To think you don’t get out of paying the bill because you don’t drink?

I’m sure this has been done many times before by people in similar scenarios.

I went out for a bit of lunch with two friend’s and one of them brought another friend along that I’ve never met but was nice enough.

However, when it came to the bill, she said ‘’Can we please calculate it all with the alcohol you’ve had separately paid for? Because I only had classical cokes’’

So, we did as she asked. Added up everything but removed the drinks. So 3 of us paid for our drinks in a split, and then did another split for the rest with her and her food and classical colas.

The annoying bit is, she had 3 of them. And they weren’t really much different in price to most of our alcohol.

We all had the same roast and mango cheesecake.

I wouldn’t mind but she kept insisting we all had a dessert so she didn’t feel alone in having one. We’re adults after all but it is a bit annoying

Separate thread to come to see if I would be U to tell my friend not to bring her along again

She also didn’t tip.

Yabu because alcohol is more expensive. 1 alcoholic drink = 3 cokes. She probably didn’t realise that the cokes added up but maybe she had been in situations where she’s split the bill and took on the cost of alcohol.

@HelloVeraPlant

you are wrong.

incandescentglow · 09/04/2025 21:23

classical cola had proper tickled me

If there’s not much difference in price with the cola and the alcoholic drinks then it seems a bit petty to not just split the bill 3 ways. But where I live alcohol is considerably more expensive than soft drinks and i wouldn’t want to sub someone else’s alcohol bill if I wasn’t drinking or not drinking as much.
Also if I don’t want dessert I couldn’t be persuaded to have one to keep someone else company. Super annoying when people ask that. Similarly if I want dessert & no one else does then as long as I’m not delaying anyone I’d eat dessert alone 😄.
as for tipping , if it’s evening / unsociable hours I think it’s nice to tip.
my issue is that people who work in retail are often on minimum wage & don’t get tipped … also this isn’t the USA where restaurant staff are paid so low vs uk?

But would you ask for alcohol to be paid separately but everyone to split the cost of your coke, which is what the OP is annoyed about?

Gowlett · 09/04/2025 21:22

The drinks should have been split into her Coke / your drinks.
And the food bill split four ways. Her Cokes ended up on that bill.

OurChristmasMiracle · 09/04/2025 21:22

She should have paid for her drinks, each of you pay for yours (or split the alcohol bill equally between the 3 of you) and then split the food 4 ways if you all had the same

Somersetlady · 09/04/2025 21:21

You say you are adults. Yet you were forced into purchasing a desert you didn’t want. That does not sound very adult.

What’s a classical cola?

Hits all the right notes

autisticbookworm · 09/04/2025 21:18

I wouldn’t have had issue but I would have added her cokes to her share. How did she drink so much coke though??

I have a friend who always drinks a lot and orders some thing expensive off the menu then suggests a bill split. The first time three of us met up, two of us were driving and our individual bills were £15 each and cf friends bill was £35. I said no we will pay for ourselves but cf and other friend made such an issue like I was tight fisted that I never did it again. We went out recently cf ordered something expensive so I did too. Her bill was £50 mine was £40 other friends was £30. So we all paid £40. Friend who had to pay extra looked pissed off but she’s been letting cf get away with it for years

Why is the OP being unreasonable - she's not saying the friend had no right to ask for alcohol to be paid for separately, just that if she was going to do that she should have paid for her own cokes.

amele · 09/04/2025 21:18

If ur splitting the bill why aren’t you just paying for what you had?? You split the bill wrong so it’s on you, you should’ve split the food and then she pays for her drinks on top of that and the rest of you split the alcohol.

my sister and I went out with a friend, when the waiter asked if we are ready to pay, the friend immediately said yes we'll split 3 ways, I was annoyed as it made no sense, and it meant my sis and I were paying more than what we had as friends order cost way more than ours. We were paying separately anyway so it would’ve made sense that we just pay for what we ate/drank.

Clementorangeade · 09/04/2025 21:09

Very likely that she (the friend) just worded it clumsily.

Why? Why is it that more likely to you than that she said ‘’Can we please calculate it all with the alcohol you’ve had separately paid for? Because I only had classical cokes’’ , and meant it? Because (possibly) she assumed wrongly that soft drinks are negligible in price compared to alcohol?

strawlight · 09/04/2025 21:12

ThatHardyWaspAgain · 09/04/2025 20:03

Our alcohol total was £12.50 and her cokes all came to £10.12

So it’s okay for us to sub her drinks just because they’re non alcohol?

I’d have said “there’s not a lot in it as you can see on the bill, but you can pay a couple of quid less”

Sunbeam01 · 09/04/2025 21:12

Gogogo12345 · 09/04/2025 20:43

It's very easy to do. Just ask for separate bills at the start

A lot of places say they cannot accommodate that or waiting staff look nervous (students etc) or waiting staff accommodate but then triple check everything so it all comes out together which is cumbersome and can be awkward.

The food still arrives at different times.

The bill arrives with questions and more triple checking.

There should be a very simple system whereby the kitchen receives it all as one order and you can just pay for your own meal and drinks at the end. No fuss.

Inertia · 09/04/2025 21:11

She should have paid for her own drinks. Cheeky to demand that everyone else pays for her soft drinks as well as the alcohol.

It's easy nowadays just to pay for your own food and drink. That's what me and my friends tend to do.

Same here - we have one CF in our group, so now we just pay for our own food/drinks

Clementorangeade · 09/04/2025 21:09

AthWat · 09/04/2025 21:07

Why on earth would you say that's what she was asking for when all we have is the OP explicitly saying that's not what she asked for. Is it because what happened was unreasonable and nobody should ask for it? Yes, that's the whole point.

The OP says she wanted the alcohol taken off and then the bill split, and that's what they did.

God, this is just like the girl math meme. She was clearly asking the group to just pay their own bills. Yes she worded it awkwardly but it wasn’t meant to be interpreted as do some wierd girl maths that results in you paying for my cokes.

When an adult doesn’t want to just pay a % of the full bill, they tend to say I didn’t have alcohol as the reason why. The response to that is to just have everyone pay for their own food and drink.

You've misunderstood, you're wrong, and you're cheap AF

She didn't, she isn't... now what insulting name would be appropriate for you?

Clementorangeade · 09/04/2025 21:05

MILLYmo0se · 09/04/2025 21:04

But she didn't pay for all for drinks, for some strange reason they split her drinks cost between the group for some odd reason - at least I think that's what they did?

Yes.
Don’t know why.
It doesn’t make any sense.

TheCurious0range · 09/04/2025 21:05

I just can't get past classical cokes 😂

fromthegecko · 09/04/2025 21:04

So she conned you, or you conned yourselves, into paying three quarters of her drinks bill, on top of your own drinks bill.

If you think she did it deliberately, don't go out with her again. She's a CF.

MILLYmo0se · 09/04/2025 21:04

Basketslipper · 09/04/2025 20:04

She has paid her share of food, plus her drinks, so what bill has she "got out of".

In our group, someone would have said "Sally wasn't drinking, we'll cover the alcohol" so she wouldn't have had to ask.

But she didn't pay for all for drinks, for some strange reason they split her drinks cost between the group for some odd reason - at least I think that's what they did?

Motherknowsrest · 09/04/2025 21:04

Yabu. Adults are quite capable of paying for what they've eaten and drank. It's not hard to add up a handful of items.

I used to hate it when people who drank or ate meat tried to get me to split the bill.
