To take recreational drugs in your 50s

Isthisokdoyouthink · 11/04/2025 19:34

Just that really. Bunch of married fathers going out and taking recreational drugs (concealed up one of them’s rectum) - one hid it from his wife, one has a wife that does it too, the other I don’t know.

What do you think?

AIBU to feel a bit eurgh about it and a bit like they never grew up?

YABU - it’s fine. Each to their own

YANBU - it is a bit yuk.

It’s not for me and I’ve never done it. I’d assume someone in their 50s would have too much to lose to be shoving it up their arse. I’m in my 40s. DH and his mates love it. I do think it’s a bit childish but generally don’t let it affect me as long as the situation is appropriate. If my own DH put it up his bum I’d be fuming and create an endless supply of sexual up the bum jokes. Would I leave? Probably not but it’d be added to the “is it time” list which is an accrual of times our values didn’t align.

to sum up - it is a bit yuk but each to their own.

Just own it then rather than trying to justify the fact kids are stabbed, deliberately disembowelled or killed because elsewhere there are child slaves making chocolate

Local children too, every day there are drug wars going on, teenagers trafficking other teens for county lines.

I am not ignorant to the ethical issues with drugs, but honestly unless everyone on this thread doesn’t eat chocolate, use an iPhone, shop on ASOS, etc etc etc… no judgement to any of it but my point is there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and we all make decisions where we turn a blind eye to the reality.

You can't compare taking illegal drugs to buying a dress on ASOS!

I am a very uncool person. Life seems quite challenging enough without messing up your body. Especially these days. At any age.

Life seems quite challenging enough without messing up your body.

Same - that’s also been my approach. Happy if that makes me uncool.

I read a teen fiction book called Junk when I was in high school about drugs and it was very impactful - that one book helped put me off massively because I seen how people can go from recreational to addict. So kudos to that author.

Always thought it was best to steer clear of them altogeher and generally don’t have/want drug users in my social circle. I can just about tolerate weed/cannabis (not sure of the difference or the correct term) users but even then I don’t want it smoked around me. The smell is rank and as someone who doesn’t even drink I don’t want to get high.

Dated one guy in my 20s who was on coke and he and all his coke head friends were awful. They were just terrible people but I feel the coke made it worse.

Anyway all of this is to say- I am well aware of the ethical issues with taking drugs, and I take them anyway fully aware of those. Life is full of making decisions that aren’t entirely ethical, people do it every day. That was my only point.

Just own it then rather than trying to justify the fact kids are stabbed, deliberately disembowelled or killed because elsewhere there are child slaves making chocolate. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am owning it? I’ve clearly said I take drugs knowing full well the ethical implications.

I am just also pointing out that other things are unethical too.

It’s not their health I am thinking about to be honest. That’s their business. I just find it a bit immature. And hypocritical.

I wouldn't do it now at my age although I did when younger. But is it any different to people getting pissed? Or people reaching for a bottle of wine as soon as they get home from work/ get to an airport/ go out for food. Never mind all inclusive holidays where people just sit round drinking all day. Personally I find alcohol just as sad - the fact that it's so normalised and acceptable to drink all the time. But I know that's my issue and as long as it's not harming anyone else eg no kids being neglected then I'm not bothered about it. Each to their own..

I havent been drunk in around 20 years.

Nor have I 😊

You can do mushroom retreats in Wales and Suffolk - google for details. Absolutely life changing 🙂

That sounds legendary. I would love to try it.

It’s interesting the judgement of drugs on here: “sad, irresponsible, yuck, scary”.

Yet how many get plastered when they go out with their group of mums or partners?

Alcohol, the socially acceptable drug…

MDMA, LSD and mushrooms all in clinical trials for refractive depression at the moment here and in the States.

If people feel the need to take them, perhaps it’s holding back depression or some other mental health issue. Not always of course.

Id be interested in mushrooms at a clinic in Holland in a managed setting (which exists by the way). I’m sure it would give me some thing useful for living a life well lived. Far more so than alcohol. Alcohol is a depressive drug. Fact.

I think they're beyond stupid. At their time of life they need to take a great deal of care of their aging bodies. They don't call the 50s snipers alley for nothing.

I don't drink, plenty of people don't.

The point is that alcohol is positively encouraged in our culture.

People are alienated for not drinking! It doesn't really make sense.

kingcobra · 11/04/2025 20:41

I dont think its great at any age but in your early 20s and experimenting with life its more understandable - your brain hasnt fully developed and impulse control and peer pressure tends to be more influential. Plus, you dont have the life experience yet to consider the consequences.

In your 50's I think it just comes across as entirely pathetic - by that age, most people have family responsibilities/long term job and there is something deeply sad to me about a 50 year old shoving powder up their nose or whatever it is. It's not a good look. Oh, and I WOULD include alcohol in this too- 50 year olds getting smashed every weekend is just as pathetic.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/04/2025 20:41

Funny how people claim to only use ethical recreational drugs, a load of tosh, drugs are supplying by dealers, dealers are ruthless.

I have heard people justify cocaine claiming it is top rock, unmixed, its impossible to produce cocaine without mixing it with all types of crap.

Gordon Ramsey was in a show where they mixed the paste, vile.

The illegal part is moot in my mind. I would consume drugs ethically if they were legalised. Because they are not, the supply chains are unethical.

Again, I am not saying they are the same, just that they are both unethical. Chocolate isn’t illegal but huge percentages of the chocolate everyone consumes every day is made using child labour- is that ethical simply because the end product is legal? I’m not so sure. https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/dec/02/brands-to-avoid-mars-cadbury-chocolate-firms-criticised-ethics-report

Anyway all of this is to say- I am well aware of the ethical issues with taking drugs, and I take them anyway fully aware of those. Life is full of making decisions that are selfish or that aren’t entirely ethical, people do it every day. That was my only point.

Edited

This lot would insist on Fairtrade chocolate.

I did loads of recreational drugs in my 20s and had lots of fun.

But now? Absolutely not. I have a family to think of if I took something dodgy, and a career to think of if I got caught. It’s just not worth any of the risks.

I guess I generally don’t think too much about what others choose to do. However, I would be upset with DH if he did this for the same reasons mentioned above.

Yes, Actually, there is also the risk of a criminal record, impact on income and children. Another reason to be a bit ‘hmmm’ about it.

OP posts:
Wishyouwerehere50 · 11/04/2025 20:39

I want to understand the impact on people exploited and that is where I could shift viewpoint. ( Not cocaine which I see as pretty horrible in every respect).

It being illegal? Well, that does not influence me morally at all. In terms of consequences, yes of course.

This is why I thought Professor Nutt was pretty inspiring. He was the Government drugs tsar/advisor many years back. He was very much championing legalisation of certain drugs including ecstacy. He was vocal about all the lives destroyed by alcohol. Never mind observing the behaviour of people who drink. Horrible. He got sacked in the end for those views.

The more I think on it, the more I think what a cracking time those blokes will have. ( No pun intended). 🤣

People die in factories making fast fashion. The unworn clothes from ASOS and boohoo and shein etc end up in landfill, which is killing the planet.

I’m not saying it’s the same but yeah it’s still as unethical.

But you did made the comparison. You are correct that capitalism involves the exploitation of others but that isn't the same as using an illegal product directly linked to crime....
