To ask how often you’re complimented on your looks

In particular by people you've just met. Have been out with a very pretty friend who has had men fawning over her/complimenting her whilst I was just ignored as usual. I don't think my physical appearance has ever been complimented by a stranger. Feeling a bit crap. Does this happen to other people?

I was recently telling a male friend about a man I really fancy but who has zero interest in me, and he said he was surprised as I'm an intelligent, good-looking woman and he imagined I'd be quite a catch. Forgive me for repeating it here but I'm overweight and in my 60s, the friend is late 40s and it's my first compliment in at least 20 years! Pity it wasn't from the man I fancied but for about 5 minutes I felt attractive again.

I hope someone surprises you with a lovely comment soon, OP. Flowers

When I was a dress size smaller - loads. Now a bit chunkier, rarely.

mrssunshinexxx · 09/04/2025 23:33

Every day by my husband. My best friend regularly says nice things too x

FishfingerFlinger · 09/04/2025 23:16

I think I can count on one hand the number of compliments from strangers I’ve ever had about my looks, including when being chatted up.

I get compliments on my style / clothes fairly often.

I like being complimented on what I am wearing but I don’t think I would like people regularly commenting on my looks. I don’t need other people passing judgement on what I look like, favourably or unfavourably.

PoppyBaxter · 09/04/2025 23:13

I'm trying to think of situations where this could even happen.

In my particular workplace it would be highly inappropriate and unprofessional to comment on anyone's looks or be flirtatious.

I am aware of men giving me a glance on the train or at the gym, but I'm married and they wouldn't approach me and say anything.

Beyond that, the men in my life are really just my husband's friends, who would never feel it appropriate to comment on my looks.

I don't do nights out in bars or anything these days, so I'm not meeting random drunk men who have the bravado to say anything.

Much less than when I was younger but in much nicer ways. In my teens and 20s it was several times a week and often felt creepy, in my 30s I was knackered, ill and rarely without a pram/small children so nada, and now in my 40s it’s the occasional nice comment from school mums, older women and DC’s friends - thankfully nothing from men aside from DH! I look much more confident and am sort of wizened now, so it puts the menfolk off 😁

I’m recovering from chemo and four major surgeries. When my friends meet me they tell me I’m looking great and my hair is amazing. The reality is my hair looks like a bird’s nest and I’m a shadow of my former self. While I’m glad they’re not telling me I look like shite it’s tough knowing they don’t mean what they’re telling me.

Cryingatthegym · 09/04/2025 22:49

Quite regularly, although a bit less now than when I was younger. I don't really see it myself, but it happens often enough that I accept it must be true.

desperatedaysareover · 09/04/2025 22:48

Formerly received unprovoked comments all the time, as well as being regularly pestered and leered at. Was nice when girls (usually drunk ones in club toilets) said I looked like random celebrities. Have now got the middle aged invisibility combo of belly, jowls and big old fuzzy dyed hair going on. And yet much more confident and happy to tootle about without a second thought about my appearance. Wish I could go back and have a word with myself!

Vannymcvan · 09/04/2025 22:41

Never when I was younger. Much more often in my 50s as I have very striking hair.

suah · 09/04/2025 22:39

Rarely by strangers except I recently got glasses and got a lot of compliments on them from coworkers, friends etc.

But DH tells me I’m beautiful multiple times a day and his opinion on this, other than mine, is the only one that matters!

Zinnialime · 09/04/2025 22:37

I get compliments on my hair quite often but only from people I know. I never have strangers approach me in Morrisons or wherever to tell me I'm pretty like some posters apparently experience. Honestly, I'd find that quite weird. The only times that has happened is on nights out or by annoying men at the beach.

babymamalove · 09/04/2025 22:37

Never really. Damn, I must be pretty plain. 🙃

sillyfrilly · 09/04/2025 22:35

Never, but I have friends that get compliments all the time when I’m with them. I always think life must be much better when you’re attractive

Carinattheliqorstore1 · 09/04/2025 22:32

never from strangers. That would be odd: according to my husband and 9 year old son, I’m the most beautify wife/mummy in the world.

my husband has me and our son as the photo on his phone, watch, laptop, phone cover, Alexa show and seems to get at least one photo gift for me every year because “he really likes that photo of me” and “you look lovely in it”

im in my 40s and fat and not particularly attractive.

Dramatic · 09/04/2025 22:29

I used to a lot when I was younger, thinner and prettier. Now I occasionally still get compliments on my eyes but that's about it.

Offtobuttonmoontovisitmrspoon · 09/04/2025 22:28

My style or figure is complimented more than my looks.

animalculous · 09/04/2025 22:26

Never. I'm naturally very plain. It keeps the men away though 😁

strugglinguphill · 09/04/2025 22:25

Never, probably because I’m fat and ugly

findingnibbles · 09/04/2025 22:25

NatWestPigFamily · 09/04/2025 20:43

When I was younger I used to get compliments. Now overweight with a menopausal belly so rarely get them now, if I do it’s about having nice eyes or skin.

Great user name!

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 09/04/2025 22:21

The guy who towed my car this morning told me I had beautiful eyes but he was pretty stoned at 9am

AliBaliBee1234 · 09/04/2025 22:10

Gymbunny2025 · 09/04/2025 21:59

Literally just a stranger approaching me and commenting in a positive way on my appearance. It does make me feel a bit uncomfortable, especially as I am not one of the beautiful people! Mostly people are just doing it to be nice I guess. I imagine truly beautiful people get it much less as they could look intimidating?

Oh no i'm sure you are! Reason I ask is i would never be brave enough to do that. I really should :)

DurbevillesGirl2 · 09/04/2025 22:10

A lot in my late teens and early twenties from strangers, but never from strangers after kids. I still get other mums complimenting me (pretty, beautiful, gorgeous, hot mumma, look so nice, midwife said I was glamorous) in the past 4 years early 30s. However, I’m a big complimenter too so perhaps just being nice and repaying the compliment as I mostly look rubbish. Lucky to have my hair washed and brushed 😅
I would probably feel really awful and jealous too if I went out with a friend and strangers kept complimenting her.

Whitesapphire · 09/04/2025 22:09

Several times a week, always nice to hear and much appreciated.

TunipTheVegimal24 · 09/04/2025 22:09

In my early 20s, it wasn't that uncommon - oh to be young and gorgeous again!!

Now mid-30s, 16 stone and basically haggard, the only people who still think I'm beautiful, are my 2 and 4 year olds, and my mum 😅Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder post-children (unless you really work at it, or are lucky!).
