Hi!
Ok so I moved into a house 3 months ago not ventured outside to play and our new garden is being done next week as its not fir to use. Today 2nd day of easter holidays I took my 3 year old and 8 year old round the block on their scooters. I was round the back of one of the neighbours houses she lives 3 doors away and which backs onto a public cul de sac type street. I was out with them for 5 mins when the woman comes from her house and shouts that she needs my children to stop and they're trying to eat their dinner (it was 2.50pm) and all they can here is THAT (pointed to my children) and tbey need to stop and move away. She was sat in her conservatory with the doors open ypu can just make put from over the fence.
At that point my 3 year old scooted off near the road so I ran after her but didn't really know what to say.
I started taking a video of them playing and have them playing on video for 4 mins before she came out. They were literally just talking and saying how bumpy the pavement was etc and laughing as they went over drain bumps. They weren't shouting or anything and i was next to them the whole time.
It reeeeeally upset me as someone who tried to do good by people. But now I'm just filled with anger towards her and wish I'd have bit back.
Orrrrrrr shluld I have just said sorry it was my bad doing?

Again, this is why so many people on Mn struggle with basic relationships with other people, and lurch from chronic self-effacement, appeasement, and people-pleasing to insane levels of aggression and passive-aggression, under the impression it’s ‘standing up for myself’.

Well said

OP, there are plenty of miserable cunts around. Once you’ve aged a decade or two, you will have encountered many of them.

Next time, tell this cunt that children playing is a perfectly normal and reasonable thing and to leave you alone.

Why would you talk to anyone like that?

Tricho · 18/04/2025 04:56

Kill her op

It's the only way.

Gimpee · 18/04/2025 04:00

It's stressful having neighbour disputes, my neighbours who moved in 3 years ago used my garden for scaffolding without consent, built extension and damaged garden even put building materials into garden again didn't ask me still got 3ft whole on my side where they dug foundations. I loved living here now I hate it

My neighbour is like this. We have a shared alley way, but she begrudges me using it. She will even try and stop my parcels being delivered. She has a miserable face continuously and is very bitter. I used to get angry, but now just realise it's a her problem, not a me problem. You are just hurting yourself by being angry. Just smile and laugh and be happy with your children. That will really p her off. This was most likely the trigger in the first place. "What? Someone happy? Not on my watch sonny!" And came to burst your bubble. I would even smirk and shake your head if she ever looks your way in future.

"That sounds like a you problem" is what I always say when someone has a complaint to make... Or if I'm really indifferent I just say "So?!" To anything they say... It's liberating as hell, OP should try it. What she got to lose? Some reputation with the neighborhood bitch? Oh no, p-p-please don't think less of me😂

That would annoy me and make me want to buy a moped to drive up and down the street all day.

A two-stroke one that goes "NREEEEEE!!!!!"

@ReadingSoManyThreads You know you sound ridiculous ? Outside your house for 5 minutes would disturb you? So you think people should be silent when OUTSIDE your house . And intrigued to know what kind of scooters make such abominable noise . You are exactly the kind of narky neighbour that makes me laugh . Maybe you should move onto a vast estate - oh wait you can't afford it , so bought in an area where other people are entitled to live . Shudder away ..

Be thankful you don't suffer from misophonia!

And no, I certainly do not think people should be silent outside my house, but it's inconsiderate to linger making annoying noise. For example, there is a dog trainer who holds training classes on the other side of my garden fence, they are an hour long and often she'll have a barky dog who will bark for the whole session. The trainer herself has an incredibly loud voice (talks like she's shouting), even when she does the training in the park behind my house, rather than by my garden fence, I can still hear her voice from 200 metres away - not even exaggerating.

I'm not actually a "narky neighbour", I get on very well with all of my neighbours actually, it's the general noisy public I despise 😂😂😂

You also shouldn't make incorrect assumptions on my financial situation, not that it's any of your business but I actually come from a family who had an incredible amount of land.

Gimpee · 17/04/2025 23:47

Lots of properties have small conservatory on front if it captures sun there is no set rule where they should be placed at coast they are more than often at front

Gimpee · 17/04/2025 23:39

We all need to respect our neighbours it's exceptionally hard for different age groups, older people tend to like peace, teenagers mostly a pain and younger children can be loud. It's impossible when no respect I got new neighbours 3 years ago they built extension came into my garden destroyed my plants put building materials in garden without permission when I told them no they just ignored me dug big hole in my garden for their foundations and still not fixed after two years. The day I came out of hospital they were drilling the next day. They told me to get used to it.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 17/04/2025 23:23

Miserable gits

Gimpee · 17/04/2025 23:22

Surely goldfish aren't that noisy lol

BornSandyDevotional · 17/04/2025 23:16

Middleagedstriker · 17/04/2025 22:45

God if this bothered you as a one off you really, really, really need a life.

