To report this as benefit fraud

A relative is claiming benefits, can’t work due to health but is one of those who is always complaining about something wrong with her but is always able to do the things she wants to do. Can holiday abroad, always down the gym, etc. When she was working she was always making complaints against employers- one of life’s victims.

She sold a property a couple of years ago and has squirrelled about £40k away through investments. I think has got her mother to do this for her.

I’m so fed up of seeing people like her take the piss. I 100% support a welfare system and it really pisses me off to see it abused like this. And meanwhile we are working our arses off and not able to afford the foreign travel and gym memberships.

I’m so tempted to report her secret savings to DWP.

At the end of the day, as tax payers, this is all our money that is being stolen. It means that there is less in the 'pot' for other things such as the NHS as, as we have to with our personal finances, the Govt have to balance the books. If a relative was regularly dipping into your bank account you'd do something.

Ready to be shot down in flames & accused of being a fascist now. 😩

CBA, really. The fact that she could be on non-means tested benefits and the OP is only angry because she resents somebody else appearing to have a nicer life than hers is escaping some.

Reminds me of my ex practically frothing at the mouth at the idea of my receiving benefits and informing me triumphantly that he'd reported me and would continue to report me until I was arrested because I was 'stealing from the public purse and hardworking taxpayer'. I wasn't even claiming anything, but he was absolutely convinced I had to be.

I do wonder from time to time whether he's still wasting his life reporting me for non-existent fraud.

.

What’s your point here?

You don’t think claimants should be questioned on their eligibility to claim? Or you think reporting is unkind? Or this particular thread has annoyed you?

I understand it but can you prove it? Say for example a grandparent died the mother inherited and says to the daughter I'm investing this money for you for when I'm gone that isn't illegal because the money was never in the daughters name nor was it in the will to go to the daughter so therfore no fraud and unless the mother goes into a home that money will come to.them

No, there would be no fraud there because the claimant was never given the money. Its perfectly lawful to choose not to gift someone part of your own inheritance for whatever reason you choose. In this case, the OPs relative owned £40k as a result of her house sale and has chosen to give it away. Whether it's real, or in name only, whether it was done to retain benefit entitlement or because she simply wanted to gift her mother, she can't dispose of an asset that was hers and would have kept her off benefits and then claim benefits.

So focus there then.

I’m not really bothered if a certain type of person wants to flame me for being unhappy at benefit fraud. It’s themselves who should be ashamed if they support it.

Don’t you think benefit fraud impacts the taxpayer?

No. I think the inefficient taxation of the super rich affects the tax payer far more.

Can’t this thread just be left to die? OP has decided what he/she will do.

Perhaps if you were more financially literate you would see that the real villains are the super rich, not people you happen to be pathetically jealous of.

Not your business. Go and start one.

I 100% support those who claim genuinely. Our welfare system is something to be proud of. If you need it and claim it appropriately then I 100% support it.

Yes it may well sound petty and vindictive. And I’ve not done anything for the reason that that is not my nature.
But i’m angry that someone can have £40k in savings and do nothing, whilst we work full time and have no savings because the cost of living is extortionate. It’s very upsetting actually. And she thinks it’s absolutely fine to do it, to essentially steal from other working people. And lots of people here also seem to think it’s ok, so that’s an interesting reflection of society at present isn’t it.

You’ve motivated me to be honest.

What's in your nature is seemingly a bit flexible.

@ClareClareClareClare but why are you so angry and aggressive in your posts…pull back a bit and people are less likely to flame you.

No, some of the posters here would let them dip in the bank account because it would be vindictive to make trouble for them.

not exactly. Posters are highlighting that not all benefits are means tested and that your relative may not be abusing the system.
for all your info on money hidden away, you don’t appear to know which benefit is being claimed…

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 15/04/2025 17:36

ClareClareClareClare · 15/04/2025 17:34

UC long term. Possibly pip.

Well if PIP no problem as not an Income Based (eg: means tested) benefit. But, as I've said before DWP are scrutinising UC accounts asking for valid ID, bank statements etc etc.

ilovesooty · 15/04/2025 17:34

Well why do you need endorsement from Mumsnet then? Just get on with it. Obviously you've shifted a bit from it's not in my nature 🙄

And how do you know this?

ClareClareClareClare · 15/04/2025 17:35

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 15/04/2025 17:33

Especially now that DWP are asking people for their bank statements, PayPal statements etc & also have the power to check for hidden bank accounts.

Ahhh you’re pro-fraud are you?
