Hi all. AIBU to want / call the police for neighbour blasting music? I could probably tolerate but DD9 is getting very upset.

What 21 degrees at 8pm in the evening where you are in the UK?

Was was before that the music started. According to OP it had been going on over an hour at 7.30. I've just got in from work and it's still warm enough to be out in a T-shirt

This thread makes it easy to see those who are considerate for their neighbours and those others who are all about "me me me". If only each house had their owner type pasted above the door then the former could avoid the latter and the chavvy types can live together blaring noise out to their hearts content. Then everyone is happy.

So true

Yes but one offs aren't the issue, speakers in the garden are just massively inconsiderate. I go to quite a few summer parties but not one of my friends or DH's friends have speakers in the garden. Even as a teenager I had a party in my family detached home with quite a bit of distance between us and the neighbours but I didn't have speakers outside as I wasn't hosting a music festival!

💯

It's a party it's what people do. Low music at party's doesn't really go. As I said days /weeks of peace. A one of party and its a massive upset. Give and take let them have their party.

If party it’s manners to let you neighbours know in advance out of courtesy

Its the last forecast properly sunny day for a while. Of course it's OK for people to play some music and enjoy their gardens as long as it's not going on late into the night, into anti social hours.

If OPs daughter has specific sensitivity to noise, she should wear ear defenders, as many children do.

There’s playing music and there’s blasting it so other people cannot enjoy their homes in peace.

JorgyPorgy · 12/04/2025 22:13

Whoarethoseguys · 12/04/2025 20:32

It doesn't make any difference what night it is. People shouldn't have loud banging music in a residential area with other houses nearby.

Absolutely!

qandatime · 12/04/2025 20:04

I’d go and ask and if that doesn’t work then complain.. Think you’ll need to wait until 11. Spring day or not the entire street shouldn’t hear your music, there’s no need for it and makes you abit of an arsehole.

100%

You're an hour too late. Music was awful unless you like chav music?

What the actual fuck is chav music?

JorgyPorgy · 12/04/2025 22:11

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 12/04/2025 20:01

It’s easy for people to say go and ask them to turn it down, but that can be very intimidating, I tried that once and was verbally abused and they also did it more so it’s not always that simple

Exactly

Cosycover · 12/04/2025 22:10

What's chav music?

JorgyPorgy · 12/04/2025 22:09

TalkToTheHand123 · 12/04/2025 19:57

I shouldn't have to. Should be common sense and respect.

Agreed

JorgyPorgy · 12/04/2025 22:09

Ddakji · 12/04/2025 19:54

It’s upsetting when you have no idea if it’ll be switched off in 10 minutes or carry on for another 5 hours. The mental impact of other people’s noise is draining.

Agreed

I agree, this is terrible advice.

Sorry, but it feels like a lot of people are far more violent and antisocial than decades ago and someone already antisocial enough to blast out music to all their neighbours might be just the kind of person to threaten, intimidate and make the behaviour even worse if you go and ask them. Or worse they start harassing you regularly.

If that happens you have much bigger problems so I totally agree with calling the authorities to deal with it. As a student it would be police who turned up to tell you that neighbours had made noise complaints, so I assume you call the police to complain.

So did it finish at 9pm?

Bringbackjaspers · 12/04/2025 22:03

I'd quite happily call myself and most of my family "chav", by MN standards anyway. Not one of us have EVER played loud music, nor any music for that matter, in our gardens. Not once. Why in the world would you think inflicting one's music choices loudly upon the neighbours is a common, and only, working class practice.

Middle-class snobbery much.

I can well believe it to be true. We have a house next to us with zero soundproofing and when there are Airbnbers in we have to just put up with them having the TV or music on full blast and no idea how long for. It’s happened so often as soon as it starts up I can feel my heart start racing.

One pair of twats left the TV on full blast for hours to keep their dog calm while they were out. Another couple left their dog behind two days in the trot with the poor thing barking in such a distressed manner for up to 6 hours. Who the fuck takes their dog to an Airbnb and then just leaves it in a strange environment while they hit the big city??

The guy living there (who isn’t even the owner) has a grand piano in his unsoundproofed living room, that’s fun too…

Report all this. Councils are cracking down on Airbnbs and antisocial behaviour.

It's not the summer, it's the spring and it isn't even "warm", even if all that was true, still no excuse to inflict your music on others in the form of the speakers in the garden.

JBJ · 12/04/2025 21:20

I feel your pain. There’s currently a very loud party going on two doors down, with teenagers spilling onto the street. Not feeling particularly stabby just yet, but hoping they STFU before I want to go to bed!

Abracadabra12345 · 12/04/2025 21:19

Velmy · 12/04/2025 21:04

You won't though, will you, given that you haven't even got the bottle to ask them to turn it down before you're thinking about complaining to the police(!).

It's not late, it's a warm summer's evening and they're having a garden party. The police won't care and your daughter will have to deal with it.

Actually it’s a warm APRIL spring evening. At least the days are still relatively short

Go and knock and have a chat with them. It’s not unreasonable to ask to turn it down if it’s upsetting your daughter. You say they’re new neighbours - let them know you don’t want to hear it, otherwise you could have a whole summer of annoying music!

My dh works for environmental health and was saying yesterday people have lost the ability to actually talk to each other to try and sort a problem out, rather than go to the council/ police as a first port off call. Why make things complicated!

Judging by the type of music and sound of them, they sound quite chavvy and I don't feel comfortable to approach them as people these days can be unpredictable. I may also struggle to keep my cool. As I said, all sorted now. Again my point was more about whether or not it was acceptable or not for other neighbours.

I've often thought the same! If only we could choose to live like this....
