FIL showing himself up - saddened by DH’s reaction

SunnierDays21 · 12/04/2025 18:22

We are away with the family currently, DH’s parents have joined us (staying separately on the same site).

We’ve spent much of the afternoon in the on-site bar and DH and FIL were engrossed in the football results which were on the screen.

An advertisement came up for a women’s match tomorrow and DH asked FIL if he’d want to watch it. The conversation went something like this:

DH - fancy it tomorrow, Dad?
FIL - hahaha
DH - seriously
FIL - why would I spend my Sunday afternoon watching a bunch of fat lezza’s pretend to know how to play football?
DH - it’s come on quite a bit
FIL - do me a favour, I’ve seen women’s footballers and I’d not touch them with a barge pole
DH - alright, you have a point

Our daughter has been getting into football over the past few months and this was really disheartening to listen to. I have brought it up with DH and he says he agrees it was inappropriate but his Dad is of a different era and anything he’d tell him would fall on deaf ears.

AIBU to have expected DH to have said something in the moment?

Womens football is dire!
A lot of them are quite chunky, they aren't fit ( athletically ) as the man, they cannot kick and the game is just boring.
It never will be as mainstream as the mens.
No wonder your FIL doesn't want to watch it, I don't know any man who will watch it voluntarily

I'm sure you'd run rings around the lionesses on the pitch. If only there was sufficient haulage equipment to prise ginormous you out from under that bridge....

I would personally do anything to dissuade my daughter, were she to express an interest in football. But this is just my opinion.

Oh. Why?

SomethingFun · 13/04/2025 09:15

Don’t need men to slag women when we’re happy to give them a kicking ourselves. I wonder how good the women would be if they were also being paid millions a year? Women’s football was more popular back in the day so the FA banned it. Fil sounds awful and ignorant dull people like this won’t be told.

Mid/late 60’s

Wtf?! So just a few years older than my DH who’s spent years watching his own DD play football. He would never in a million years have had an attitude like that.

Your FIL is a misogynistic dinosaur. And your DH is a total drip. To say he’d got a point is pathetic and awful. He totally let your DD down. My vagina would’ve snapped shut and never reopened.

Hwi · 12/04/2025 23:48

Nanny0gg · 12/04/2025 21:29

He didn't have to be quite so offensive with his 'opinion' though did he?

Yes, I agree. What can I say? I agree.

Hwi · 12/04/2025 23:47

Lorlorlorikeet · 12/04/2025 20:35

You have come across so, so poorly on this thread. 😬

I shall try to improve in my own time and do my best to come back to the thread, if still available, and to conform to the uniform idiocy!

Hwi · 12/04/2025 23:46

BanditoShipman · 12/04/2025 20:18

You don’t watch anything unless you find the people in it attractive?

Any meaningless activity (sport, ballet) are mostly watched for the visual pleasure, not intellectual stimulation, so I only watch those sports which I find pleasing - i.e. I find the participants attractive. Not so with intellectual offerings - opera, plays, films - I am not for obvious reasons concerned with the appearance, only the substance.

Hwi · 12/04/2025 23:43

Clafoutie · 12/04/2025 20:11

Having an opinion is all well and good but, in the OP’s case, the expressed opinion of the FIL ( and, worse, the agreement of the DH) has the potential to directly affect their DD who is interested in playing football. Doesn’t that matter?

I would personally do anything to dissuade my daughter, were she to express an interest in football. But this is just my opinion.

Hoppinggreen · 12/04/2025 20:08

Lucky
Either way, it doesn't reflect well just like your other posts

Horrified my posts do not conform to common idiocy and do not reflect the madness of the world. Not.

Notsosure1 · 12/04/2025 22:59

He wouldn’t watch female football bc he wouldn’t ‘touch them with a barge pole’ - but he WILL watch male only matches bc he would shag them touch them with a barge pole?

This is his argument - point it out next time, OP.

privatenonamegiven · 12/04/2025 22:30

I appreciate that it’s difficult to challenge op but saying he needs to hear from another male is a cop out. This kind of behaviour needs challenging by all and if your daughter was present wouldn’t you want her to see you standing up for what’s right.

