The poshest county in the UK?

Which one county would you say is the outright poshest in the UK? Let’s not use Greater London here, and I know there will be social diversity in all, but which would you say is the poshest overall?
I’m going with Berkshire, darling.😂

Throwing in a suggestion from a northerner: Cheshire

KimberleyClark · 11/04/2025 00:14

Cheshire.

NPET · 11/04/2025 00:13

Berkshire because it's a "Royal County".

Scotland doesn’t have counties so count us out of your baiting discussion.

Triggered much?

why baiting?

Alderley edge, Cheshire

The OP was asking about the poshest county. That is just one place in Cheshire. I live in Cheshire. Macclesfield. Nice enough place but not "posh"

Actually I think there are probably much posher places in Cheshire than Alderley Edge.

I assume that’s a joke 😂

Must be

AbsolutelyZero · 10/04/2025 23:42

It’s full of money but I’d hardly describe it as posh.

Old Alderley certainly is.

Slough isn't in Berkshire, it's in Bucks.

Really? When did it move?!

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/04/2025 00:03

Define "posh" though.

Were I am we are surrounded by loads of titles and "country piles" but they are not at all rich.

Somewhere like the Cotswolds, loads of money but completely nouveau.

So actual posh, like connected to Royalty, etc or rich snobs who think they are something special because they can afford a cottage in a postcard location?

NotEntirelySerious · 11/04/2025 00:03

Armagh is super posh. All the locals speak just like the King.

GeorgianaM · 11/04/2025 00:03

Tresco Island.

memoriesofamiga · 10/04/2025 23:01

Oxfordshire in my experience.

A lot of the monied residents certainly seem to believe that it is!

ItsUpToYou · 10/04/2025 23:59

Surrey.

I don't think it's that simple to do it on a whole county basis, though.

You say Berkshire, OP - home of Bray, Maidenhead and... Slough.

How about North Yorkshire - where you'll find Harrogate, Ripon and... Middlesbrough.

Suffolk has Aldeburgh, Lavenham and... Lowestoft.

Most counties are like it, surely. Maybe Rutland would scrape the win - purely because it has two smart towns and no extra room for anywhere less desirable to even fit in!

Slough isn't in Berkshire, it's in Bucks.

123ZYX · 10/04/2025 23:57

Cumbria? Maybe not historically, but I suspect it’s got a high proportion of second home owners now

Trumpsgoneloco · 10/04/2025 23:54

Surrey is quite nouveau

Trumpsgoneloco · 10/04/2025 23:54

Hampshire?

Treeleaf11 · 10/04/2025 23:51

Not sure about Berkshire-its got Reading

Eyes98 · 10/04/2025 23:50

Chungai · 10/04/2025 23:46

West Sussex.

Followed by Bucks or Hants I think.

Wiltshire is rather posh too in parts - but has Swindon in the middle.

But West Sussex contains Worthing😂😂

Oh what about Herefordshire? Not super swanky but also not rough.

Moopsie · 10/04/2025 23:45

Berkshire or Buckinghamshire would be my guess, but don’t sleep on Pembrokeshire. Plenty of very wealthy people there (if you disregard Pembroke Dock area) and it’s gorgeous.

Eyes98 · 10/04/2025 23:45

SpanThatWorld · 10/04/2025 23:42

Naice but not posh

Contains Peterborough

Excluding Peterborough what would you say then?

OP posts:
PyrannosaurusRex · 10/04/2025 23:45

Posh isn’t necessarily about house prices. I’d go for the stealth posh rural counties like Northumberland, Berwickshire, areas with big estates and huge houses that you don’t even know about because they’re surrounded by thousands of acres of deer- infested parkland.