Who has a conservatory where a porch should be? And no garden seemingly. Bizarre!

BornSandyDevotional · 17/04/2025 23:13

I have three conservatories. One at the back one at the side and one at the front.

I just absolutely love glass. And lean-tos.

Occasionally, I might have a morning coffee in the front conservatory (upgraded porch).

But never me dinner.

And that's despite my gaining virtual ownership of cul-de-sac planning rights after a particularly lurid works do (say no more) in 1996.

I was young and attractive.

I was surprised that, even under the circumstances, I was allowed to extend my porch right to the edge of the pavement.

Particularly as I live in a Victorian terrace!

I've always enjoyed the children scooting by. Pushing their grubby little faces against the glass.

Like noisy goldfish bubbling for food.

I would recommend calling the police on your neighbour immediately.

Gimpee · 17/04/2025 23:07

Older people get set in there ways, they don't like noise especially from children, barking dogs, traffic or change. Are you only one with young children? I would speak with other neighbours to find out what she like could be a moaner, horrible or ill. Find out first then decide on way forward.

kurotora · 17/04/2025 23:02

It sounds like this can only be remedied by investing in kazoos for both your children, to provide a soothing soundtrack to their scooting instead of nasty childish laughter.

Be sure to visit every day for the rest of the holidays so neighbour can see how seriously you’ve taken her upset and the steps you’ve taken to solve the problem. 👍

Don't fall out with her if you own your own house though. You have to declare neighbour disputes if you want to sell.

Only if it gets reported to the council I thought - but yes wise to avoid either party reporting it..

Middleagedstriker · 17/04/2025 22:45

BoldBlueZebra · 17/04/2025 20:02

Who takes their kids to play outside someone else’s house - if you’re scooting about on your way to somewhere totally not a problem but if you’ve gone out of your way take the kids to play there and don’t live there why would you think that’s ok

God if this bothered you as a one off you really, really, really need a life.

Mumble12 · 15/04/2025 21:45

You sound nice.

Lisachooky · 17/04/2025 22:04

Try to keep yourself and the children away from her for the time being. Sadly these days there's so many folk who are less tolerant ,once you've got your garden done things will improve, and they and you will enjoy your own space, however you have every right to take your children for a walk, play in the park if there is one.if it's a small community ,chances are you may come across her, but if you feel you need to speak to her,do it on a one to one without your children present.good luck.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/04/2025 21:26

I'd much rather your kids playing than my neighbour's kid and his fucking basketball thudding away all afternoon! If it's like last year it'll be constant all summer and I'm sure could be used as a form of torture.

DreamTheMoors · 17/04/2025 21:23

I looove old hags like this. I would’ve said:
”Excuse me? Would you repeat that? I couldn’t hear you over my children having fun.”

Theroadt · 17/04/2025 20:39

My isual reaction is to smile, wave and say cheerily “hi there! “ and if she persists: “sorry, I’m hearing impaired” with nice smile and then just carry on, cheerfully. She won’t be able to get past that. If you get cross, she’s won. Enjoy your new home!

101Nutella · 17/04/2025 20:27

Omg children are people too!! They are allowed to exist and take up space in public!

keep living your life but be prepared you all have to tackle this at some point I would expect. I think she’ll do it again .

NCembarassed · 17/04/2025 20:22

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 16/04/2025 07:15

youve done nothing wrong OP.

we have some really loud squealy kids down our road, it can be annoying when you’re sat in the garden but they’re just playing and not doing anything wrong so you can’t be cross with them. We also make a noise when we have BBQs etc. neighbours who live in fairly close proximity needs to be a bit tolerant of each other.

This is the view I take: playing in the garden, or on the street is what I see as their 'reasonable enjoyment' (unless they're taking the p & stopping me from sleeping at night).

Unfortunately the sound causes my kids (and sometimes me) to self-harm, so I do all I can to mitigate it indoors, or leave if we have to. Thankfully the city where we live has lots of parks.
