Hi all. AIBU to want / call the police for neighbour blasting music? I could probably tolerate but DD9 is getting very upset.

Where are you where it was 21 at gone 7.30? That's when the OP started the post and people lambasting her as it was "only 8pm", come off it you are in the UK, it is April, I am in one of the warmest part of the country today and it certainly wasn't 21 in the evening! Just because you can wear a t-shirt in 16 degrees, it doesn't mean you have to inflict your musical tastes on people with outdoor speakers. Can't you have the music inside. I personally think some houses are much more suitable for parties than others; all different conditions apply one being are you generally considerate neighbours but others include are your neighbours there, do you have a big enough house to take it inside. Or if you don't, do you care about being squashed into a house so as not inflict your music on others.

I didn't say it was 21 at 7pm. But someone said it wasn't warm yesterday, well it was and even at 16 degrees is a warm evening OP said the music had been going on for an hour at 7.30

Atnd not sure why you are giving me a bloody lecture about playing music. I was at work lol

I actually have no idea what 'chav 'music is? not a genre I am aware of

i would say it relates to volume, although it’s unlikely to include anything classical. Some people seem unable to enjoy what they consider music unless it’s deafening. The idiots blasting it out of their car or as in this case, in their garden, with no thought for anyone else.

I don’t understand why people feel the need to blast their music in built up areas! It drives me mad. So selfish, not everyone wants to listen to it. I wouldn’t call the police though, I’m sure they have more important matters to deal with but I would knock on them and ask them to turn it down.

So what should people do, go through life not saying boo to a goose, letting people take the piss 'just incase' they're rude when spoken to?

Utterly ridiculous way to live your life.

OP said she'd "go round with a hammer" - With that attitude she probably would get some stick and rightly so.

It's not unreasonable to enjoy music in your garden - If OP had knocked the door and politely asked what time they were finishing, she might have got a decent answer. Or she might not, but if you don't ask, you don't get.

It seems she has some preconceived ideas about these people based on their music though, so I expect nothing short of total capitulation on their part would have been good enough.

Of course it’s unreasonable to “enjoy music in your garden” if that means imposing your music on others. Of course, you enjoying your music in your garden only happens because your own neighbours aren’t so inconsiderate as to play their music in their garden and drown out yours.

You're an hour too late. Music was awful unless you like chav music?

Reasonability depends on the volume level. It was ridiculous. You couldn't have a conversation in your own house with all the doors and windows closed. You shouldn't have to go knock and ask. One should always be considerate of one's neighbours.

I don't think I would have got stick going around with a hammer though.

Agreed except I don’t know what you mean about “got stick … hammer “.

people blasting music might not be the reasonable type, what happens if they threaten OP, she shouldn’t have to put herself in potentially dangerous situation, she has a kid to think about to. Some people don’t take kindly being told what to do by their neighbours. Some ppl are nasty & her neighbours sound like utter chavs at best

@OldCottageGreenhouse I don'y hear any hair dryers or washing machines from either neighbour. I'd be fine if I could.

Their teen children often have karaoke sessions which is quite loud and annoying but don't last too long and tolerate this as well as their dogs barking everytime someone goes past their property.

Richiewoo · 12/04/2025 23:24

Don't call the police they don't do asb. Report it to the council.

LittleCharlotte · 12/04/2025 23:15

That's harassment you're getting from your neighbour. She sounds quite unhinged and I'd be reporting her for that.

OldCottageGreenhouse · 12/04/2025 23:12

I lived in a mews house once (instead of two semi detached houses, there’s 4 small one bedroom homes) and omg the woman next door seemed to think that any sounds from neighbours = noise nuisance. At any time of day! Put a pile of plates in kitchen cupboard at 11am on a Thursday - she banged on wall/text me & came storming round. Put washing machine on spin cycle at 1pm on a Saturday - same again. She once came running into my house and up my stairs at 6:30 on a Saturday night once because I had my hairdryer on in my bedroom and she’d heard it from her own bedroom. Scared the ever loving shite out of me.
It did start off with her just politely complaining whenever she heard ANYTHING (first time it happened, I explained the difference between evidence of your neighbours’ existence vs noise nuisance but she didn’t take it in). Then it escalated.