Livelovebehappy · 12/04/2025 21:38

But there’s a pretty big difference between the best mens teams and the best womens teams. As said, it’s just my opinion. I’ve tried watching womens matches, but it just seems so clumsy and boring. Obviously others might disagree and love it.

and if the FiL shares your opinion, why couldn't he say "Not for me thanks, I'm not interested" ?

JHound · 12/04/2025 22:01

But the women are playing the women.

So to say the women have won more because the women’s teams are “rubbish” compared to the men makes no sense. They are still playing among the elite in their category same as the men do.

The women are just immensely more successful. The men have been catching up though.

Maitri108 · 12/04/2025 21:56

Surely your husband knew what his dad's views were on women's sports before mentioning it.

CarpetKnees · 12/04/2025 21:42

There's a time to have a feminist view and on holiday where the drinks are flowing is not the right time IMO. Will only lead to a difficult atmosphere. Neither of them were personally insulting to you or your footballing daughter.

The time to challenge misogynistic views and homophobia is whenever you hear it. If that happens to be on holiday, then that is the time.
What message does it send just sitting there and accepting it ?
Even worse, what message does it send that the OP's dh agreed with it ? Hmm

All the (hardly ancient) FiL had to say is "not for me, I'm not interested".

Not sure how your dh is excusing him because "he is from a different generation". I'm in my 60s and would challenge that all day long - as would my dh, and as would my parents have done (would be in their mid 90s if they were still alive). "Another generation" isn't the issue - him being a rude, ignorant homophobe and misogynist is the issue here.

If him being called out on that meant I ended up seeing him less, then that would not be a bad thing.
I would also hope to set an example to my dc that any discriminatory language should be challenged. Always. Anywhere.

RedHelenB · 12/04/2025 21:41

He did challenge it by saying women's football had come on recently. Doesn't sound like his dad is going to listen to him on the subject though

MrsKeats · 12/04/2025 21:41

PishPish · 12/04/2025 19:29

Many of the responses on this thread are considerably more alarming than the FIL’s original comment. Still, I suppose the extent of the internalised misogyny explains in part why the bar for male behaviour is often so low on here.

Agreed. Depressing reading. Me and dh are 60 and if we spoke/thought like that we would be out of a job.
Disgusting misogyny. Your poor daughter.

Livelovebehappy · 12/04/2025 21:38

JHound · 12/04/2025 21:13

This makes no sense. They play against the best women’s teams just as how the men play against the best men.

But there’s a pretty big difference between the best mens teams and the best womens teams. As said, it’s just my opinion. I’ve tried watching womens matches, but it just seems so clumsy and boring. Obviously others might disagree and love it.

SunnierDays21 · 12/04/2025 21:36

To those asking why I didn’t challenge him. A few reasons, but mainly because he needs to hear it from a male. He has made minor sexist remarks in the past, and is used to his wife picking up all cooking, cleaning etc (DH doesn’t approve of this, and luckily this attitude hasn’t transferred to him and he more than pulls his weight).

OP posts:
autisticbookworm · 12/04/2025 21:33

My dads 78 and will watch women’s football there’s no excuse for that type of misogyny and men who collude in it are no better

Nanny0gg · 12/04/2025 21:29

Hwi · 12/04/2025 19:24

Your FIL is entitled to his opinion. Some sports are not for women, some sports are not for men. Surely those who have eyes, will see it. I was in a local branch of NatWest the other day and they ran adverts of an obese Olympic female athlete weightlifting, GB team. As a woman, I wanted to hug that poor lady and cry and tell her - think of uterine prolapse and hernias!
Equally, I was horrified when I saw male rhythmic gymnastics competitions - they looked as if they were taking the piss of this beautiful discipline.
Horses for courses, as the saying goes.

He didn't have to be quite so offensive with his 'opinion' though did he?

anyolddinosaur · 12/04/2025 21:28

IF this actually happened (someone in his 60s grew up at a time when this was not acceptable behaviour) then your DH was a dick for agreeing with him.

Judgejudysno1fan · 12/04/2025 21:24

So you can only watch womens football if they're not lesbians or fat and they must be sexy and slutty that he can touch with or without a barge pole. Yeah sounds awesome.

Nanny0gg · 12/04/2025 21:23

Sidebeforeself · 12/04/2025 18:32

I think theres a time and a place to challenge this thinking and on holiday, after a couple of drinks, isn’t it.

He didn't to say that his dad had a point

He could have just left it
