One day old baby in pub

So family member gave birth to first baby yesterday afternoon, she's a very young mum only 17 , normal delivery but episiotomy, baby good weight healthy. Was discharged home today and a couple of hours later was at the local pub not drinking alcohol just showing baby off and eating a meal , but am I right in thinking a day old baby baby is really too young to be in a pub or anywhere really , also worried she should be resting as obviously will be sore. Other family members have said I'm being old fashioned am I.

My NCT group met up in a pub to meet the first baby born the day after. The mum was very smug keen to tell us about her birth experience. Mum crashed a few days later when the adrenaline wore off.

I don't understand the issue with the location though. Surely hospitals have more germs than pubs? It's not like it's a midnight lock in?

I'm not quite sure some of the posters have been to a pub in 20 years..I think they imagine every pub is still sticky carpets and random darts flying around?

Why the hell would anyone take a baby, particularly such a young one to a pub.
Full of pissed people, germs and smells.
Are people so desperate to socialise they would expose their baby to that?

Maybe the parents didn't want people in their space, feel pressured to clean etc so taking the meet and greet outside to a location where everyone can sit and eat but more importantly they will LEAVE was the easier option.

The baby’s first day on earth and their parent thinks a rancid old pub is the first thing they will be introduced to?

It really is astonishing. Mindless. Setting the worst possible precedent and putting the parents wishes over the needs of a tiny newly delivered baby, even the thought of it really upsets me.

Edited

Who says it was a rancid old pub? Plenty of pubs are perfectly nice places serving good food. So much projecting.

Switcher · 10/04/2025 07:28

I did the same thing as we live next to the pub, and I was 40.

Coali · 10/04/2025 07:28

I went to the pub a few days after birth. Luckily, unlike some of the people here, we don’t go to smelly, dirty, loud, horrible pubs!

@SouthLondonMum22
Whilst that's true they'll have family members helping, a day old baby wont have an immune system. People will be wanting to hold the baby. I've never seen people wash their hands properly in public toilets and they'll be touching the dirty cups/utensils at the pub and then touching baby. There's thirdhand smoking as well. People will smoke outside but it will still linger on clothes, hair and skin. Read about it online.

People can do what they want with their babies. Unless necessary, I wouldn't take a day old baby out let alone to a pub.

Family members will be doing exactly the same things at home. It may even be worse. Do you think people who don’t wash their hands in a public toilet suddenly do it in private? Or that they don’t pop into the garden to smoke?

YANBU - it is great that she is doing so well after giving birth but the pub isn’t an environment for a newborn, their immune systems are very weak and hanging out anywhere crowded is not recommended.

Good for her, I hope she enjoyed showing off her beautiful new born and eating a good meal!

agree with a poster above though, after this high could come a low and so make sure she has a supportive network around her.

You're not old fashioned, you are judgmental. She wasn't drinking. She was having a meal.

I’m ok with being judgemental, if that was meant to sting. We all are.

x2boys · 10/04/2025 07:19

Meh my Dad and all of his siblings were born in the pub his parents owned
This poor girl is likely to get a lot of judgement due to her age no need to add to it.

We took baby out for a walk at two days old and stopped into the pub to get a drink (albeit diet cokes) on the way back - the pub had literally just opened though at 4pm so we were the only ones in there.

Bit different to the same day of birth!

greengreyblue · 10/04/2025 07:16

YANBU OP. Depends on the pub but a loud pub is no place for a brand new baby.

Livingbytheocean · 10/04/2025 07:16

Some people honestly have rock bottom standards. I do feel sorry for the babies and children growing up in an environment with parents totally disregarding their well being even from day one.

It is like they are unaware of the stress and shock the baby has been through, either that or they just don’t care. It’s a damning indictment of the me first generation, and/or dysfunctional parenting from the word go.

Newnamesameme · 10/04/2025 07:15

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 10/04/2025 07:00

Same here. I am old fashioned anyway, and don’t approve of taking kids to pubs except for a meal (especially when they are moving about on their own - it’s bloody boring for them). It’s not so much that she took the baby on day one, but rather is it going to be something that happens on day 2, day 3, day 4 and so on? The people posting that they popped into Tesco on the way home after sneezing out a child five minutes earlier are missing the point that this may (although may not, of course) indicate that this child is going to grow up rolling around on the sticky carpet in ‘Spoons like a pub dog instead of being carefully cosseted at home.

You're not old fashioned, you are judgmental. She wasn't drinking. She was having a meal.

christ

He was probably filled with germs all those wine and fish

TheIceBear · 10/04/2025 07:13

I don’t think there is anything wrong with it as long as no one smoking around the baby. I wouldn’t have been able to face that myself I was just too wrecked. I admire her energy.

BlondiePortz · 10/04/2025 07:12

Weirdwalk · 10/04/2025 07:12

It’s hardly putting the baby’s needs first is it.

How?

HelenWheels · 10/04/2025 07:12

Smallmercies · 10/04/2025 07:10

Beds are the germiest of places - a nice clean pub is much safer.
