Hi all. AIBU to want / call the police for neighbour blasting music? I could probably tolerate but DD9 is getting very upset.

Yup. The laws say not between 11pm and 7am.

Come back at 11.01 and you might have a point.

Our council investigate noise complaints at any time of day.

No law has been broken here, unless there's something massive you've not told us.

Surely the law of 'good taste' has been broken!

It is law. Anti social behaviour law.

Go and knock and have a chat with them. It’s not unreasonable to ask to turn it down if it’s upsetting your daughter. You say they’re new neighbours - let them know you don’t want to hear it, otherwise you could have a whole summer of annoying music!

My dh works for environmental health and was saying yesterday people have lost the ability to actually talk to each other to try and sort a problem out, rather than go to the council/ police as a first port off call. Why make things complicated!

IntheSpaghetti · 12/04/2025 21:11

MaryBeardsShoes · 12/04/2025 21:04

OH come ON. This is not acceptable!! No one wants to hear your shitty music. Turn it down, stop being an arsehole to all around you. Doesn’t matter what time of day it is, you are being a shit.

Um, I think you need to calm down. I'm not/don't play loud music but I also don't begrudge my neighbours playing their music in their garden occasionally. It's just part of living near other people imo.

I think it's more antisocial to be making vague threats about taking a hammer round to your neighbours house to do god knows what.

Yes. Laws to abide by. So they need to turn it off at 11pm.

You are being way over sensitive and getting worked up over someone having some fun. If your child sees you getting worked up then they will also feel anxious.

Just put some headphones on your child and play some white noise or calming music to block the noise out. It's not the end of the world.

Or just go round and ask nicely for the music to be turned down.

I'd suggest moving somewhere more remote if you're sensitive to noise.

Edited

I strongly disagree as I was told directly by council noise team that any time of day causing a nuisance is valid.

The music stopped about half an hour ago. (Not long after someone shouting "Ya music's sh*te!"😂)

Maybe but it is still ignorant and there are laws to abide by.

I suppose at least the neighbours' dogs couldn't be heard for a while. I'll not get started on them. Don't want anyone thinking I'm a grump!

Wearing eardefenders in your own home is a rediculous suggestion.

If your child has ‘mental health issues’ triggered by loud music then it’s a decent suggestion as you can’t always control what others do. Some would argue posting on mumsnet rather than asking them to turn it down is more ridiculous than head phones or ear defenders.

It's not even 8pm. It sounds like you need the police calling on you 🥴

You won't though, will you, given that you haven't even got the bottle to ask them to turn it down before you're thinking about complaining to the police(!).

It's not late, it's a warm summer's evening and they're having a garden party. The police won't care and your daughter will have to deal with it.

Holidaysun2025 · 12/04/2025 21:00

Yes same here. I don't have party's but my neighbours do. I quite like hearing their music laughter. Their loundness. Happiness. It reminds me of when my parents used to have new years eve party's and mile stone birthdays. I think it makes me reflect on happy times.

Exactly, I was once sat in the garden during a heatwave and one of the neighbours were playing old classics and it just added to my already chilled happy mood tbh

New neighbour and start of warm weather. It will be crime prevention as it may be a crime scene soon.

then you would be arrested for disturbing the peace instead

I never blast music but I am tolerant of it in small doses (especially early evening), just because people are saying they wouldn't call the feds doesn't mean they're pumping dubstep around their street

LillyPJ · 12/04/2025 20:58

I hate noise from neighbours but I think you need to speak to the neighbours first. Be friendly and polite and try to appeal to their better nature - they may well not even realise their noise is bothering anybody. Besides, I doubt if the police will do anything unless it goes on for hours or they've got nothing better to do.

It's really not if normal neighbour noise like music at 7pm causes her a problem.

Growlybear83 · 12/04/2025 20:56

I think you’re being very unreasonable to have been complaining about the noise as early as 8 pm. If it’s still as loud at midnight then I would go round and ask them to turn it down, but it’s out of order to be complaining at this time of night.

Ok smarty pants, if they had just finished a shift and wanted sleep or needed sleep beforehand.

That’s just the tough shit side of shift work.

From someone who has done shift work for 23 years. The world doesn’t stop making noise because you want sleep unfortunately, Nice as that would be.

It's a party it's what people do. Low music at party's doesn't really go. As I said days /weeks of peace. A one of party and its a massive upset. Give and take let them have their party.

Doesn't need to be low, just not wall shaking level and constant thud, thud thud. Gives you a migrane for a long time.

This thread makes it easy to see those who are considerate for their neighbours and those others who are all about "me me me". If only each house had their owner type pasted above the door then the former could avoid the latter and the chavvy types can live together blaring noise out to their hearts content. Then everyone is happy.

Carclubcomplainer · 12/04/2025 20:53

shewasasaint · 12/04/2025 20:45

If OP put a speaker in her garden and played Wagner opera at full volume I suspect the noisy neighbours wouldn't be happy about that.

Why do they get to inflict their music on everyone else? I'm so glad I have only considerate neighbours.

Yup. Or 5 nursery rhymes on loop for hours on end. You can tell the people on this thread who are the scuzzy sorts who think nothing of playing music without headphones on a train etc.

This is just one more example of a thread (PJs in public, thong in public swimming pool) of how little dignity, decency and decorum some people are determined to display.
