One day old baby in pub

So family member gave birth to first baby yesterday afternoon, she's a very young mum only 17 , normal delivery but episiotomy, baby good weight healthy. Was discharged home today and a couple of hours later was at the local pub not drinking alcohol just showing baby off and eating a meal , but am I right in thinking a day old baby baby is really too young to be in a pub or anywhere really , also worried she should be resting as obviously will be sore. Other family members have said I'm being old fashioned am I.

Good for her. I think it's great she's enjoying showing off her newborn.

I did a big IKEA shop and had lunch there on day 3 of DDs life. 22 month old DS was also there.

It was my 30th birthday and I needed meatballs and lingonberry sauce. Worth the 3 hour round trip.

It’s fine as long as she feels up to it
i was at the local park 13 hours after I had DS3 It was a boiling hot August so I took DS1 and DS2 pushing my new pram

We called into Tesco on the way home.. DD2 was 6 hours old.
I was a bit tired though... Popped DD2 in her car seat in the trolley, Dh went off round the shop with our other two (aged just 2 and just 1!) in another trolley.
I wandered off from the nappy section, forgetting my trolley and baby!!! Dh caught up with me and asked where she was...waddled back to the nappies where she was surrounded by Tesco employees . They were very understanding😆

She may have some sort of adrenaline rush going on, I would check up on her in a week or so for baby blues just in case.

doreeen · 10/04/2025 00:05

we stopped for food at a busy service station on the way home from hospital with DS age 2 days. was starving and wanted a McDonald’s.

DC2 I was doing school runs etc in the first weeks. I know people with even more children especially don’t get to just shut away from the world for a few weeks.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 10/04/2025 00:05

Newborn babies are ok in pubs but I wish they would ban children between 6 months and 18 years old, like a childfree wedding everyone else on mumsnet complains about. They ruin the fucking atmosphere for everyone else.

Frenchie01 · 10/04/2025 00:04

Well it's official I'm a wimp lol , had allmy babies a long time ago and couldn't go anywhere for a few days , I'm 42 now and glad I'm not having any more cos I don't think k I would make it out of the house for a year now lol 😂

Sounds fine to me. If she wasn't feeling up to it, I'm sure she wouldn't be there. No issue with the baby out either.

LoserWinner · 09/04/2025 23:59

I taught a ballet lesson the day after my first was born…

RedToothBrush · 09/04/2025 23:57

DS was two days old. I'd had a CS. We stopped off on the way home (,it was a 45 min drive home) to go to Tescos Extra. You know one of those ridiculously big ones. We wander around for ages working out what we needed to buy. I also went out for the day at a local event when DS was 4 days old. DH had DS. I got asked when the baby was due. That caused a certain amount of embarrassment when I said "oh no he was born a couple of days ago, he's over there somewhere".

Is it just places where alcohol is served that gets the judge my treatment.

89redballoons · 09/04/2025 23:56

If she's feeling up to it then I think it's fine. It's normally day 3 after having a baby that's the worst in my experience, so at this point she might still be feeling quite chipper.

I took baby DS1 to a pub on new year's eve in the afternoon, and even had a glass of wine while he slept in his pram. He would have been 3 weeks old.

Frenchie01 · 09/04/2025 23:50

Just to clarify I wasn't judging her , I was only 16 when I had first baby many years ago . She will be a brilliant mum I'm sure i was just concerned she might be overdoing it and wondered if others thought I was being old fashioned that's all , clearly I am . I just remember feeling too shit to go anywhere all 3 times but like i said we're all different

She was probably motivated by the prospect of a large delicious meal cooked for her by someone else with no clearing up involved! I distinctly recall making it to my local's curry night with DS1 when he was 3 days old for similar reasons.

Incidentally, I wonder if teenage new mums get even hungrier than most?

GreenLeaf25 · 09/04/2025 23:42

So judgy. I was a young mum and once I gave birth I was out and about. It just didn’t affect me the way my second did 10 years later. With regard to the baby, completely fine for it to be out for a short while!

I think that this young mother doesn’t have any support.

Curious how you got from her nipping down the pub for lunch, to not having any support?

Frenchie01 · 09/04/2025 23:40

Yeh I was only 16 when I had my first and I was sat at home feeling terrible for first few days but we're all different I suppose.

LadyTable · 09/04/2025 23:39

Oh yeah, I forgot about the school run.

I did that (15 min walk) the day after my 3rd DC was born.

2nd DC was born on a Friday.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 09/04/2025 23:38

I think of she was washing the meal down with a few snake bites or long island iced teas I'd be a bit "wow" but she probably wants a bit of normality before her new life starts I guess.
I lived in PJ's soaked in breast milk for a few days after giving birth and I was 20!

Frenchie01 · 09/04/2025 23:37

19 since the last one , I can't remember them giving a time limit or anything but I think k I was always at home the first couple of days, but maybe I'm just soft lol .

I genuinely thought (until I had my own baby) that they weren’t allowed out until they’d had their shots. Like puppies…

Brilliant!!🤣

Teenagerantruns · 09/04/2025 23:36

I think it's fine, everyone wants to see a new baby what's the diffence if they meet in a pub or at home? My DD went to shops as a one day old as it easier to do the shopping before we picked up DS.
I can't really remember when we took DS out, but l know we were in the pub garden when he was less than week old..

RedFatball · 09/04/2025 23:36

I did the school run 18 hours after my youngest was born. I didn't have to, my husband was happy to do it but I fancied a walk and it was only 200 yards. DD2 slept in a sling through it but it was nice to show people the top of her head...

LadyTable · 09/04/2025 23:35

but it's been years since I had a baby maybe advice has changed .

How many years?

My eldest is 33 and I was told I could take him out as soon as I felt able.

LadyTable · 09/04/2025 23:34

If she was that sore I'm sure she would've rested up?

As for baby, the midwives told me with my 3 that they could go out as soon as I was well enough to take them.

Nowt wrong with a nice pub lunch when you're happy and celebrating the safe arrival of your newborn.
