To take recreational drugs in your 50s

Just that really. Bunch of married fathers going out and taking recreational drugs (concealed up one of them’s rectum) - one hid it from his wife, one has a wife that does it too, the other I don’t know.

What do you think?

AIBU to feel a bit eurgh about it and a bit like they never grew up?

YABU - it’s fine. Each to their own

YANBU - it is a bit yuk.

But why is taking mdma worse than going binge drinking.

Good point.

Are you sure they weren't winding you up? There is no club or venue I've ever been to in the UK where you'd have to smuggle drugs in up your bum. They'd have gone to the loo in order to be discreet about getting them out of whatever container/pocket/sock they were in (and to be discreet about doing them).

The few times I've been to a club in the last ten years (London techno), I've been thoroughly searched. Pockets emptied, wallets emptied, patted down pretty comprehensively, checks for metal. Probably not arse stashing territory, but not just a token gesture.

One of the none drug taking people there said ‘oh, bill, Toby and Ken have just nipped to the loo, Ken’s got the drugs in up his bum so…’

I should have asked more. But I was just thinking ‘ew’ and carried on.

Extremely pathetic of them. I could forgive a youngster but a grown adult? What a bore.

It might not be worse for health and being a dick than drinking, as many have said. But it is illegal despite what many say about it being normalised. So there are consequences if caught for professional 50 something people that there aren't if they are pissed.

Or they'll have a heart attack. It happens, people think they can take this stuff when they're young and they don't have to work at youth, but advancing years are a pure gamble.

I've seen it happen. They think they're invincible and then they die after a couple of lines.

my husband is late 50s and occasionally does/did coke on a night out (usually lies about it). If he goes out he’ll stay at a mates and come home when he’s feeling better. I think he’d been doing it this way maybe 4-5 times a year for a couple of years before I found out. It made sense as a few times he had called me while on a night out an had seemed so different the way he was talking, the penny eventually dropped that he’d been a coked up twat each time. I just keep reminding him how pathetic it is and that I’m embarrassed for him and won’t take care of him if he survives a massive heart attack, it does seem like he’s stopped. We’ve been together 25 years I’m 13 years younger, we used to have a good time going out drinking when we were younger and he was always a bit wild, I like trail running nowadays though, haven’t been out drinking in about 18 years but he mostly stayed the same I guess.

Kreisler · 12/04/2025 15:57

It's not the belly that's the problem here though.

It's Ken's illegal bumhole.

Ken's Illegal Bumhole is my favourite band

Browharhar · 02/03/2026 00:20

Bloody hell. Maybe in your twenties when you have joy to spare, but I can't imagine risking any of my precious serotonin at this age. And the comedown must be horrendous! In your twenties you could go to work on no sleep and still meet mates for a drink after. At this age, I imagine it would be a full week of feeling like death warmed up, and childcare and responsibilities on top? No thank you! 🙃

Barmy.

My first thought as well. Any fat, unhealthy 50-something who takes cocaine is dicing with death.

That said, most 50-somethings already use a very dangerous and addictive drug. It’s called alcohol. I’d rather live in a country where alcohol was illegal but MDMA and ecstasy were legal. At least they make you happy. Alcohol is a disgusting drug that makes people violent, abusive and depressed. For my money, it’s the single most overrated thing in the world.

Oh yes I agree. It’s ruined my fils health. Started with cancer in his 50s, now with a stroke and t2 diabetes in his 60s.

yanbu. It’s a heart attack waiting to happen.

This is up there with a man in his 40’s that I know of so desperate for cannabis that he smoked bath room mold at his parents house!

I thoroughly enjoy listening to Professor Nutt.

Who might speak more sense here? This guy, or the pinheads in Government making policy who sacked him.

What about the other harms to a person outside of death/accidents though. There is a known link with mental health issues and very clearly drugs like mdma do affect the central nervous system, especially if used repeatedly. Whereas in contrast skiing/horse-riding etc I would assume have many physical and mental health benefits.

Not said with judgement, I took class a’s regularly in teens (90s raves) and again in 30s (festivals). Friend’s mum used to give us amphetamines, age no more than 16. Only recently have I reflected how messed up that was. Personally I haven’t touched any since having children, but I don’t think I’d be wildly judgemental about it in others if the kids were not around.

I also agree re booze being no better. Again, said without judgement of individuals, I drank heavily in a middle class mum wine at home way 🙄, for many years. It is presented to us as acceptable but it’s really no better. Literal poison to our bodies, and dangerous for the vulnerable.

I think it is a societal problem but I think op is perhaps a bit unreasonable to judge the individuals so harshly.

Kitkatcatflap · 13/04/2025 11:50

Recreational drug taking in your 50's (over 40s) is embarrassing. Everyone knows you switch to prescription.

And 'concealed up his bum' for safety, as if. He did that for extra kicks. Pockets wallets, back of the phone case would have been safe ...... I bet he is on many a A&E rectal x-ray top 10.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/04/2025 11:42

I know that some drugs eg cocaine can cause strokes in people of that age.

Wishyouwerehere50 · 13/04/2025 11:34

I didn't see anyone say drugs are harmless.

They certainly are not. I'd never call any drug harmless even if perfectly composed because you cannot predict the effect on each individual and we don't fully appreciate exactly how that drug was processed and what happened along the way.

Pigling · 12/04/2025 23:23

I'm OK with drugs, if you really must, but drugs that have been up my mate's bumhole???? Eurhghh, no thanks

Fhhl · 12/04/2025 23:21

To me though. I have family members who have died due to alcoholism. I also have extended family who are unwell due to bad lifestyle issues. I'd seriously look negatively on class A drug users

Sounds like the "hidden in his bum" was a group of people pretending and boasting that they are "out there on the edge" and wanting to look big for doing something illegal, rather than hiding them out of necessity. I go to loads of gigs in all sorts of venues. The searches, if there are any, are cursory rather than thorough and seem aimed more at finding alcohol so you don't dodge the high prices charged at the bar of most gigs. There would be no difficulty at all putting a small amount of drugs in a wallet, a pocket or even a box of cigarettes. I carry a couple of tablets of an emergency medication in my purse which has never been opened and inspected.

To those on here arguing that drugs like MDMA are "harmless", I'd ask harmless to who? Like heroin and cocaine it is also distributed by violent drug gangs, and young people are still sucked into distributing it on the street.

I think there are those that say that if it was all legal then it wouldn't be fueling gangs.

Please will you all stop making jokes about rectums, otherwise we'll never get to the bottom of this.

Sounds like a shit idea.

A bit up his own arse really....

It reminds me of the Inbetweeners movie when the ' bad guy' snorts a line with Jay's shit covered £20 note. 🤮
