 7 or 8am in the morning, or even 8pm at night, but not in the daytime.

LeaCFBC · 17/04/2025 18:36

I've got a nasty 80 year old man 2 doors down from me . The number of times in the 12 years I've lived here, he has insulted and verbally abused me must be over 20.

I've never taken it personally, or retaliated,or allowed him to affect me. I just completely ignore him. Because it's all about him and his miserable bitterness. It's actually nothing to do with me. Same with your nasty neighbour. These people thrive on confrontation. They love to know you're upset by them. Totally ignore them.

Just pity them, and always think it could be so much worse...you could be like them 🤣.

Pippyls67 · 17/04/2025 18:34

Don’t get involved in any argy with her whilst your Dcs are around. It’s unsettling for them. Sod her though. Miserable baggage. Shes got big big problems I’ll bet you. Feel smug not hurt. At least you’re not living her tragic, pathetic, bitter little life!

CornishIrish · 17/04/2025 18:33

She sounds like a miserable prick with a complete lack of manners. Ignore, move on, let her live in her oversensitive misery.
