Staying in €500pn hotel

Would rather be at home with my cats than in this wanky hotel with my DP. Hate these over-priced places. Just finished a 6 course meal with paired wines. €110 each. Couldn’t finish, we were too full.

Sat across from my partner basically sat in silence or some inane chat about whether he should ‘expand’ the suitcase for the way home. I’m F38, he’s M54. He’s obsessed with “treating himself” and “having the best”. We’ve been together 5 years. Both from working class families but now he’s on 400K salary just acts like an entitled prick. He can switch from normal down to earth guy to a wanker in short space of time.
We have been frosty for 24 hours after some ridiculous argument. Just want to go home!

@OohRains I had the Roman menu. I don’t feel I missed out, tasty as the beef sounds. We got given pasta to take home. It was an excellent find for the one fancy meal of our trip.

AprilBunny · 10/04/2025 08:48

My DH is a treat yourselfer’, I found I had to give permission to allow myself to enjoy luxurious experiences. Luckily I’m ok with it all now, I still like value for money and hate to ripped off but for example I don’t mind paying out for business class flights. If my DH does ever go a bit wankery I tell him to stop being a dick.
If this life isn’t for you then leave now, I’m sure you’ll both find people you are more suited to.

€95 for 4 courses, wine, bread and bottled water. I love tasting menus.

The Tuscan beef was 🔥 there! Pretty reasonable pricing structure for Rome too and they gave us a bottle of their olive oil to take home.

Then leave him. He is 16 years older than you and has different interests/tastes. I'm sure he'll find someone who will enjoy his life with him, as will you.

We stayed in a very posh hotel in London for a big birthday a few years ago. Apart from the view, I would have been just as happy in a Holiday Inn.

Yup,
You are in the hotel room for about an hour in the evening and an hour in the morning, approx.
The rest of the time you are asleep, or out for the evening, or at breakfast.
So really, paying over the top for the room is a waste of money.

KimberleyClark · 10/04/2025 08:13

Do you enjoy the lifestyle otherwise?

AprilBunny · 10/04/2025 08:10

Where is this place with the cheap tasting menu, I want to go?

PrincessOfPreschool · 10/04/2025 08:07

{mention:Stickortwigs}@Stickortwigs,she's only been with him 5 years. I doubt much has changed in that time. There's much I can read into the dynamic wry the age gap. Basically just sounds like she's lost interest so everything is annoying her.

ChopstickNovice · 10/04/2025 08:07

This isn't about the hotel !

Stickortwigs · 10/04/2025 07:53

Some really harsh responses. It sounds like OPs DH has changed as he’s earned more and she doesn’t like who he’s become.

And everyone declaring you absolutely can’t get a tasting menu with wine flight for that money - how could you possibly know? Sure it’s not standard but it’s in euros, that’s a lot of restaurants, it’s conceivable that one could be priced at that level.

€110 for a tasting menu with paired wines is an absolute bargain. Haven’t seen one that cheap in years. <completely misses the point>

Haha I was thinking the same thing😂

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 10/04/2025 07:43

Would you rather a flat-roofed pub?

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 10/04/2025 07:41

Sounds as if you need to go to the divorce solicitor on the way home

Pigeonqueen · 10/04/2025 07:33

So you’re with the wrong person, you clearly don’t love him and he’s too old for you… leave?

Bloody hell. You realise some people can bearly afford to eat?

OMGitsnotgood · 10/04/2025 07:18

A 6 course meal with paired wines for €110 is extremely reasonable, would love to know where that is (missing tbe point of tbe thread but am intrigued!)

Sounds to me like your relationship isn’t worth pursuing. Free him up so he can treat someone who appreciates it.

turkeyboots · 10/04/2025 07:17

The poor hotel and dinner are blameless. You need to break up and move on.

beAsensible1 · 10/04/2025 07:12

So he’s worked hard and likes to treat himself and you slag him off about it?

MissAndrey · 10/04/2025 07:08

Surely this is why you're with him though? I'm not sure why else you'd be in a relationship with someone so much older than you with such different values.

curious79 · 10/04/2025 07:04

You also sound a bit chippy and that you perhaps feel you don’t belong there with that mention of working class

curious79 · 10/04/2025 07:03

GoodOldTrayBake · 09/04/2025 23:23

Same… You simply can’t get a tasting menu at a 5 star hotel for that….

You can in fact, not with the wine flight though

These sorts of dinners leave you really stuffed in a horrid way. I’ve pit on horrendous amounts of weight doing these with my DH and have now started to massively push back and insist on simpler meals

is the issue that your partner is not really tuning into what you would like to do? How you like to / have previously lived?

he sounds very proud of his success but now wants to enjoy those fruits and you have a different idea of what that could look like

HellsBalls · 10/04/2025 06:01

Stealth bragging.

Tbrh · 10/04/2025 05:56

Sounds amazing. I think you need to look deep if something like this is making you miserable, life is too short.