She ended up calling Environmental Health and tried to ‘force them’ to “order (me) to only use hairdryers/washing machines & tv before 8pm!” Confused Please don’t turn into one of these neighbours OP!

Goldenbear · 12/04/2025 23:04

I actually think it's ashame that Covid killed off clubbing as it is far more fitting and considerate to have excessive noise at a club level with sound proofing. I used to go to all sorts of Drum and Bass nights when I was in my early twenties, I can't imagine it being as much fun in a house, just not the same atmosphere. It just seems more civilised to have people in a venue who want the same thing and leave everyone else in peace so that there is more of a democratic experience of a nice Spring evening!

OldCottageGreenhouse · 12/04/2025 23:02

@TalkToTheHand123 I think you need to understand the difference between acceptable neighbour noise with occasional louder annoyances that goes with living in close proximity and ACTUAL noise nuisance.

If it goes on until after 11pm then by all means call 101. But before, they won’t even let you finish your sentence before telling you it’s not a police matter.

Gogogo12345 · 12/04/2025 22:22

Was was before that the music started. According to OP it had been going on over an hour at 7.30. I've just got in from work and it's still warm enough to be out in a T-shirt

To be fair they did come out to a previous neighbour a few years ago when called.

Agree it’s becoming more of a problem, we need to be more Respectful of others like the Japanese . Old day UK was much more respectful

I’m not going to pretend that the past was some splendid halcyon world, but amplified music wasn’t anywhere so much of an issue. Only a tiny number of people had an amp that could be loud enough to really disturb others and, as I said, no portable speakers.

Sugarfish · 12/04/2025 22:35

From bitter experience of living next door to arseholes who’d often play loud music at 2 in the morning. The police will not care. The only time they ever come out was when one of their gatherings spilled out onto the street. Apparently you can’t do anything about people making noise in their own homes at unsocial times.

JorgyPorgy · 12/04/2025 22:33

Ddakji · 12/04/2025 22:32

I genuinely think those little portable speakers are one of the worst inventions in a society that has ceased to know how to behave in public as we have in the UK. If this was Japan it wouldn’t be an issue because it’s so frowned upon to impose your noise on others. Here any old selfish twat can limit their phone to a speaker anywhere and disturb others.

I'd quite happily call myself and most of my family "chav", by MN standards anyway. Not one of us have EVER played loud music, nor any music for that matter, in our gardens. Not once. Why in the world would you think inflicting one's music choices loudly upon the neighbours is a common, and only, working class practice.

Middle-class snobbery much.

Chav is a behaviour, not a class

JorgyPorgy · 12/04/2025 22:30

availablecupcake · 12/04/2025 22:07

I agree, this is terrible advice.

Sorry, but it feels like a lot of people are far more violent and antisocial than decades ago and someone already antisocial enough to blast out music to all their neighbours might be just the kind of person to threaten, intimidate and make the behaviour even worse if you go and ask them. Or worse they start harassing you regularly.

If that happens you have much bigger problems so I totally agree with calling the authorities to deal with it. As a student it would be police who turned up to tell you that neighbours had made noise complaints, so I assume you call the police to complain.

Exactly

JorgyPorgy · 12/04/2025 22:27

Velmy · 12/04/2025 21:04

You won't though, will you, given that you haven't even got the bottle to ask them to turn it down before you're thinking about complaining to the police(!).

It's not late, it's a warm summer's evening and they're having a garden party. The police won't care and your daughter will have to deal with it.

MaryBeardsShoes · 12/04/2025 21:04

OH come ON. This is not acceptable!! No one wants to hear your shitty music. Turn it down, stop being an arsehole to all around you. Doesn’t matter what time of day it is, you are being a shit.

Spot on

JorgyPorgy · 12/04/2025 22:23

kitchenplans · 12/04/2025 20:57

It's really not if normal neighbour noise like music at 7pm causes her a problem.

Blasting music & speakers in garden isn’t normal neighbour noise, it’s an effing nuisance any day / time of day
