Holiday anxiety - anyone else?

maldivemoment · 09/04/2025 16:17

We’ve never done a city break as a family but just booked Paris for next week. Myself, husband and x2 kids (10&13)

Completely irrational, I know, but anyone else suffer from ‘pre-holiday anxiety?’
Between now & next week I’ll be anxious about everything related to these few days away. 😭

Anyone else? Any tips?

@greengreyblue so kind and considerate of you to check in. Thank you.

Paris is simply awesome! We got the red eye this morning which meant we were up at 4.30! 😭
Walked for miles today so we’re all now burst! About to fall into bed.

Hoping for another lovely day tomorrow.

Brilliant! Hope it continues to be wonderful! You forget any mishaps and problems soon after return and just have the memories I find anyway. So each time I start to worry I remember that those problems were overcome and the trip was good regardless.

MermaidMummy06 · 14/04/2025 21:48

I never used to, but peri anxiety & travelling with DC mean I do now. Just got back from an abroad trip & I was a mess beforehand. I was ok once we left for the trip though. A few anxious moments, like making sure we catch the right train to the airport etc. but nothing major.

I used to just jump on a plane to anywhere in the world without a second thought & if anything went wrong wed just deal with it!

Passport, money, phone, keys & an adaptor plug & you're all good. You can buy anything else you forget there - you could also buy an adaptor but from personal experience I can say that trying to buy a 'home' to 'away' adaptor in the 'away' country can be annoyingly difficult.

Should anyone reading happen to forget their adaptor in Krakow, go to tourist info in the old town where they have a large cheap stock of them!

Agree with this. Once I've left the house I realise there's nothing more I can do so the holiday officially starts then! And even more so when the flight takes off (hopefully on time) and the drinks trolley is heading my way 🤣

MerelyPlaying · 09/04/2025 16:46

It’s normal. The thing I struggle with is leaving the house. I worry about it being empty, I clean like mad because someone is going to have to come in and feed the cats, and I have an irrational fear that I’ll never come home again. The holiday itself isn’t usually the worry.

I’m exactly like this. I stress about my elderly parents, the house, the dog, getting burgled. The kids being ill, delayed flights. I find it all bloody stressful TBH.

How’s it going op?

JMSA · 12/04/2025 07:21

It’s easy because you’re a couple.
I felt this way taking my 3 abroad on my first holiday as a single mum.

SiobhanSharpe · 12/04/2025 01:57

My pre holiday anxiety is limited to a week or so beforehand and it can be pretty overwhelming, to the extent that i have anxiety dreams about things going wrong.
Usually about leaving something or someone behind.
I have indeed left meds behind before, and once DH, who was loading the bags into the car, actually left a small but significant vanity type case of mine behind on the landing.
Didn't discover it until we arrived at our destination in northern France -- we were driving there so not unloading till we got there. It was my fault apparently, i didn't make it clear that i had three separate items to go into the car. But they were all together on the landing...

namechangeGOT · 10/04/2025 15:06

We go away abroad about 5 times a year. We’re currently in Orlando. We had 2 weeks at the park and a week on a cruise. We fly home tonight. Despite being experienced in airports, flying, hotels and all the rest I ALWAYS get pre-holiday anxiety. Something might go tits up etc. I’ve currently got ‘flight home’ anxiety that will shift as soon as our arses are in our seats. Then I’ll get ‘has all the luggage made it’ anxiety. Im a list maker but im also a worrier and I’ve come to learn im always going to be this way!

I don't know really, I think it's a combination of luckily having a great secure upbringing and just an innate not giving a fuck about anything much.

Basically don't worry about things you can't change and if you are upset about something then do something about it is my philosophy- if you can't do anything about it then fuck it 😃

Love this. I’m pretty much a cross that bridge when I come to it kind of person. No point worrying about things that you can’t change.

PersonalBest · 10/04/2025 14:34

Generally I don't get anxiety about holidays, but for some reason I get anxious leaving the house to head off. Not sure what I'm anxious about. Leaving my home unprotected maybe? It's gone by the time I get to the airport.

Danascully2 · 10/04/2025 14:31

I get anxious about going away. It's a combination of anxiety about leaving house empty (worse since a neighbour had an awful flood), managing all the stuff for the kids, worrying that kids will moan and husband will get grumpy because it's supposed to be a treat, plus all the general forgetting stuff, passports etc. it's getting a bit easier as they're getting older as we don't need so much stuff but on the other hand they moan more and have their own expectations etc so that is then an added pressure. It was also particularly tricky for a while as we had an elderly cat and that was a worry but he's no longer with us now so that is one less thing to think about.

Eyesopenwideawake · 10/04/2025 14:30

Horrible as it might feel, that it anxiety doing it’s job. It’s the emotion that’s triggered when there’s something that’s too important to ignore - like studying for an exam, getting ready for a first date or going on holiday. If you didn’t have some level of anxiety you would see the value in doing, well, anything.

Agree 100%

greengreyblue · 10/04/2025 14:04

OP the metro is easy to navigate. Walk along the Seine, lounge around on the grass sunder the Eiffel Tower, it’s worth goi g up to Sacre Coer. Also a walk through the Tuileries gardens is lovely for a break from the city. Lots of benches and chairs. We’ve got a baguette avec fromage from a bakery and sat there watching the world go by .Fantastique!

BashfulClam · 10/04/2025 14:00

I worry a lot in the run up as feel there is so much to remember. I’m going away in May so have booked my waxing and hair appointment. I taje soap and solid shampoo so I’m not carrying heavy bottle that can leak. A bar of soo takes up no space. I have a list on my phone and add to it when I remember sonerhing. Other than that once I get through security I don’t stress lot. What will be will be. Oh although I do say to the taxi driver before we depart give me two seconds to just check I have money, phone, passports etc…

Just to Conwy harbour which is a two hour drive fro us. I’m nervous!

Conwy's lovely. It's only about 2 hours from us too but it's a whole different world.

Windthebloodybobbinup · 10/04/2025 13:10

I suffer from this really badly! I think the key to it is the fact that you are taking the whole family, and if you are like me have a sense that you are now responsible for everyone’s good time. Imagine if this was a couples break, or you were on your own. No worrying about late flights meaning kids have to sit around for hours, finding food that everyone likes, managing everyone’s expectations, wrong shoes or clothes being packed. Instead, if the flight was delayed- great another drink at the bar! I can read more of my book!

@ZenNudist just cramming it all in & soaking up the Parisian vibes. No real itinerary, which is prob not ideal! 😬

Thank you for asking.

A hot chocolate from Angelina Paris will relax you @maldivemoment 😊

That sounds great.

I am the total opposite, I take everything incredibly seriously and get so wound up by pretty much everything. I wish I could just tune all that out (including DD always wandering about on holiday with a face like a slapped arse) and enjoy myself. I’m fine with places I’ve been to a lot, like where we go frequently in the West Country, but new places and planes are just awful.

I also hate that you have to book so much in advance instead of just deciding where you want to go on the day and rocking up.

I definitely need to learn how to live like this!

I’m the same OP, I don’t particularly enjoy going on holiday and tie myself up in knots before going away 😭

ANDisayWhatsGoingon · 10/04/2025 11:08

Only when flying, otherwise I'm just excited! I do have a check list to make sure we haven't forgotten anything important such as medication etc.

maldivemoment · 10/04/2025 11:08

@Shoxfordian can I please have you on speed dial?
